La comunidad parroquial de la Iglesia Católica Romana de San José en Reading se reunió recientemente para celebrar con alegría el 80.º cumpleaños de monseñor John J. Grabish, un sacerdote cuya vida se ha distinguido por la fe, el servicio, la fraternidad y la dedicación a las personas confiadas a su cuidado pastoral.
La ocasión estuvo llena de sonrisas y buen humor, mientras se le recordaba a monseñor Grabish que “alguien ya tiene 80 años”. Aunque no tuvo que demostrar ningún paso de baile de Elvis Presley, la celebración pronto se centró en una de sus canciones favoritas: una emotiva interpretación de Andrew Angstadt del querido himno cristiano “How Great Thou Art” (“Cuán Grande Es Él”), popularizado por Elvis Presley.
Monseñor Grabish fue invitado a permanecer en su lugar y disfrutar del homenaje musical, mientras el cantante animaba a todos los presentes en San José a unirse durante el conocido coro. Lo que comenzó como una alegre sorpresa de cumpleaños se convirtió en una hermosa expresión de fe compartida.

Monseñor Grabish fue ordenado sacerdote en 1972. En junio de 2014, fue nombrado párroco de las parroquias de San José y San Pablo en Reading. Durante sus años de liderazgo, ha trabajado para fortalecer la vida parroquial, apoyar las obras de caridad y unir a los miembros de habla inglesa, hispanos y vietnamitas de la comunidad católica.

La elección de “Cuán Grande Es Él” hizo que la celebración fuera especialmente significativa. Mientras la congregación se unía al coro, el momento reflejó tanto el cariño personal de monseñor Grabish por el himno como la fe que ha guiado su larga vocación.

The parish community of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Reading recently came together for a joyful celebration honoring the 80th birthday of Monsignor John J. Grabish—a priest whose life has been defined by faith, service, fellowship, and devotion to the people entrusted to his care.
The occasion included plenty of smiles and good-natured humor as Monsignor Grabish was reminded that “somebody’s 80 years old.” Although he was spared from demonstrating any Elvis Presley dance moves, the celebration soon turned to one of his favorite songs: a moving performance by Andrew Angstadt of the beloved Christian hymn “How Great Thou Art,” famously recorded by Elvis Presley.
Monsignor Grabish was invited to remain where he was and enjoy the musical tribute as the singer encouraged everyone gathered at St. Joseph’s to join in during the familiar chorus. What began as a lighthearted birthday surprise became a beautiful expression of shared faith.
As voices filled the church, the hymn’s message of wonder, gratitude and praise seemed especially appropriate for the occasion. It was not simply a performance for Monsignor Grabish, but a moment shared with him—a congregation joining together to honor a priest who has spent more than five decades encouraging others to worship, serve and remain faithful.
Monsignor Grabish was ordained to the priesthood in 1972. In June 2014, he was appointed pastor of both St. Joseph Parish and St. Paul Parish in Reading. During his years of leadership, he has worked to strengthen parish life, support charitable outreach and bring together English-speaking, Latino and Vietnamese members of the Catholic community.
His ministry has extended far beyond Sunday Mass. Through food drives, educational programs, youth activities and community outreach, Monsignor Grabish has encouraged parishioners to place their faith into action. He has also worked to preserve the history of the Catholic Church in the Reading area, including documenting the story of the former SS. Peter and Paul Parish in his book Memories.
In March 2023, parishioners also honored Monsignor Grabish for the 50th anniversary of his ordination during the St. Paul Catholic Church One Family Gala. Approximately 235 people representing the parishes’ English, Latino and Vietnamese congregations attended that celebration—a reflection of his ability to unite people from different backgrounds through a common faith.
His 80th birthday offered another opportunity for the community to express its gratitude.
For many parishioners, Monsignor Grabish has been more than a pastor. He has been a teacher, historian, counselor, mentor and familiar spiritual presence during baptisms, weddings, funerals, feast days and countless ordinary Sundays. His influence can be measured not only in years of ministry, but also in the generations of families whose lives he has touched.
The choice of “How Great Thou Art” made the celebration particularly meaningful. As the congregation joined the chorus, the moment reflected both Monsignor Grabish’s personal love for the hymn and the faith that has guided his long vocation.
May this milestone year bring him the same joy, encouragement and sense of community that he has given to so many others throughout his remarkable life of faith and service.
