Whatever you hear about this evening, know that the rally was peaceful with prayer and love. The rally moved over to the federal detention center led by clergy and remained peaceful. We sang songs and got on our knees and prayed. There was absolutely no need for military presence or engagement. There are sometimes a few bad actors as there are in any large gathering. But the hundreds of people I was with were peaceful and just wanted the police and military presence to leave and to know where this despicable administration has taken our families. People are rightfully angry and have every right to protest the criminal actions of this administration. Trump is a despicable liar. Do not believe anything he says about Los Angeles. The people I was with love their neighbors and are angry because their neighbors are being harmed.

Downtown today at a rally protesting, the ice actions and the detention of David Huerta. Afterward, we walked over to form a barrier between the police and protesters near the federal building.

It's Simchat Torah! Today ends the cycle of reading Torah and a new one begins with the book of Genesis. Perhaps you’ve never connected with Torah - and that’s more than fine! Many people are deeply Jewish and haven’t felt they need to go back to this sacred text. But if you are a secular/cultural Jew and feel Torah is only for the religious, think again!

For us, the Torah is not to be taken literally. It is a compendium of stories and laws that tell us about our earliest ancestors, their values and hopes. The Torah contains rich literature and metaphor, including powerful lessons about human behavior. The Torah is also filled with teachings that are completely absurd (but these can be fun to encounter too). Judaism has at its core a multi-millennia history of interpreting these texts. You are entitled to be part of that conversation.

If dancing with the Torah isn’t your thing, you can just do a kitchen dance party celebrating identity, the joy of Jews around the world, or any litertature or text that is important to you!
