There's a telescope called Swift that NASA has relied on for 20 years. When its orbit started to fail, a company scrambled to build a rescue satellite in just a couple of months to catch it before it fell.

Then the rescue satellite itself started tumbling in space. It couldn't point its antenna back to Earth, so NASA lost contact with it completely.

Last week, the whole mission was called off.

Some weeks feel like you're running the whole time. Errands, deadlines, one more thing added to the list before you even finish your coffee.

Before the offering was even collected yesterday, Rev. Mark Spildooren did something none of us expected on his last Sunday with us. He sang.

A few weeks ago he'd promised someone in our congregation that before his time with us was over, he'd sing "Angel Band" in worship, an old Appalachian folk hymn about carrying a longing heart home. So on his final Sunday, standing up front with no accompaniment, he kept that promise.

His sermon that morning, "Look! Another Miracle," pointed us to two of Scripture's quieter miracle stories, the widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings and the widow of Nain in Luke. His point was simple. The miracle in both stories starts with compassion. "And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her. That's the reason for the miracle," he said. Most of us won't raise the dead or make oil never run dry, but every one of us can show compassion, and that alone can be a kind of miracle.

Big news !!!

Millie is officially a certified Therapy Dog through a national Therapy Dog organization! She and her owner Larry Lelah are ready for worship and warm welcomes on Sunday. Millie has already put her new title to work, visiting a longtime member of our RRC family.

Yesterday, we welcomed someone home.

Rev. Mark Spildooren grew up in these pews. He went on to serve as a Navy Chaplain, work as a social worker in the New Jersey prison system, and pastor a church in Ringoes before retiring to Flemington. This morning, he stood back up in the pulpit where it all started for him, and it was every bit as sweet as you'd think.

Big house. Big income. Big car. Does that mean you're not needy?

That was the question at the center of this week's message from Matthew 25 — the parable of the sheep and the goats. Pastor Fretz didn't let us off easy, naming something we don't talk about much around here: this is one of the wealthiest corners of New Jersey, and it's easy to assume that means nobody's hurting.

But pain doesn't check a bank account first.

The call was simple in the end: find a need and fill it. Lift up those who are lonely, oppressed, or just quietly struggling behind a comfortable front.

It's also a good word for us right now as a congregation preparing to call our next pastor. Knowing what we're called to do matters just as much as knowing who's coming to lead us.
