Music is a large part of what we do here at Sanctuary Christian Arts Center. Last week, we talked about Mahalia Jackson, a gospel singer who was a friend of Martin Luther King Jr. and encouraged him to give his “I Have a Dream” Speech at the March on Washington. This week, we’re learning about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a musician.

Tharpe was born on March 20, 1915, in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Raised by a singer and deaconess, Tharpe began her musical career in church, where she sang in the choir and played guitar. She and her mother would perform on the road with a musical troupe that allowed her to tour around the South singing songs. She began exploring other genres of music, like New Orleans jazz and Delta blues, during this time, which she would later incorporate into her own music.

Her first single, Rock Me, was a gospel and rock and roll fusion that establish her unique sound within the music industry, along with playing her own guitar, something unusual for women to do at the time. Her music touched on a variety of topics, from gender to war to segregation. Her style of blues music helped establish her as “the Godmother of Rock and Roll,” as she continued to break norms, gaining a fandom in America and Europe with her powerful ballads and jaunty tunes.

Tharpe influenced many other artists with her sound, including Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and one female artist who demanded “respect.” Who was this artist?
