Another of the activities lined up for the Retreat is a nature walk where you can learn to identify what is edible, what to avoid and what has medicinal value in the native plants on the campgrounds here in Ramona. Sage and wild mustard etc. are just some of the plants you will learn about.

Here are a couple of clues to one of the plants you will learn about...

**Which plant did native Californians use to make a mild tea which was used to treat stomachache and other pains.? It was also used to wash infected cuts and sores.
**Its resemblance to European holly and abundance in Southern California's hills were the origin of the name Hollywood which became the world-famous film capital.
Can you guess the name of this California native??

So last night some of the retreat committee made it up to Wildwood and we saw an OWL flying through the trees. We wish we could describe the serenity and beauty we felt for just the 90 minute we were there but you'll see in 8 days. Can't wait to be there with you Friday night and Saturday! It'll be even better when we're all together there ... finding that stillness that's difficult to grasp.

The Stake Relief Society Retreat Committee would love to have each sister send a cherished "be still" moment. Even if you aren't able to attend, this will be a way for you to add to the retreat (anonymously, of course). Post them, message us here or email to [email protected]

As with our Sunday instruction, a little forethought always increases the learning as we marinate an idea and then come together to enjoy the plethora of unique perspectives and light. Additionally, that brilliant concept of record keeping through journaling allows us to not only pen our gratitude for that which Heavenly Father has provided but it opens our minds up again to learn more from Him.

Below, please find the concept and sample "be still" story for our firefly exchange (Spanish translation also included). Because Sheila would like to have the stories available in both languages and displayed at the retreat, please share at your earliest convenience. What? You have more than one!? She'll be delighted! : )

Fireflies emit a light from their abdomen that communicates a variety of things such as looking for prey, a suitable mate or as a warning to predators.

Regardless of the reasons why, that light whether steady or in a sequence of flashes, is used for communication and goes with them wherever they go.

The 'Firefly Exchange' idea was chosen as a way to communicate the 'light' of our personal stories in connection with the theme 'Be Still and Know that I am God' (Psalms 46:10).

'Being Still' is the process of learning that Heavenly Father has a plan for each one of us, if we will let go and submit our will to his, we will be blessed in far greater and personally miraculous ways, than what we had tried or hoped to make happen.

The 'Firefly Exchange' will be your personal stories that have happened in your life - healing, prayers being answered, protection etc. where you grew to 'Know that I am God' and that He is interested in the detail of your life.

We will be sharing these stories of our 'Light' just as the fireflies do, on Friday evening of the Relief Society Retreat, with each story being a point of light connecting each one of us together, in our testimonies of the gospel. The stories shared will be done without the names of the authors, in the hopes that you will take courage as you share the personal stories that are so close to your heart.

Thank you for allowing your light to be seen by sharing your stories!!

Here is a sample story:

My youngest grandson had consistent and sequential ear infections since the time of his birth. Antibiotics had limited and short-lived success and the ear infections stretched on for months at a time with maybe only 7-10 days in between infections. Doctors were reluctant to put tubes in his ears for such a young toddler.

Adding to this concern was the apparent developmental delays that were showing...his very limited tolerance to public places, being easily upset and impatient, low tolerance even to family members whom he didn't see as often and the ever-present attempts to break free of any kind of restraint.

Finally, the doctors agreed that if he could be infection free, they would proceed with the ear tube surgery.

The morning of the surgery arrived and there were many concerns: anesthesia side effects, his reaction to strangers, the restraint that would be needed to apply the anesthesia, his lack of sleep due to the 6 a.m. surgery schedule, his pain tolerance post surgery and how his developmental delays would all factor in to the proceedings, were weighing heavily upon my daughter.

I asked her if I could say a prayer before we went into the surgery. She agreed and I was grateful for being given the opportunity to share with my beautiful, inactive daughter this request for divine help.

I remember asking Heavenly Father to bring peace and comfort to his mother and to my grandson and acknowledging that He is aware of our individual circumstances and wants to help, if we will allow Him to.

The surgery was quickly completed and as we went to the recovery room we could hear him crying. As soon as he was picked up, he immediately stopped crying and wanted to snuggle close to his mother and father.

As the post-op care instruction was given, my 2 year old grandson was calm with not so much as even a whimper, though blood trickled from one of his ears!

The nurse remarked that most children would be thrashing about and crying.
The instructions being concluded and the personal belongings gathered up to leave, the nurse asked if she could accompany us to the garage.

Upon exiting the elevator, she expressed her amazement at the continued calm and quiet from my grandson. Feeling that this was the perfect opportunity for his non-member father who had gone ahead to do the papers & surgery check-in to hear the details, I explained to the nurse that we had said a prayer before leaving the parking garage and entering the hospital for the surgery. It was because of that prayer that my grandson was able to be as quiet and calm as he was.

I know that my daughter realized that given my grandson's lack of sleep, his pain and the normal reactive behavior to unknown people and environments, the surgery could have been such a bad experience. 'Be Still and Know that I am God' was gratefully and miraculously experienced that day!
