We Must Stand Firm In The Face of Temptation. Philippians 1:8-11

The introduction of Paul's letter to the Philippians echoes many of the same sentiments as in his letter to the Ephesians. He is praying for them to stay firm in their beliefs and to grow in knowledge and love so that they will be filled with the fruits of righteousness when they die. We come to know and believe in Jesus and we need to grow in that knowledge. We are so much more fortunate than the Philippians or the Ephesians, the Galatians or the Corinthians or anyone else who lived in those early days of Christianity. We have the Gospels and we have the letters. Even though the Gospels were written in the first century, most people didn't read and so didn't have access to them. The letters were sent by messenger to the various communities and were read to those who were present. The Gospel stories were told by those who had known Jesus during his life and had witnessed his miracles and his resurrection. We can come to know Jesus from reading all of the Gospels, reflecting on them and asking God to help us understand how we can use the messages they contain in our daily lives. We also have the letters from Paul and the other disciples which help us understand what was going on in the early days of the church and which traditions were important to them. We also have the Old Testament to learn from and that gives us the background so that we can better understand Jesus' teachings as they refer back to the Torah and the promises given to the Israelites. We have a better look at the whole picture because we can read the Scriptures from beginning to end. We have no excuse for not getting to know Jesus better and grow in our knowledge and love.

Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. 1 Chronicles 16:8

Send one short message of thanks today to someone whose help you have taken for granted. Name the actual kindness: the ride, the listening, the meal, or the patience. If you speak of God's care, do so without adding details you cannot know. A truthful acknowledgment can make His goodness known more clearly than an inflated testimony. Then bring the same gratitude directly to Him in prayer. Today's verse brings thanksgiving, asking, and witness together in a way an ordinary day can hold.

Lord, thank You for kindness that has reached me through others. Help me notice it and give credit freely. Let my words be truthful, specific, and generous, and keep me from turning gratitude into a performance. Amen.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 1 Timothy 2:1-2

Choose one public concern that has occupied your mind this week. Before sharing another angry comment, pray specifically for the people involved: a decision-maker, those carrying out the decision, and those likely to be harmed if it is handled poorly. Ask for wisdom, truthfulness, and protection of vulnerable neighbors. You do not need to approve a policy in order to pray for the people responsible for it. Then identify a peaceful action within your reach, such as checking reliable information, writing a respectful message to a representative, or supporting a local service. Paul directs prayer beyond our preferred circle, including rulers, because the conditions of public life affect ordinary households. This is not a guarantee of immediate political improvement. It is an invitation to respond with concern instead of letting outrage consume every available word.

God, I bring You those with authority and those who feel powerless beneath their choices. Give public servants wisdom to listen and courage to reject wrongdoing. Protect families facing violence, displacement, or insecurity. Keep my concern from becoming contempt for people I have never met. Help me seek accurate information, speak without cruelty, and take a responsible action where I can. Let my prayers include people whose views differ from mine, and make me faithful in the small public responsibilities entrusted to me. Amen.

Rejoice evermore.Pray without ceasing.In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

God desires that we rejoice always and be thankful in every situation. This may sound like it's "easier said than done" but when you are in Christ, it is very possible. By praying continually – which is something else God desires that we do – we are reminded of God's faithfulness and His goodness. This is how we are able to rejoice and give thanks in every situation; it's because we know that He is always with us.

Dear God, I thank You that in every situation I am able to rejoice because of Your faithfulness and Your unfailing goodness. Lord, even in the toughest situations, I have joy because there is nothing greater on this earth than You and Your love. Thank You for always being with me, Lord. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:7-8

Jesus wasn't afraid to be seen with different kinds of people – regardless of their social standing. The Pharisees called Jesus all kinds of names because of the people He was found visiting, but Jesus didn't care. Classism and any other form of prejudice are not welcome in the life of a beginner. We are called to love everyone and reach out to every person and preach the gospel to them. How can we exemplify the love of God if we choose to be prejudiced towards a certain group of people?

Dear God, I thank You for the love that is in my heart. Thank You for setting the example of how we are to love everyone around us. Lord, if I harbor any prejudice may You make it known to me and may You help me deal with it. I desire to treat everyone equally with the love that You have given to me so freely. In Jesus' name, I pray Amen

Dear God, I thank You for Your grace You gave me so freely when Your Son came and died for me, resurrected from the dead, and set me free. I live a life that I do not deserve but You still gave, all because of Your love for me. It is because of this I am filled with joy and I bless Your name, Lord. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. Isaiah 54:17

There is nothing the devil tries that will be able to sn**ch you out of God's hand. He will try to attack you with all kinds of weapons and he will use people to try and bring you down with harsh words and damaging untruths. But none of these attacks of the enemy will ever be able to prevail against you. Not while God, your Father, is still around. Not ever.

Dear God, I thank You for the assurance You have given me that no matter what may happen or come my way, You will always be there to protect me and help me overcome the wiles of the enemy. Lord, I know that the devil will try time and time again to bring me down but I am not shaken, for You are my refuge. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
