The gravestone for little Charles E Martin (20 Aug 1872-25 Jan 1873) was so grimy that it had been unreadable for decades. We cleaned it enough in 2019 to be able to read it, and last week we discovered that it was just stuck into the dirt, leaning over without its base. We excavated to find the base - it had sunk 10 inches underground! After setting and leveling the base, we mortared baby Charles' stone back upright so it will stand for many more years. He was the son of Charles N Martin and Veleria Simpson who lie next to their three babies.

Anyone with an ancestor or a child buried at Bowen Cemetery is a member of the Association. If you want to get the meeting notice and the link, please email [email protected] to get on the mailing list. If you know people who want to take part but can't connect by computer, we will send out the agenda and accept votes by mail and email.

During restoration last week, we found the base and lower part of Thomas Bowen's broken headstone underground between his brothers James Boyle Bowen (1827-1842) and Robert F Bowen (1809-1835). The stone broke fairly cleanly and straight so we were able to repair it with a specialized epoxy, and a historic preservation lime mortar made with the exact materials used 150-200 years ago. The first photo is from 2012 before the headstone was broken and the after photo is from August 8, 2020.

Baby Sarah E Bowen was born and died 177 years ago. Her beautiful little headstone has been on the ground for several years. The before photo is from October 2017. During restoration work this week we located the base underground near where her headstone lay. We raised and leveled the base, cleaned and stabilized it and reset the stone. The 'after' photo was taken at sunset on August 8th, 2020. Rest well, little one.

A nice article about Bowen Cemetery in the Cuba Review, October 6, 1938, pg 1. Fifty dollars a year to someone to keep it cleaned up - that was real money!

Today we honor the memory of Private Charles Ferdinand Davis, who lost his life serving his country in the Argonne Forest of France on October 14, 1918. The Red Bird native died at the age of 25. His body was repatriated in 1921 and he was buried by his family with military honors at Bowen Cemetery three years after his death.

Now that summer weather is here, weโ€™re asking for donations for the maintenance and repair fund for Bowen Cemetery. With interest rates at historic lows, it is tough to earn enough income to stay on top of expenses, so your support means a lot. We donโ€™t yet have a way to accept donations electronically, but you can make a check to โ€˜Bowen Cemetery Associationโ€™ and mail it to

We lost a source of potential donations when we had to cancel our April Cemetery Preservation Workshop, and itโ€™s still unclear if weโ€™ll be able to hold it on the August 1st reschedule date. Other ideas for in-person fundraising are on hold for a while.

THANK YOU for your support of our 190 year old community cemetery. The BCA board is committed to the long-term well-being of the resting place of so many of our ancestors and loved ones. If you arenโ€™t yet on the email list, send a note to [email protected] Anyone with an ancestor or child buried in the cemetery is a voting member of the Bowen Cemetery Association, and being on the email list is a great way to stay informed.

Celebrating the life of Alice May Houseman Sewell, who was born this week 151 years ago. She left her earthly home 76 years ago this week at the age of 75. She was born at Jake Prairie, and was married to James Alden Sewell at Red Bird in 1892. They were the parents of 14 children, including 3 from James's first wife. Several of their children and grandchildren are also buried in Bowen Cemetery. (Photo by Glenna, Find A Grave, 2012).
