As we know from our venerable tradition, St. Felicity gave birth in prison while awaiting her ex*****on for the crime of being a Christian. She gave up her daughter to an adoptive Christian mother and then died for the faith two days later, on this date in 203 A.D. You can learn more about her here: https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06029a.htm #:~:text=Vibia%20Perpetua%2C%20a%20young%20married,the%20judge%2C%20was%20also%20incarcerated

In fifteen short years, Blessed Carlo Acutis gained great sanctity because he was on the "fast track." Through regular reception of Communion and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, he found the path to eternal life.

You can be on this fast track as well - learn more about us at https://stmaryrandolph.org

This month, the Holy Father is asking for us to pray for those who, right now, are persecuted for their faith. We pray especially for all bishops, priests, deacons, and religious, who are often the target of specific attacks in nations like Nigeria. Come quickly to their aid, Lord Jesus!

Did you catch the interesting aside at the end of today's Gospel? John points out that Jesus is fully human - that he has an intimate understanding of our wounded natures. It's a great thing to reflect upon this Lent - how Jesus knows us inside and out, every one of us at Saint Mary family! Hope you are enjoying the beauty of each day!!

If you attended Ash Wednesday Mass, it's likely that as you received the ashes on your forehead, you heard the words, "Repent, and believe in the Gospel." These are the same words we hear again in today's Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent.

We sometimes hear of the need for the Church to "read the signs of the times" - meaning, to acknowledge cultural realities going on today so we can adequately respond in a Christian way. This is very true! However, we also remember that the truest "sign of the times" is Jesus himself, who was incarnate, who suffered, and who died to invite us to repentance and a restored relationship with the Father. Do we have eyes to see that he is calling us today to repent?

On Fridays during Lent (our first is today!) Catholics abstain from eating meat. Here are three other ways you can set Fridays apart in this season of Lent:

1. Attend Stations of the Cross here at St.Mary, Randolph at 7 pm.

2. Create more time for silence and prayer in your schedule and meditate on the Passion.

3. Find some way to serve people experiencing poverty in your community.

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, it's important to listen to the stories and experiences from all corners of the Catholic Church.

Check out this excellent 2020 short film, "Black Faith Matters," from Spirit Juice, which details the life of a parish in New Orleans. https://youtu.be/XAmzyXxcKeg
