The Beheading of St John the Forerunner is commemorated by the Church today, on August 29. It is a strict fast day because of the grief of Christians at the violent death of the saint. The glorious Prophet and Forerunner John the Baptist was an ascetic and great prophet who baptized Christ and became one of the most revered saints in the Orthodox Church. St John is a cousin of Christ through his mother Elizabeth. He was later beheaded by Herod in the first century to satisfy the request of Herod's stepdaughter and wife. Because St John baptized Christ, he is the patron saint of godparents.

His Eminence Archbishop Alexander’s retirement from the Diocese of the South took effect this week on July 23, 2026.
The Holy Synod expresses its profound gratitude to Archbishop Alexander (as do we here at Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church) for his years of devoted service to the Diocese of the South and to the Orthodox Church in America. The hierarchs assure His Eminence of their continued prayers as he is relieved of his responsibilities in the Diocese of the South while continuing his archpastoral ministry in the Bulgarian Diocese.
This photo of him was taken at one of his last visits to our church.

Important Reminder!
Stick around for a special Coffee Hour this Sunday as we say farewell to Rdr Troy Simeon, Kelsey, and Isaac as they prepare to head to St Vladimir’s Seminary. They will be around until August 3rd, so if you’re unable to be at church this Sunday the 19th, you have a few more opportunities to wish them well!
Also, if you can help prep the coffee hour (food will be purchased), please let Mka Tracy know.

This picture was taken when the Sitka Icon arrived here at our first church in Raleigh in 2005. We were honored to have it with us on Oct 25 and 26, 2005 while it was on a pilgrimage to 60 Orthodox Christian parishes across the United States.
