A Blessed Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday !

05/24/2026

On the Solemnity of Pentecost, celebrated this Sunday, Catholics have the opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence, either for themselves or for a soul in Purgatory.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that Purgatory is a "final purification" that must be undergone to reach heaven by all those "who die in God's grace and friendship" but are "still imperfectly purified, although they are assured of their eternal salvation."

The Catholic Encyclopedia explains that "by a plenary indulgence is meant the remission of the entire temporal punishment due to sin, so that no further expiation is required in Purgatory."

The souls in Purgatory wait to enjoy the presence of God in Heaven. To assist them in this process of purification, a Catholic can take the following steps:

1️⃣ Have the firm intention of not sinning again, even venially.

2️⃣ Sacramentally confess all sins.

3️⃣ Receive the Eucharist.

4️⃣ Pray for the Pope's intentions.

5️⃣ Pray or sing the hymn Veni Creator Spiritus during the Solemnity of Pentecost.

Pentecost is one of the most powerful feast days in Christianity because it celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the birth of the Church. Pentecost is not just about remembering an event from the past, it is also a day for Catholics to ask the Holy Spirit to renew their own hearts today.

So what should Catholics pray for on Pentecost Sunday?

First, Catholics should pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
The Bible says: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful” (traditional Pentecost prayer inspired by Acts 2).

Pentecost reminds believers that Christianity cannot truly be lived by human strength alone.

Second, Catholics should pray for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit:
wisdom,
understanding,
counsel,
fortitude,
knowledge,
piety,
and fear of the Lord.

These gifts help believers live holy and faithful lives.

Third, Pentecost is a powerful day to pray for courage. Before Pentecost, the apostles were afraid and hidden. After receiving the Holy Spirit, they became fearless witnesses of Jesus Christ.
Catholics can pray for courage to:
defend the faith,
speak truth,
resist temptation,
and remain faithful during difficulties.

Fourth, Catholics should pray for spiritual renewal and purification.
The Holy Spirit came as fire at Pentecost, symbolizing purification and transformation.
The Bible says: “Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire” (Acts 2:3).

Pentecost is a good time to ask God to:
remove spiritual laziness,
heal sinful habits,
and renew love for prayer.

Fifth, Catholics should pray for unity within:
families,
the Church,
communities,
and the world.
Pentecost united people from many nations and languages through the Gospel.

The Holy Spirit brings unity, not division.

Sixth, Pentecost is also a beautiful day to pray for the Church itself:
for the Pope,
bishops,
priests,
religious,
missionaries,
and all Christians throughout the world.
Catholics can pray that the Church may remain faithful and guided by the Holy Spirit.

Seventh, Catholics should pray for deeper love of Scripture and holiness. The Holy Spirit helps believers understand and live God’s Word.
The Bible says: “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit... will teach you everything” (John 14:26).

Eighth, Pentecost is also a good time to pray for discernment. Many people today struggle with confusion, fear, and uncertainty.
The Holy Spirit gives wisdom and guidance for important decisions and spiritual growth.

Ninth, Catholics can pray for the fruits of the Holy Spirit to grow within them:
love,
joy,
peace,
patience,
kindness,
generosity,
faithfulness,
gentleness,
and self-control.
These fruits show the presence of the Spirit in daily life.

Finally, Pentecost should remind Catholics to pray not only for personal blessings, but also to become instruments of God’s light in the world.

The apostles did not receive the Holy Spirit only for themselves, they received power to evangelize and transform the world.

In simple words, Catholics should pray on Pentecost Sunday for the Holy Spirit to renew their hearts with wisdom, courage, holiness, unity, and spiritual strength so they can live faithfully and become true witnesses of Christ.

Now you know.
