We can't see anyone's soul directly, but we see what they do (and they see what we do!). A life well-lived is treated as evidence of a well-tended inner life, not a substitute for it. Rev. Rev. Amy's sermon explores Matthew 16:13–20, in which Jesus asks his disciples "Who do you say that I am?" Peter answers, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." In Jesus' time, expectations of a Messiah varied widely; there wasn't one agreed-upon job description, just a shared hope that God would set an unjust world right. How do we say, or rather show, who Jesus is in our community, at this point in time? By what actions do we live out our faith?

If this story in Rev. Amy's sermon feels strange or uncomfortable, that's the point; it was meant to unsettle its original audience, too. Amy explores the scripture's message: faith isn't about having the "right" pedigree, saying the perfect prayer, or even never doubting. It's about persistently, honestly bringing your needs to God (even shouting them out!) trusting that God is listening. Great faith isn't a magic key that guarantees the answer you want; it's staying in relationship with God through the asking, even when the answer seems delayed or unclear.

Rev. Amy's August 9th message was entitled, "Faith and Doubt." She clarified that doubt isn't a failure of faith - even Peter, standing right in front of Jesus, doubted. What matters is that when you're scared or sinking, crying out to God isn't a last resort; it's the whole point! And God responds immediately, every time. Thanks be to God!

Central to Rev. Amy's August 2nd message is compassion. We learned the Greek word for compassion is splagchnizomai. It's that gut-level, compassionate response that moves Jesus to heal the crowd even before the miraculous feeding with only 5 loaves and 2 fish occurs. The crowd showed up for Jesus - perhaps out of all kinds of needs - and Jesus, in turn, responded to them and for them. What could our community be like if we showed up with splagchnizomai for others, even in small ways?!

Rev. Amy's sermon focuses on five parables from Matthew 13:31-52 — the mustard seed, yeast, hidden treasure, pearl of great value, and the net — exploring how each parable reveals hidden things that only become visible with time, whether it's a seed growing into a tree or bread rising through fermentation. Each parable combines human action with divine action, suggesting that God works through, not instead of, our participation. Amy closes her sermon with an image of a chick wandering out of its pen and repeatedly running right back. It's akin to the Christian life: we may stray, but the call is to keep returning to God!

We are not called to be the judge of other people's hearts or faith - that responsibility belongs to God. Instead of quickly labeling others as good or bad, Rev. Amy suggests we try approaching people with curiosity, looking for how they reflect God's image. Remember that our own lives are a mix of both wheat and weeds .. and we're still a work in progress, thanks to God's message and his grace!

Guest preacher Rev. Jim Rand urges us toward two "roots of faith": awe at the miracle of growth itself (a hundredfold return beyond any farmer's dream), and action that flows from that awe. He warned against letting doctrine, division, or fear of hard topics choke out the church's sense of wonder and unity. Using the image of stubborn Bradford pear roots that keep sending up new shoots years after being cut down, he closed by calling the church to be similarly (and joyfully!) tenacious by scattering seeds of hope and invitation without worrying where they land.

Faith isn't about earning approval by getting all the rules or your "performance" right — it's about accepting an invitation. Jesus says "come to me, all who are weary," not "come to me once you've proven yourself." Rev. Amy explains that the "weariness" Jesus addresses isn't everyday tiredness but the deeper exhaustion of confronting injustice, poverty, and systemic wrongs. Following Jesus isn't a burden of strict obligation but a partnership, learning by walking alongside him, guided by the Holy Spirit. And your faith will show in small, concrete acts of mercy toward people who are struggling. If you are new to faith, this can be a relief: you don't have to have it all figured out, you just have to show up and start!
