Historic Tate Cemetery

A huge thanks to Michael Kirk for his continued maintenance of the Historic Tate Cemetery. I also want to thank him for placing the headstones on the graves of Mary Ola Campbell-Kirk, Levi Kirk and Freddie Kirk that I purchased.

This page for the Historic Tate Cemetery. The cemetery began a when James Tate and his family buried the people they enslaved there. Some of the last names of the families buried in Tate are Barnhill, Baxter, Campbell, Kirk, Luster, Phillips, Ramer and Strickland. The last person was buried there in the 1970s. After that, the condition of the cemetery deteriorated. Michael Kirk has done extensive clean up of the cemetery over the last few years and has made it safe to access again. We would like to hear from families that have ancestors buried at Tate so that we can possibly locate and mark graves. We would also like to establish a cemetery committee that would be responsible for the maintenance of Tate.
