An exorcist and his team spent three years watching who gets attacked and who does not. The pattern they found is so small it sounds like a joke, and it is the reason this post is worth your next two minutes.
Fr. Chad Ripperger does not work alone. There are lay assistants at every session, and between them they have seen enough cases to notice things. And noticing is the job:
"THIS IS WHAT WE WATCH FOR, PATTERNS, BECAUSE DEMONS ACT IN A VERY CONSISTENT WAY"
About three years ago one of his assistants spotted something in the people who were being hit. Not the possessed. The ordinary ones, the people suffering oppression, obsession, or just relentless temptation. They had one thing in common:
"THERE'S SOME AREA OF THEIR INTERIOR LIFE THAT IS UNDISCIPLINED"
Now brace yourself for the examples, because you are expecting something serious and he does not give you one:
"THEY EAT TOO MUCH"
"WHEN IT COMES TO CHOCOLATE, THEY'RE A LITTLE TOO INDULGENT"
Chocolate. That is the example an exorcist reaches for. And before anybody feels accused of something ridiculous, he says the thing that makes the whole idea work:
"NOT THAT THOSE THINGS ARE BAD. IT'S QUITE THE CONTRARY, THEY'RE GOOD, BUT THEY HAVE TO BE MODERATED"
The chocolate is not the problem. The chocolate is the door handle. It is not that you like it, it is that in that one small area nobody is steering, and something learned that about you.
He gives the other version too, the one more people will recognise:
"THE PERSON JUST DOESN'T MODERATE THEIR IRRITATION OR ANGER"
And the one nobody wants written down:
"SOMETIMES IT'S JUST THEY'RE NOT PRAYING"
So think about what that means when you turn it around. If there is a pattern in who gets hit, then the question stops being why me, and becomes a much better question with an answer attached.
Here is how he says it, and it is almost brisk:
"IF PEOPLE ARE GETTING ATTACKED YOU HAVE TO START FIGURING OUT, OKAY, WHERE ARE YOU UNDISCIPLINED. GET THAT CLEANED UP AND IT'LL SOLVE"
Not become a saint. Not fix everything. Find the one area where nothing is steering, and put a hand back on it.
You already know what yours is. You knew before you finished reading this. It is the thing you would be slightly embarrassed to write in a comment. The fridge at eleven at night. The phone in bed. The tone you take with one particular person. The prayer you have not said since March.
So take that one, and only that one, and put a rule on it today. Small enough that you will actually keep it.
"Lord, You know the one. I am not going to argue about it any more. Take back the part of me that nothing is steering, and start with today. Amen."
👇 One word if you know exactly which area is yours: MINE. And send this to somebody who keeps asking why everything lands on them, because an exorcist spent three years finding out and the answer is smaller than they think.
