Trip to Costa Rica for Students, Alumni and Friends of the College
Continuing the Biology department’s tradition of experiential learning; students, alumni, and friends are invited to travel to Costa Rica in May of 2023. From the bustling city of San Jose to the verdant cloud forests of Monteverde, see and experience diverse ecosystems and the organisms that live there. Hike to a waterfall in La Fortuna, stop and watch the leaf cutter ants along the way and in the evening soak in volcanic hot springs. Take a zip line canopy tour and see the cloud forest the way the birds and monkeys do. Go for an ocean swim at Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific coast and visit a coffee plantation. If you are interested in traveling with us, please contact Prof. Matthew Waterman via email at [email protected] for more information. ENC Life Science Program selected to join HHMI sponsored SEA-PHAGES project

We are excited to announce that the ENC Life Science Program has been selected to join the Howard Hughes Medical Institute sponsored SEA-PHAGES project. The goal of the project is to involve undergraduate students in real world research early in their academic careers. At ENC, first year students majoring in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, environmental science, and health science will participate in a year-long research project studying bacteriophage diversity as part of their introductory biology coursework. In the fall, students will collect soil samples from the local environment, so they can isolate, purify, characterize, and ultimately extract DNA from the bacteriophage present in the soil, for sequencing and further analysis. In the spring semester, students will use bioinformatics tools to annotate their bacteriophage genomes and submit the novel sequence data to the National Center for Biotechnology Information GenBank database, with students listed as co-authors, so the worldwide scientific community has access to their research results. At the end of the year, students have the opportunity to attend the annual SEA-PHAGES Symposium hosted by HHMI to present their results and meet other student-scientists involved in the program from around the world.

Celebrating the Class of 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣0️⃣!
What a wonderful time we had last evening celebrating with the graduates of the Life and Chemical Sciences programs!
Senior Superlatives announced, Outstanding Seniors recognized, words of encouragement from the book of Daniel given, memories shared and appreciations expressed. There was a lot of laughter, a few tears but mostly the simple joy of just "being together". Until we meet again grads - you are loved!🎓❤🎉
