Text: Philippians 1:29-30

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: “IT'S A PRIVILEGE TO SUFFER FOR CHRIST. QUESTION? ARE YOU WILLING TO SUFFER FOR HIM?"

*Introduction: Finishing the 1st Chapter of the Book of Philippians. This Book has been quite insightful and challenging. Now today's question, "Are you Willing to Suffer for Christ?"

*YOU WILL SEE THE WORD SUFFER, SUFFERING, AND SUFFERED SEVERAL TIMES IN THIS MESSAGE TODAY.

*NO PAIN, NO GAIN & JOYOUS PAIN FOLLOWS (my brief testimony).

* Philippians 1:29-30, "For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of SUFFERING for Him. 30 We are in this struggle together. You have seen my struggle in the past, and you know that I am still in the midst of it."

*Translated in MSG: "There’s far more to this life than trusting in Christ. There’s also SUFFERING for him. And the SUFFERING is as much a GIFT as the TRUSING. You’re involved in the same kind of struggle you saw me go through, on which you are now getting an updated report in this letter."

*James 1:2, "Count it ALL JOY when you fall in to various trials & tribulations (tests, hardships), because the trying of your faith works patience, and let patience have her perfect work, lacking knowing."

*Acts 5:41 (NKJV): "So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to SUFFER SHAME for His name."

*(NLT) "The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to SUFFER DISGRACE for the name of Jesus." Note: Have you ever thought of persecution as a blessing, as something worth rejoicing about?

*Matthew 5:11-12 (NLT) “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way."

*I Peter 3:13-18 and I Peter 4:12-18 (NLT), 3:13-18: 13 Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you SUFFER for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. 15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. 17 Remember, it is better to SUFFER for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to SUFFER for doing wrong! 18 Christ SUFFERED for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He SUFFERED physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit."

*I Peter 4:12-16 now (NLT), " 12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his SUFFERING, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. 14 If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you. 15 If you SUFFER, however, it must not be for murder, stealing, making trouble, or prying into other people’s affairs. 16 But it is no shame to SUFFER for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by His Name!

* Philippians 3:10, “All I want is to know Christ and to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his SUFFERINGS and become like him in his death.

* INVITATION: ARE YOU READY TO SUFFER FOR CHRIST JESUS? ARE YOU READY TO GIVE UP YOUR WILL FOR HIS WILL FOR YOUR LIFE? ARE YOU READY TO LAY DOWN YOUR BURDENS AND CARES? IF YOU ARE, RAISE BOTH OF YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR TO HIM!

Message: “Living as Citizens of Heaven.”

I. Review: "Living Life to the Fullest" from Philippians 1:22-25.
1. SPIRITUALLY: Study the Word daily, Pray daily, Fellowship regularly, Witness consistently, Accountability partner.
2. PHYSICALLY: Exercise, Eat Healthy, Proper Rest.
3. MENTALLY: Healthy relations with Family & Friends, Social Activities, Vacations, Sightseeing, Reading (books/articles).

We are preparing to be Citizens of Heaven. Our goal to live our lives for Christ should be the greatest goal for all CHRISTIANS. My question, IS IT?

II. Philippians 1:25-26 (NLT) 25 Knowing this, I am convinced (persuade) that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith. 26 And when I come to you again, you will have even more reason to take pride in Christ Jesus because of what he is doing through me."

III. Philippians 1:27 (our main verse): " Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing (firm) together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News."

IV. Philippians 1:28, "Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies. This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed, but that you are going to be saved, even by God himself."

King David said in Psalms 23:4-5, "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies."
Joshua 1:9 says, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage (courageous); do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

V. In closing: Philippians 3:20 says, "But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior."

II Peter 3:13 says it like this, “But in keeping with his promise we are looking FORWARD to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”

VI. Invitation: Are you ready to start living your life as if your Citizenship is in Heaven, and not here on earth?

Message: “Are you Afraid to Die!”
I. I have a challenging question for all of us today as Christians, "Are we afraid to die? HERE ARE SOME ANSWERS:
NO...
YES...
I DON'T WANT TO SUFFER...
I AM AFRAID OF THE UNKNOWN...

There are 4 Key parts to this message and lesson today:
1. Story of a martyred.
2. Review of verse 18.
3. Understanding the Spirit of God.
4. The understanding of living and dying.

II. 1st Key point: The story of a martyred:
Perpetua, in full Vibia Perpetua, (born BC 182—died AD March 7, 203). Christian martyr. Perpetua her trial and imprisonment; her death in the arena. Both her martyrdom and its account have been highly revered by ancient and modern Christians.
Perpetua, the daughter of a prosperous provincial family.
Perpetua and four companions were arrested. In clear violation of the emperor’s edict, all five were people preparing for baptism.
Another Christian voluntarily joined the small group. The six were tried, refused to renounce their faith, and were condemned to death in the arena. Perpetua’s voluntary acceptance of death by the sword. Perpetua guided the sword to her OWN neck in death.

III. Second Key Point: The review of verse 18.
(AMP): “for I know [with confidence; we’ll assured; indeed know] that this will turn out for my deliverance and spiritual well-being, through your prayers and the [superabundant; bountiful supply] supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, the Messiah [which upholds me; for my preservation; for my Spiritual health and welfare for my own soul] for the saving work of the Gospel].”

IV. Third Key point: Understanding the Spirit of God. Vs 19: "For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.”
(CR) Romans 7:6, "But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit Pneuma (pnyoo-mah) breath, breeze, a current of air, wind, spirit. Pneuma is the part of a person capable of responding to God. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity, who draws us to Christ; convicts us of sin; enables us to accept Christ as our personal Savior; assures us of salvation; enables us to live the victorious life; teaches us to understand the Bible; pray according to God’s Will; and share Christ with others.
(CR) II Corinthians 1:11 says, "And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety." Note: Praying with "Boldness" “Boldness" means in the Greek = parrhesia (par-rhay-see-ah) = outspokenness; unreserved utterance, freedom of speech, with frankness, candor, cheerful courage, and the opposite of cowardice, timidity, or fear; here it denotes a divine enablement that comes to ordinary and unprofessional people exhibiting Spiritual power and authority.

V. The 4th Key point: The understanding of living and dying from Verse 21. Verse 21 says, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." (CR) I Cor 15:50-58. “Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.”
(CR) I John 3:2-3 says, "Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure."
If you’re not ready to die, then you’re not ready to live. Make certain of your eternal destiny; then you will be free to serve and live - devoting your life to what really counts, without fear of death. Ultimately you will be like Him.

VI. In closing I want to explain, there are 3 types of deaths:
1. Physical = separation of the Spirit and the body.
2. Separate from the Spirit and of God.
3. Eternal separation from God, Hell!

VII. Invitation: “For me to live is Christ; He is my source of joy, my reason to live; His life in me and to die is gain; for I will be with Him in eternity; the gain of the Glory of eternity. DO YOU WANT TO LIVE WITH CHRIST THROUGHOUT ETERNITY; YOU CAN TODAY, BY ACCEPTING CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR AND LORD. ROMANS 8:18 SAYS, "For I consider from the standpoint of faith that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us!"

Message:”Please be patient with me, God is not through with me yet!”
I. Introduction:
A. Series on the Book of Philippians.
B. Revealing His great mysterious of His Word.
C. Great anticipation as to what God is going to do in all of our lives from and through this Book of Philippians.
D. There are 3 main dimensions I'm going to share today in the Book of Philippians:
1. The Background of the Book.
2. The Purpose of the Book.
3. The Results (From verses 1 thru 6 in Chapter One).
E. In the 3 main dimensions, Background, Purpose and Results, you will see all 3 INTERWOVEN TOGETHER.
II. First Dimension: "the Background of the Book:" The Church at Philippi was the first church establish by the Apostle Paul in Europe. Cross Reference (CR): From Acts 16:12-40 records the founding of the Philippian Church. The Book of Philippians was written during his second missionary journey about AD 51 = “A.D.” does not mean “after death,” as many people suppose. Now “B.C.” stands for the English phrase “Before Christ,” but “A.D.” stands confusingly for a Latin phrase: ANNO DOMINI, “in the year of the Lord," the year Jesus was born.
*Now, The church at Philippi displayed a strong missionary zeal and was CONSISTENT in its support of the Apostle Paul’s ministry.
(CR) Philippians 4:15-16, "You yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you alone; 16 for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs."
*The Apostle Paul wrote this letter in his first Roman imprisonment about 61 AD.
*The Philippian church had sent a gift with Epaphroditus, one of their members, to be delivered to the Apostle Paul while in jail.
III. Second Dimension: "The Purpose of the Book:" The Apostle Paul wanted to thank the Philippians for the contributions and support of him.
*THE CONCEPT OF REJOICING OR JOY APPEARS 16 TIMES IN 4 CHAPTERS
IV. Third Dimension: "The Results" (from verses 1 thru 6 in Chapter One).
Vs 1. "Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons."
*I want us to see 4 points in this verse: 1. Bondservant = voluntary servants OR slaves to Christ; giving willingly; freely from the heart; never needs to be forced; laboring with joy...
*Denotative, the Word in Greek (OSTEON): strength; firmness; sometimes it denotes hard substances other than bones, like a stone or kernel of fruit.
*Connotatively, BONDSERVANT means to be or have solid "Fruits of the Spirit"
*Jesus Christ a Bondservant. (CR) “but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bondservant, and being made in the likeness of men.” (Philippians‬ ‭2:7‬)‬‬. ‭‭
* Christ Jesus = the Messiah; the Anointed One.
* The Saints = believers; the body of Christ; Sinners saved by Grace.
* Overseers and Deacons = An Overseers is also a Bishop; Pastor; Deacon.
Vs 2 "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."
*GRACE = undeserved favor; not earned nor deserved; (CR) Ephesians 2:8 & 9, "for by Grace you have been saved through faith; and that not yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast."
Peace = "a peace that surpasses understanding!"
Vs 3 "I thank my God in all my remembrance of you,"
*Paul gives thanks for all the saints at Philippi.
*V4 "always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all"
(CR): “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians‬ ‭4:6)‬ ‭
‭‭
*V5 "in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now."
*Participation = partnership. The Gospel = the good news regarding salvation.
IV. Closing with this thought: "Please be patient with me, God is not through with me YET!"
*from Vs 6 "For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
*Covering 4 underlined words and terms; and with the RESULTS they bring.
1. Confident = I am CONVINCED and CONFIDENT of this very thing.
"Began a good work"
*(CR) Ephesians 2:10 says, we are God’s workmanship for "good works."
*(CR) Matthew 5:14 says, "let your light so shine that men may see you “good work” and Glorify the Father in Heaven."
*(CR): Psalm 138:8, "The Lord will FULFILL (complete) his purpose for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever — do not abandon the works of your hands."
*The Lord will get GOOD WORK out of us.
V. Invitation: Two part invitation:
1. Have you been given a GOOD WORK by accepting Christ.
2. Are you doing the GOOD WORK He's given you???
