On April 30th, Rev. Carrie and 7 other folks from UUFR joined 40+ other ONE Wake members to demand that the Cary Town Council show its support for more Affordable Housing in Cary. During this council meeting, all six council members present voted to commit 25% more money ($750K) than was originally allocated towards Affordable Housing initiatives. Seeing the presence of ONE Wake members in the audience, four of the city council members mentioned that ONE Wake organizing made a difference in how they voted. This is a big victory for ONE Wake, and is just one example of how community organizing can make a big difference in our communities.

Sunday, May 3, at 9:30 and 11:15 a.m., “A Blessing of the Animals” with Rev. Dr. James Kubal-Komoto

Bring your dogs, cats, bunnies, naked mole rates, goats, snakes, lizards, and other critters. All animals must be leashed or otherwise constrained or contained. If your animal doesn’t play well with others, bring a picture of your animal instead. We encourage you to print out a picture rather than bringing a picture on your phone. You may also bring a picture for our “Ritual of Remembrance” when we will remember animals we have loved and lost.

Our 11:15 a.m. service will be streamed on YouTube as well as being offered in person. To watch the service on YouTube, live or later, visit our website.

We will not have a sharing of joys and sorrows this Sunday, but to have a joy or sorrow shared on Sunday, May 10, fill out the Joy and Sorrow form on our website by 11 p.m. Saturday, May 9.

In April 2025, John Cato came to UUFR and heard Rev. Carrie's Earth Day sermon about trees. This inspired him to start the Raleigh Rotary America 250 Oak City Tree Campaign. As a result, over 250 oak trees are being planted across Raleigh to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary. This past Monday, April 27th, one of the oak trees was dedicated and will now spend the next 250 years of its life as part of the native plant garden in front of the North Carolina Governor's Mansion. Rev. Carrie was honored to deliver the invocation for this event. Rev. Carrie and John Cates are pictured next to the newly dedicated tree.

Sunday, April 26th, at 9:30 and 11:15 a.m., "Weaving Connections" with Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Stevens, Ministerial Candidate
In a world where the real news is so absurd as to seem fake, and where AI creates fake news so convincing it seems real, how can we figure out what’s true? Turning toward each other, toward real, three dimensional relationships, becomes the key to our survival as a species. Can we weave a network of connections that will grow and sustain the future we are hungry for? Join our candidate for the Lead Minister position, The Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Stevens, as she invites us to reflect on weaving connections.

On April 7, 2026 our Board unanimously approved the MAID resolution. Our next step is to reach out to other NC congregations to see if they may be willing to support this initiative for the right to determine how we die. Once 7 other congregations adopt the MAID resolution, we want to ask the UUA for their support.

If you are willing to help support MAID we invite you to attend a meeting at UUFR on Tuesday, April 21 at 1 pm in Founders Hall. If you would like to be a member of this team but cannot attend this meeting, please contact Jane Hunt at (919) 851-6676 or [email protected]. During this initial meeting we will draft a strategy for reaching out to our sister congregations. Our goal is to have our resolution passed by seven other churches by the end of 2026

Sunday, April 19th, at 9:30 and 11:15 a.m., “Theology of Call” with Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Stevens, Ministerial Candidate

Throughout our lives, we grow and change, hoping to become better. Culture teaches us to push ourselves, creating plans and executing them with discipline. The only problem is that sometimes, we fall into the trap of “should-ing” all over ourselves, eroding our self-compassion. What if there is another way? What if there’s something that calls forth from us an effortless, gentle unfolding? Join our candidate for the Lead Minister position, The Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Stevens, as she invites us to reflect on the theology of call.
