Founded in 1869, Historic Oakwood Cemetery is located a short walking distance from the North Carolina State Capitol and the magnificent Governor's Mansion. The cemetery is the eastern boundary of the Oakwood National Historic District which contains one of the largest collections of Victorian-era homes in the country. Historic Oakwood Cemetery contains a special area within its 72 acres, the Conf

ederate Cemetery, located on the original two and one-half acres given for that purpose by Henry Mordecai in 1867. Adjoined with the Confederate Cemetery is the impressive House of Memory. Erected in 1935 its bronze memorial plaques recognize the many North Carolina service men and women who have served our country in times of conflict.
