Something to reflect on: Joseph, Jesus' earthly father, was willing to have Jesus as his adopted son. He provided him with protection, met his physical needs, and raised him with love. The doctrine of adoption taught in the Epistles (letters recorded in the New Testament) reflect the idea of that adoption by all who accept Christ as true sons of the living God. Joseph did not use the qualifier of adopted or step-son, but always claimed Jesus as his son. God does the same...we are adopted as His children, but He declares us as full sons and joint heirs with Christ. Love in its purity knows no limits!

There are many times in Jesus’ life that He used humor in His illustrations. Here are a few illustrations of how important humor is in our life as we serve Jesus each day.

"Men will confess to treason, murder, arson, false teeth, or a wig. How many of them will own up to a lack of humor?"

"For health and the constant enjoyment of life, give me a keen and ever-present sense of humor; it is the next best thing to an abiding faith in providence."

"There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt. And how do you know laughter if there is no pain to compare it with?"

"Whence comes this idea that if what we are doing is fun, it can’t be Gods will? The God who made giraffes, a baby’sfingernails, a puppy’s tail, a crook necked squash, the bobwhites call, and a young girls giggle, has a sense of humor. Make no mistake about that."

May humor and laughter be a part of our daily life as we live for Jesus Christ and serve Him.

John 16:33 (NIV2011)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus warned the disciples that there would be trouble in life. Paul called them the storms of life. Jesus was not only speaking to the disciples but to us also.
I like this illustration.

Here are 5 facts about storms of life that we need to remember:
1. Storms are INEVITABLE (John 16:33).

2. Storms are UNPREDICTABLE. You don’t know what tomorrow will bring. (James 4:14).

3. Storms are IMPARTIAL. It rains on the unjust and not just the "just"! (Matthew 5:45).

4. Storms are TEMPORARY. Peter refers to a "season of suffering" (I Peter 1:6). I Corinthians 10:13 reminds us that God knows how much we can handle.

5. Storms are for BUILDING FAITH. James 1 tells us to "count it all joy” when storms come.

As we face the storms of life may we give thanks that the Holy Spirit helps us through those storms.

Acts 4:32-33 (NIV2011)
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.
33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all

This Sunday we will be looking at the church and our mission in the world.

The church is not:
* An ark for the saving of a select few.
* A ferryboat to take effortless passengers to the shores of heaven.
* A life insurance company, with no obligation on policy holders except the payment of a small annual premium.
* A social set, welcoming certain people and excluding others from its fellowship.
* A Sunday pleasure club for the providing of pleasant occupation on the day of rest.
The church is:
* A lifeboat for the rescue of sin-wrecked and perishing souls.
* A family, in which love and service are expected from each member to each member.
* An organized community, with constant activities and continual growth and development.
* A company of believers who have found the one way of life and obey the one Lord of life.
* A union of those who love for the benefit of those who suffer.
* A center of social worship, in which the spiritual life of each is helped by the spiritual life of his fellow.
* The representative -- the "body" -- of Jesus Christ on the earth, reflecting his spirit and controlled by his will.

As always I am looking forward to our time together in worship.

James 2:21-22 (NIV2011)
21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.

James uses the example of Abraham to give us an example of following directions. Abraham moved out in faith and followed God’s directions to the promised land. Here is a good example of following directions.

JUST FOLLOW DIRECTIONS
Robert Kupferschmid was an 81-year old man who had no flying experience. However, due to a tragic emergency, he was forced to fly an airplane. On June 17, 1998, he and his 52-year-old pilot friend, Wesley Sickle, were flying from Indianapolis to Muncie, Indiana. During the flight, the pilot slumped over and died at the controls. The Cessna 172 single-engine plane began to nose-dive and Kupferschmid grabbed the controls. He got on the radio and pleaded for help.
Nearby were two pilots who heard the call. Mount Comfort was the closest airport, and the two pilots gave Kupferschmid a steady stream of instructions of climbing, steering, and the scariest part: landing. The two experienced pilots circled the runway three times before this somewhat frantic and totally inexperienced pilot was ready to attempt the landing.
Emergency vehicles were called out and ready for what seemed like an approaching disaster. Witnesses said the plane's nose nudged the center line and bounced a few times before the tail hit the ground. The Cessna ended up in a patch of soggy grass next to the runway. Amazingly, Kupferschmid was not injured. He listened and followed those instructions as if his life depended on it--and it did.
When biblical faith is rightly understood and applied, it doesn't matter how many doubts we have. It doesn't even matter if we're convinced that all is lost. What does matter is whether we have enough faith (even the size of a mustard seed) to follow God's instructions. Those who do, get where they're supposed to go. Those who don't end up lost somewhere far from home.

God very clearly gives us His directions in His word. May we daily follow them.
