Matthew does not show us a perfect church above the rest of the world.

Instead, he reminds us of the ongoing invitation to disciple ourselves
under the Lordship of Jesus instead of under the lordship of the powers
which happen currently to claim all authority on Heaven and Earth in our small part of the world. i

And he issues the perpetual question:

“Who is your Lord?”

Pentecost is not as much about what God has done for us as what God wants us to do in the world,
which isn’t nearly as attractive to most of us.

So He gives us a gift.

We know the story that tells of love which sets people free.

We are witnesses of the love that did not bend to the social, political, and religious pressures of those in power.

We are witnesses of the love which was tortured and beaten, strung up and crucified, taken away and buried and now risen!

We are witnesses of a story that tells itself again in every generation, wherever life is crushed and broken and swept aside.

We are witnesses of that vision.

Have a wonderful week!

To be accepted for who we are in the eyes of another is indeed a miracle.

To belong because another makes that conscious decision to accept us in spite of what we have done is powerful.

We all need to feel accepted in order to have a stable identity and sense of self.

It has been God’s way to try to talk with us from the very beginning.

Genesis tells us that after creating man and woman, God enjoyed walking and talking with us in the garden.

That is until the day that man and woman sinned and when they heard God walking in the garden, we are told they hid from him.

And these were God’s words, “Where are you?”

In the end, it’s not Thomas’s “doubting” or demanding that matters; it’s his believing.

Everybody doubts, not everyone believes.

Be a believing Thomas; push as hard as you need to until you are awestruck and moved to proclaim with him:

“My Lord and my God!”

Every time we think we have hold of Jesus, he won’t stay long because he has places he wants to take us, people he wants us to meet.

Jesus is free of the grave and roaming at large in the world now.
He will not be confined again.

But he’s not just on the loose from us, avoiding intimacy, a God afraid of commitment.

He is on the loose in order to loose us from every grave we find ourselves in.

Have a wonderful week!

Suffering doesn’t market well.

As one preacher put it, “We don’t like a hung-up-to-die Jesus. That’s not our idea of God.

We want a strong, powerful God, an omnipotent God who is in control, a God of majesty and glory.”

Have a wonderful week!

Jesus sits by the deepest well.

He places himself at our side in the most monumental tasks and the most hopeless situations.

He is, throughout the Gospel of John, the living water, the bread of life, the light of the world, the Good Shepherd, the resurrection and the life.

And he is right next to us, in the heat of the day and at the height of our fatigue.

Have a wonderful week!
