St. Stephen the Martyr Set to Celebrate 50th Annual Polish Picnic
For the last 50 years, St. Stephen the Martyr Polish National Catholic Church, Reading, PA, has celebrated its Polish heritage with the community by hosting its Annual Polish Picnic.
The event has grown into what has been described as “one of the largest of its kind in the Berks County area,” and offers a full day of Polka music, pierogi, platzki, golumpki, Konopelski’s kielbasa and much more!
This year's picnic will once again be held at Konopelski's Willow Glen Park, 94 Park Ave. Sinking Spring, PA Saturday, August 8 from Noon until 6 pm.
According to Jay Rowe, Picnic Committee Chairperson, “The family-oriented Polish festival will feature a full menu of Polish foods made by members of the parish, plus a selection of traditional fare, as well.”
Regarding the menu, Rowe explained, “Our volunteers have been busy making three kinds of pierogi (potato, cheese and sauerkraut), platzki (potato pancakes), halushki, golumpki (filled cabbages), plus two kinds of soup, Rozol (Polish chicken soup) and Bigos (hunter's stew). Most items will be available to eat there (hot) or for take-out (cold).”
“Beverages will be available, including a limited quantity of Polish piwo. We are proud to announce that a special commemorative mug will be offered for purchase to mark the picnic's 50th anniversary,” he stated.
Live entertainment will be provided by the very popular Eddie Foreman Orchestra. In addition, a special tent for children's activities will be featured, as well as a bake sale and raffle drawing.
With plenty of parking, a large tent with picnic tables, and excellent facilities, the picnic will be held rain or shine. Donation for admission is $5 per person (under 16 years-free).
Also of note, St. Stephen's PNCC is preparing to celebrate its 100th Anniversary as a parish in January 2027. According to Tom Schalata, Parish Committee Chairperson, the congregation is planning a year-long celebration of that milestone in the coming year. A special Parish Heritage Museum is expected to be completed inside the church in time for the anniversary.
