Deaconess Eura Lewis was a trailblazer and an educator of many members of Mount Olive. Her vibrant spirit is missed on Sunday mornings.

Black History Month Spotlight

During Black History Month, we honor the individuals whose courage, leadership, and service have shaped our communities and strengthened our shared history. The Honorable Eura Lee Hudgins Lewis (1929–2022) stands among those trailblazers whose life left a lasting mark on Middleburg and Fauquier County.

Eura Lewis: A Life of Service

For decades, Mrs. Lewis devoted herself to the Middleburg community. She served as a schoolteacher in northern Fauquier County for forty years, beginning in one-room segregated schools and continuing through integration, shaping generations of students.

After retiring, she became the first African American woman elected to the Middleburg Town Council, serving for twelve years. She was also the driving force behind the creation of The Middleburg Museum Foundation and served as its Founder and President Emeritus.

A graduate of Saint Paul's College, Lewis dedicated her life to education, faith, and community leadership. Her lifelong motto, “Make a Difference,” defined a legacy that continues to inspire.
