Rosh Hashanah — The Jewish New Year Holiday
Begins — sunset, Friday, September 15th, 2023
Ends — nightfall, Sunday, September 17th, 2023

Rosh Hashanah means ‘head of the year’. No work is permitted throughout this festival. It’s probably best not to get children to participate in this practice around this time. You could always let them off their weekend home learning tasks: up to you. Rosh Hashanah is first of the High Holidays and is the Jewish New Year. It celebrates the creation of Adam and Eve. The shofar (ram’s horn) is blown on both mornings of the holiday (except on Shabbat), and special foods are enjoyed.

Yom Kippur — A Jewish Holiday Exploring Forgiveness

Begins — sunset, Sunday, September 24, 2023
Ends — nightfall, Monday, September 25, 2023

The peak of the High Holidays and the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, no work is permitted during Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). It is the time that Jewish people pray and seek forgiveness. Over this period, people will fast. They avoid lotions and creams and do not wash. Instead, they will spend time in the synagogue, praying for forgiveness.

Sukkot — A Festival of Thanksgiving

Begins — sunset, Friday, September 29th, 2023
Ends — nightfall, Friday, October 6th, 2023

The seven days of Sukkot — celebrated by dwelling in the Sukkah (covered hut) — remember God's sheltering the Jewish ancestors as they traveled from Egypt to the Promised Land. It is a time of joy and happiness.

Forgiveness, Food and New Beginnings. These are universal themes. They are perfect for the start of a new year. Having a gathering at Jewish festivals and holidays this September is too good an opportunity to miss. So why not promote some good old cultural capital and immerse your learners in the practices, foods, beliefs and traditions of the faithful this September?
