Speaking of Peace, Seeking One Soul

This week, I attended an international Christian peace conference at the Korea Press Center in Seoul under the theme, “Churches Working for Healing, Reconciliation, and Peace.” The conference addressed the church’s calling in places of conflict around the world, including Palestine and Ukraine, as well as the church’s role in working for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

But something unexpected happened during my visit to Korea. A pastor in New York who heard that I was going to Korea contacted me. “My father is 93 years old. He firmly follows the teachings of Confucius and has lived his entire life with sincerity, diligence, and integrity. He has devoted himself to his family and loves his children deeply. Both my sister and I are pastors, but our father does not believe in Jesus. Would you please meet him and help him come to faith in Christ and receive salvation?”

At first, I told her that it would be difficult for me to find the time. But after I hung up the phone, I could not find peace in my heart. It felt as though God were asking me, “Are you really a pastor?” So, I told her I would go and meet him. Only then did I discover that he did not live in Seoul. He lived in Gangwon Province, at least 2 hours drive from Seoul. Thankfully, a friend of mine came with his car, and we made the trip together.

I spent nearly two hours talking with this elderly gentleman. As I listened to him, I was deeply impressed by the kind of man he was. He had lived a good and upright life, earning the respect of others. He had built a successful business and raised children of whom he was very proud. He told me that just as he respected his children’s Christian faith, he wanted them to respect his decision to follow the teachings of Confucius.

We talked for a long time, but I could find no opening. Finally, I said to him, “From my own experience, I have learned that a father is not only a father while he is alive. Even after he is gone, he remains a father—sometimes even more vividly in the hearts of his children. I don’t think you would want your daughters, who are both pastors, to live with a lifelong sorrow after you are gone, thinking, ‘We could not help our father come to faith in Jesus.’”

He looked at me and said, “I will take those words deeply to heart.” As we were saying goodbye, he said something else that stayed with me. “Just as you listened seriously to my story today, I have taken your words into my heart as well.”

On our way back, the pastor friend who had driven me said, “At first, I thought it was remarkable that you would take time away from the conference and travel all the way to Gangwon Province just to meet this one elderly man. But as I watched the two of you sit there for such a long time, speaking so seriously with each other, there was something mysterious—even sacred—about it.”

I pray that the Holy Spirit will move this gentleman’s heart.

평화를 말하다, 한 영혼을 찾아가다

이번 주간 저는 한국프레스센터 국제회의장에서 열린 “치유와 화해, 평화를 일구는 교회” 주제로 모인 세계 기독교 평화대회에 참석했습니다. 이번 회의에서는 팔레스타인, 우크라이나를 포함한 세계 분쟁지역 그리고 한반도 평화를 위한 교회의 사명을 다루었습니다.

그런데 한국 방문 중 특별한 일이 있었습니다. 제가 한국에 간다는 소식을 들은 목사 한 분이 연락을 했습니다. “제 아버지가 93세이신데 공자의 가르침을 굳게 믿으시고 항상 성실, 근면, 정직하게 사셨고 가족을 위한 헌신과 자식 사랑이 지극하세요. 저도 언니도 목사인데 아버지는 예수를 믿지 않으세요. 아버지 예수 믿고 구원받도록 한번 만나주세요.” 시간을 내기 어렵다고 했습니다. 그런데 전화를 끊고 마음이 편치 않았습니다. 하나님이 “네가 목사냐?” 하시는 것 같았습니다. 그래서 찾아 뵙겠다고 했는데 알고 보니 서울이 아니고 강원도입니다. 다행히 후배 목사가 차를 가지고 와서 함께 다녀왔습니다.

거의 두 시간 말씀을 나누면서 참 대단한 어른이라는 감동이 왔습니다. 선하고 의로운 삶으로 사람들에게 존경받으시고 사업을 잘 일구셔서 자녀들을 모두 자랑스럽게 키우셨습니다. 본인이 자녀들이 예수 믿는 것 존중하듯이 자신이 공자님 말씀 따르는 것 존중하기를 바라셨습니다.

긴 시간 말씀 나누어도 틈이 보이지 않기에 이렇게 말씀드렸습니다. “제 경우를 보니 아버지는 살아서 만이 아니라 떠나도 더 생생하게 아버지세요. 어르신 세상 떠나신 후 목사인 따님들이 아버지 예수 믿도록 돕지 못해 평생 가슴 아파하는 일은 원치 않으실 것 같아요.” 그랬더니 “지금 그 말씀 제가 깊이 새겨듣겠습니다” 하십니다. 헤어지는데 “오늘 제 이야기를 목사님이 진지하게 들어 주신 것처럼 오늘 목사님 말씀이 제 마음에 담겨졌어요” 하십니다.

오는 길에 후배가 “회의 일정 빼고 그 어른 만나러 강원도까지 찾아가는 형이 신기하다 했어. 그런데 긴 시간 그 어른과 형이 진지하게 대화하는 모습이 무척 신기하고 신비롭더라” 합니다. 성령께서 그 어르신 마음을 움직여 주시기를 기도합니다.

중고등부와 유초등부가 함께 캠핑을 다녀왔습니다.

아름다운 자연 속에서 함께 식사하고, 이야기 나누고, 즐겁게 활동하며 서로 더욱 가까워지는 감사한 시간을 보냈습니다.

함께해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드리며, 앞으로도 아이들이 함께 좋은 추억을 만들어가기를 소망합니다.

A Small Drop in the River of Peace

Tonight, I am flying to Korea. From Wednesday through Saturday, I will be attending the 2026 International Ecumenical Peace Convocation, jointly hosted by the World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches in Korea.

To be honest, it is not easy for me to make this trip. I also felt that perhaps it was time for someone else to go in my place. I told the organizers so. But they said to me, “Rev. Kim, there really isn’t anyone from the United States who can attend this gathering. We know it is difficult for you, but please come and be there for us.”

Usually, pastors serving local churches do not attend gatherings like this. Most of the participants are denominational leaders and representatives.

I have been involved in ecumenical gatherings for peace on the Korean Peninsula since the 1980s. My wife sometimes teases me, saying, “If representatives of churches from around the world have met so many times to talk about reunification and peace, shouldn’t Korea have been reunited and at peace by now?” Still, I have not given up.

A younger pastor in Korea recently called me and asked, “Are you coming again this time?” I told him, “Rev. We Chang really should be going this time, but he cannot make it. Traveling back and forth to Korea is getting harder for me, too. I think this may be my last one.”

There is a special reason Rev. Chang should be there. Forty years ago, We Chang’s late father Bishop Ki-Chun Chang participated as a representative of the Korean church in the historic first face-to-face meeting between North and South Korean Christians in Glion, Switzerland. At that meeting, he celebrated Holy Communion together with a representative from North Korea. This year’s peace convocation commemorates the 40th anniversary of that historic Glion meeting.

Then, on September 15, I will attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the Laos Peace Center, which is being established in celebration of our 50th anniversary. The ceremony was scheduled during my time in Korea so that I could be there.

Government officials will attend, along with the leaders of ten surrounding villages. It is expected to become a major celebration for the whole community. Since Laos is a communist country, our groundbreaking worship service will be held privately.

We have received precious offerings for this project. Deciding which country, the center should be built in and what kind of ministry it should serve required a great deal of prayer, time, energy, and discernment. Now that we are finally able to break ground, my heart is filled with gratitude for God’s grace. Even getting there will not be easy. I will have to change planes twice on the way.

Over the years, whenever I have attended meetings connected with the World Council of Churches, all kinds of strange stories and accusations have sometimes followed. Yet I continue to believe that Christians should not give up working and praying for peace.

I do not imagine that what I have done over these many years is something great. Perhaps it is only a small drop of water. But rivers are made of drops. If the churches of the world are trying to make a river of peace flow through places of division, hatred, and conflict, I simply want to add my small drop to that river.

My hope for peace on the Korean Peninsula has been such a drop. The Laos Peace Center is another. One small drop may not seem like much. But I pray that God will gather the small drops offered by many faithful people until they become a river—a river of reconciliation, healing, and peace.

Please pray for this journey, and please pray that our small drop may become part of God’s great river of peace.

평화의 강물에 작은 물 한 방울

저는 오는 수요일부터 토요일까지 한국에서 세계교회협의회와 한국교회협의회가 공동 주관하는 ‘2026 International Ecumenical Peace Convocation’ (세계교회 국제 평화대회)에 참석합니다. 이번에는 제가 가기 어렵기도 하고 이제는 다른 사람들이 가야 한다고 관계자들에게 말했습니다. 그런데 “목사님, 이번 대회 성격을 잘 이해하시는 목사님이 꼭 참석해 주셔야 합니다”라고 했습니다. 보통 이런 모임은 일반 교회 목회하는 목사들은 거의 가지 않고 교단 관계자들이 참석합니다.

저는 80년대부터 한반도 평화를 위한 교회협의회 모임에 줄곧 참여했습니다. 제 아내가 “그렇게 통일과 평화를 위한 모임을 많이 했으면 한반도에 벌써 통일이 되고 평화가 이루어져야 하는 거 아냐?” 놀려도 포기하지 않고 참석했습니다. 한국에 있는 후배가 “형 이번에도 와?” 합니다. 그래서 “장위현 목사가 가야 하는데 못 간데. 나도 한국 오가는 거 힘들어. 이번이 마지막일 것 같아” 했습니다. 장위현 목사가 가야 하는 이유는 40년 전에 장목사 아버님 장기천 감독님이 스위스 글리온에서 열린 남과 북 교회 대표 만남의 예배에서 북측 대표와 성만찬을 집례하셨기 때문입니다. 이번 평화대회가 글리온 대회 40주년을 기념하는 대회입니다. 아무리 어렵고 험해도 평화를 위한 강물의 흐름이 멈추지 말아야 합니다. 저의 이번 모임 참석은 그 강물에 작은 물 한 방울이 되고자 하는 것입니다.

그리고 한국 대회 마치고 9월 15일에 창립 50주년 기념 라오스 평화센터 기공식에 참석합니다. 이번 기공식은 그쪽에서 제가 한국에 들어가는 기간을 배려해서 가능했습니다. 정부 관계자들은 물론 주변 마을 이장 10명이 참석하여 동네 큰 잔치가 열릴 것입니다. 공산국가입니다. 기공 예배는 비공식으로 드릴 것입니다. 귀한 헌금이 있었고 어느 나라 어떤 내용으로 할지 결정하는 것도 많은 에너지와 시간이 걸렸습니다. 드디어 기공식을 하게 되어 감사와 은혜가 큽니다.

기공식을 위해 가는 길도 비행기를 두 번 갈아타야 하는 먼 길입니다. 그리고 세계교회협의회(WCC)와 관계된 회의에 참석하고 오면 언제나 별 희한한 말들이 난무했습니다. 기도 부탁드립니다.

중고등부 학생들과 유초등부 아이들, 그리고 부모님들이 함께 바다로 아웃팅을 다녀왔습니다!

교회 밖에서 함께 웃고 교제하며 서로를 더 알아가고, 믿음 안에서 한 공동체로 더욱 가까워지는 소중한 시간이었습니다.

역사는 교회의 영적 재산입니다.

저는 이번 주말 1904년에 세워진 미국 본토 최초의 한인교회인 로스앤젤레스 연합감리교회(담임. 안정섭목사)에서 부흥회를 인도하고 있습니다. 약25년 그리고 15년전에 집회를 인도했으니 3번째입니다. LA교회 역사는 신앙공동체로서 만이 아니라 한인들의 교육·문화·민족 정체성의 중심이었으며 한국 독립운동의 거점 역할도 했습니다.

안타깝게도 연합감리교회 교단분리의 과정에서 가장 크게 타격을 입은 것이 남가주에 있는 한인 교회들입니다. 부흥을 꿈꾸며 예배당을 잘 건축한지 얼마 되지 않은 중형교회 교인들이 떠나 유지하기 어려워지는 기막힌 상황이 벌어지고 있습니다. 떠난 그룹은 예배당이 없고 남은 그룹은 교인들이 없습니다. 남고 떠나는 과정에서 상처받고 어려우니 목사도 교인들도 모두 힘들어 합니다.

교인들이 연세가 많아 저녁 집회는 없다는 말에 제 마음이 아팠습니다. 그래서 집회 첫 설교를 사도행전 2:17 본문으로 “하나님의 꿈으로…”라는 제목으로 했습니다. 성령이 임하면 늙은이가 꿈을 꾼다고 성경은 말씀하기 때문입니다. 저는 진정 성령이 임해 늙은이가 꿈을 꾸면 교회가 부흥한다고 믿습니다. 어린이가 예언을 한다는 것은 하나님 말씀 저수지에서 물을 마시는 것이고 젊은이들이 환상을 보는 것은 하나님이 이루어 주실 미래를 오늘 살아가는 것입니다. 늙은이들이 꿈을 꾸니 성도들은 거룩한 자존감이 있고 교회에는 기쁨이 넘치니 잃은 영혼들이 구원받고 복음이 흥황하고 교회가 부흥하는 것입니다.

사실 지난 수년간 연합감리교회 속한 교회들이 감당해야 하는 어려움이 그리 특별한 것 아닙니다. 교회 역사 가운데 어려움이 없었던 때는 없습니다. 오히려 초대교회는 스데반 순교 이후 사마리아로 흩어지면서 전도와 선교의 문이 열렸습니다. 문제 자체가 문제는 아닙니다. 다윗이 외쳤습니다. “내가 주를 의뢰하고 적군을 향해 달리며 내 하나님을 의지하고 담을 뛰어 넘나이다.”(시편 18:29)

역사는 교회의 영적 재산입니다. 이스라엘 민족은 수천년 과거의 역사를 기억하면서 현재를 이겨내고 미래를 믿음으로 소망했습니다. 오늘 교회 현실이 아무리 어려워도 우리에게 다른 옵션은 없습니다. 포기하지 않고 사랑하고 믿고 소망할 뿐입니다.

When the Old Dream Dreams, the Church Revives

This weekend, I am leading revival services at Los Angeles Korean United Methodist Church, founded in 1904 as the first Korean church on the U.S. mainland. This is my third time leading revival services at this historic church. I was here about twenty-five years ago and again fifteen years ago.

The history of this church is significant not only as a community of faith. It has also served as an important center for Korean immigrants’ education, culture, and national identity, and it played an important role in Korea’s independence movement.

Sadly, some of the Korean churches most deeply affected by the recent division within the United Methodist Church have been those in the Los Angeles area. Some mid-sized churches had built beautiful sanctuaries with dreams of growth and revival, only to see many members leave not long afterward, making it extremely difficult to sustain their ministries. In some cases, those who left have no church building, while those who remained have a church building but not enough people. Both pastors and congregations continue to carry deep wounds from the painful process of staying or leaving.

When I was invited to lead this revival, I was told that there would be no evening services because many of the members are elderly. Hearing that saddened me. So, for the opening message, I preached from Acts 2:17 under the title, “With God’s Dream…” The Bible tells us that when the Holy Spirit comes, the old will dream dreams.

I truly believe that when the Holy Spirit comes and the old begin to dream, the church will experience revival. When our children prophesy, they are drinking deeply from the reservoir of God’s Word. When our young people see visions, they begin to live today in light of the future God will bring about. And when the old dream dreams, God’s people recover a holy sense of dignity and purpose. Joy fills the church, lost souls are saved, the gospel flourishes, and the church comes alive again.

In truth, the difficulties United Methodist churches have faced during the past several years are not so unusual when seen in the larger history of the Church. There has never been a time in church history without hardship. In fact, after the martyrdom of Stephen, the early Christians were scattered into Samaria, and through that very scattering new doors for evangelism and mission were opened.

The problem itself is not the problem. David declared: “With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.”(Psalm 18:29)

I know how painfully difficult the reality facing many churches today can be. But we have no other option. We refuse to give up. We keep loving. We keep believing. And we keep hoping.
