August was a month of disaster relief, back-to-school celebrations, community support and neighbors coming together to care for one another across The Salvation Army Western Territory.

In the Northwest Division, Salvation Army teams continued supporting families affected by the Spokane-area fires, providing food, essential supplies, cleanup equipment and emotional and spiritual care as communities began the recovery process.

In the Alaska Division, the Fairbanks Corps brought volunteers, staff and community partners together for a Back-to-School Supply Giveaway, helping local children start the school year prepared.

In the Southern California Division, the San Diego Citadel Corps celebrated the new school year with backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, meals and music for local kids and families.

The Cascade Division’s Portland Metro Corps helped 54 children from local programs and shelters shop for school supplies, while the Intermountain Division’s Salt Lake City Corps hosted a Backpack Giveaway with generous community partners.

In the Golden State Division, the San Francisco Corps distributed 500 backpacks filled with school supplies during National Night Out in the Tenderloin.

Across the Del Oro Division, the Napa Valley Corps raised critical funds to support local individuals and families. In the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division, teams checked on seniors during the storm and offered care to those in their communities.

And across the Southwest Division, Corps helped students get ready for the school year through backpacks, supplies, clothing, shopping trips and Back-to-School celebrations.

August reminded us what can happen when communities come together. Thank you to every volunteer, donor, partner and team member who helped make a difference this month.

Everyone deserves a place where they feel welcomed, valued and like they belong.

In Yuma, Arizona, adults with disabilities found that sense of belonging through Bible Adventure Thursdays, a weekly gathering created to provide worship, music, friendship and community.

What began as a place to gather became something more: a welcoming space where people could build connections, grow in faith and be themselves.

Because of your generosity, more people can find friendship, faith and a place to belong. Thank you for helping create communities where everyone has a place.

What happens when a community faces a crisis?

People show up.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, neighbors sewed masks for health care workers facing shortages. After devastating wildfires, volunteers organized supply drives and helped families begin again. In communities across the country, people came together to offer a meal, a helping hand, a safe place to stay or simply a reminder that no one had to face a difficult moment alone.

The Salvation Army was there alongside generous supporters, volunteers and local partners, helping connect people with practical assistance and compassionate care.

Because strong communities aren’t built by one person. They’re built when neighbors choose to care for one another.

World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize the people who bring hope, help and compassion to those facing crisis and hardship. It’s also a reminder that humanitarian work isn’t limited to disaster zones or breaking news.

Every day, lives are changed through simple acts of kindness like serving a meal, providing a safe place to stay or simply listening to someone in need right here in our communities.

Because of your generosity, those moments are possible. Thank you for making compassion part of someone’s story, not just on World Humanitarian Day but throughout the year.

What did summer at camp look like?

It looked like poolside fun and unforgettable activities at Camp Arnold, where campers made memories during Teen, Adaptive and PeeWee week with the legendary Pirate King Joe.

It looked like the first week at Camp Daley & Gilmore, where campers experienced a week filled with fun, fellowship and opportunities to grow in faith.

At Camp Del Oro, campers celebrated National Donut Day and remembered the Donut Lassies who brought comfort and a taste of home to soldiers during World War I.

At Camp Gifford, music camp was nothing short of epic.

At Camp High Peak, two feet of unexpected May snow turned into snowmen, sledding and an unforgettable day for campers.

At Camp Kuratli, young women stepped into leadership as they learned to study Scripture, lead songs and skits and serve campers throughout the week.

At Camp Ponderosa Ranch, campers continued the adventure by making memories, building friendships and experiencing the joy of being together.

Different camps. Different adventures. Different stories. But one thing remained the same: our camps created spaces where young people had fun, grew in faith and knew they were loved.
