Building Our Church Together

As we began yesterday's church bazaar, we repeated three simple slogans: Be joyful! Be thankful! And don't fight trying to do a good job!

The purpose of the bazaar is not simply to raise money. Its greater purpose is to share joy with our neighbors and to experience the blessing of serving together. The joy of working side by side is far more important than the amount of money we raise.

Beginning this coming week, the KCS Senior Center will move into our Vision Center. From Monday through Friday, meals and various programs will be provided for senior citizens from morning until late afternoon. Because of space limitations for the 300–400 participants who are expected each day, meal times and programs will rotate throughout the day. Nine chefs will prepare quality meals every day.

This partnership with KCS represents a God-given opportunity. One of the largest Korean-American social service organizations in New York and a church committed to serving the community are joining together for the good of our neighbors. I hope we will embrace this new opportunity for local mission and ministry with gratitude and enthusiasm.

We are not renting out our building because of financial difficulties. Of course, there will be challenges whenever a facility is shared. KCS will be responsible for the basic management of the space during its use. From late afternoon through the weekend, all our regular church ministries and programs can continue without difficulty. Most importantly, our sanctuary, educational facilities, and spacious fourth floor remain fully available for church use. Naturally, the nearly $400,000 in annual rental income will also help support the ministry and operation of our church.

A renovation committee for the Prayer Center has also been organized. For more than a year we have been exploring plans to transform the first floor into a welcoming space for children and youth and the second floor into a prayer and healing center. Recently, the Administrative Board decided to move forward more actively with this project, and for that I am grateful. I also hope that more ministry initiatives will be led not only by the pastoral team but by the lay leadership of the church.

Beginning in August, Rev. Yohan Go will join our ministry team as Executive Pastor, and Rev. Juhee Lee will join us as an Associate Pastor. With these additions, we now have more effective pastoral team. We have experienced many challenges due to a shortage of pastoral staff, and I want to sincerely thank all of you who faithfully stepped in and served during that difficult season.

As your Senior Pastor, I am excited and hopeful about the new season God is opening before us. I look forward to seeing His work of renewal, restoration, and revival among us.

May we continue building His church together with joy, gratitude, and faith.

함께 세워가는 우리 교회

어제 바자회를 시작하면서 기쁘게! 감사하게! 그리고 잘하려다 싸우지 말자! 구호를 외쳤습니다. 팔아서 돈 버는 것이 아니라 이웃들과 기쁨을 나누는 것이 우선 목적이고 함께 일하는 기쁨이 돈 많이 버는 것보다 중요하기 때문입니다.

오는 주간부터 KCS노인복지관이 비전센터로 들어옵니다. 월요일에서 금요일까지 아침부터 늦은 오후까지 노인들을 위한 식사제공과 여러 프로그램을 운영합니다. 하루 3-400명 참여 공간에 한계가 있어서 식사 시간과 프로그램이 로테이션을 합니다. 9명의 요리사가 매일 아침 점심 좋은 음식을 제공합니다. 이번 노인복지관이 들어오는 것은 뉴욕 한인 최대 사회사업 기관과 지역사회 사회적 책임을 중요하게 여긴 교회가 파트너가 되는, 하나님이 열어 주신 기회입니다.

교회에 새롭게 주어진 지역사회 선교의 기회를 최대한으로 감당하고 감사하면 좋겠습니다. 교회 재정이 어려워서 건물을 빌려주는 것 아닙니다. 건물을 사용하게 됨으로 인한 문제가 일어날 것입니다. 사용하는 동안 KCS가 기본적 관리를 책임집니다. 주중 늦은 오후부터 주일까지는 필요한 교회 프로그램을 하는데 문제가 없습니다. 무엇보다 본당 교육관 4층 넉넉한 공간이 그대로 있습니다. 1년 $400,000 가까운 임대료는 당연히 교회 운영에 도움이 될 것입니다.

‘도시기도원’ 개축(renovation) 위원회(위원장: 김양득장로)가 구성되었습니다. 지난 1년 넘게 1층은 어린이 청소년 환영 공간 2층은 기도와 치유 센터로 공간 개조를 추진해 오던 중 임원회가 중심이 되어 추진에 박차를 가하기로 결정한 결과입니다. 감사를 드립니다. 앞으로도 많은 일들이 목회실보다 임원회가 중심이 되기를 기대합니다.

8월부터 ‘총괄 목사’(Executive Pastor)로 고요한 목사 그리고 부목사로 이주희 목사가 목회팀에 합류합니다. 기본적으로 이제 후러싱제일교회 사역이 원활하게 돌아갈 수 있는 목회팀이 구성되었습니다. 그동안 사역자 부족으로 많이 어려웠습니다. 어려울 때 헌신으로 함께 사역에 동참해 주신 여러분께 감사드립니다. 담임목사로서 저도 하나님이 새롭게 열어 주실 회복과 부흥의 역사를 기대해 봅니다.

Love Is Not a One-Way Street

In the Bible, Jesus’ brothers urged Him to leave Galilee and go to Jerusalem. (John 7:5) They had seen Him feed the five thousand and heal the sick, and they thought He should use those abilities to become famous. Because Jesus refused to follow their expectations, they even concluded that He had lost His mind and went looking for Him to bring Him home so He could “live a proper life.” (Mark 3:21)

Many years ago, at a Eurasian Mission Consultation, Bishop Khegay made a statement that has stayed with me ever since: “Americans seem to already have all the right answers for the mission field. Why is it so difficult for them to ask questions?”
One of the greatest weaknesses of imperialistic missions is the arrogance of wanting to teach without first being willing to learn.

Sadly, the same problem often appears in our families.
In People of the Lie, Scott Peck observes that many deeply religious families produce deeply unhappy children. Why? Because people sometimes mistake controlling others with religious language for genuine faith. They use all kinds of holy words and spiritual arguments to pressure and manipulate others, believing that such behavior is evidence of strong faith.

Among those who are passionate about evangelism and missions, there are not a few who are stubbornly one-sided. Years ago, I visited a mission field in Africa and often found myself embarrassed by the behavior of some church members traveling with us.

At the airport, they began singing hymns loudly. When passersby stared at them, they sang even louder. Eventually, airport staff came and asked them to stop. Later, in a poor neighborhood, they entered a humble home without the owner’s permission. Standing inside, they wept and prayed loudly over how pitiful the family’s situation was. When neighbors gathered around, they shouted, “Jesus loves you!” at the top of their voices. They mistook rudeness and insensitivity for spiritual zeal.

Real love does not force itself on others. Real faith is not a one-way street. Before people can hear the gospel, they often need someone willing to listen to their story.

As one wise saying puts it: “Conversations before conversion.” Have a conversation before trying to convert someone.

“Pray more than preach.” Spend more time praying than preaching.

“Listen more than lecture.” Spend more time listening than giving lectures.

Love begins with listening. Faith grows through humility. And true evangelism starts not with speaking, but with understanding.

After all, love is not a one-way street.

사랑은 일방통행이 아니다

성경에 보면 예수님 동생들이 갈릴리를 떠나 예루살렘으로 가라고 강요합니다. (요한 7:5) 예수님이 오병이어 기적도 하고 아픈 사람도 고치는 것을 보고 그 재주를 가지고 유명해 지라는 것입니다. 예수님이 전혀 가족들의 기대를 따르지 않으니까 정신이 나가서 그러니 잡아와서 인생 제대로 살도록 해야 한다고 찾으러 다니기도 했습니다. (마가 3:21)

오래전 유라시아 선교협의회 모임에서 헤가이 감독이 이런 말을 했습니다. “미국 사람들은 선교지에 필요한 것들에 대해 정답을 이미 다 가지고 있어요. 왜 질문하는 것을 못하죠?” 제국주의적 선교가 가지는 가장 큰 문제가 배우려고 안 하고 가르치려고만 하는 교만입니다. 그런데 이런 문제가 가정에서 그대로 드러납니다.

Scott Peck이 쓴 ‘People of the Lie’(거짓말의 사람들)에 보면 신앙 좋다는 집안에 불행한 자녀들이 많다고 했습니다. 각종 종교적인 거룩한 말을 다 동원해서 사람 잡는 일을 열심히 하는 일을 믿음 좋은 것으로 착각하기 때문입니다.

전도와 선교 열심인 사람들 가운데 막무가내 일방통행 푼수들이 많습니다. 오래전 아프리카 선교지 방문을 했는데 동행한 어느 교회 교인들 때문에 민망한 일이 많았습니다. 공항에서 찬송가를 부릅니다. 지나가는 사람들이 쳐다보면 더 크게 부릅니다. 나중에 공항 직원이 와서 그만하라고 했습니다. 어려운 동네 허름한 집에 주인 허락도 없이 들어가서 불쌍하다고 울면서 기도합니다. 동네 사람들이 오니까 예수님이 당신들 사랑한다고 소리를 지릅니다. 함부로 무례한 짓을 하면서 믿음 좋은 것으로 착각합니다.

“Conversations before conversion.”(전도하려고 하기 전에 대화를 하라) Pray more than preach. (설교 하려 말고 기도 하라) Listen more than lecture. (강의하려 말고 경청하라)

“Spirit-Filled, Jesus-Shaped”

As I grow older, one thing I realize more deeply is that our faith must ultimately become visible in our relationships. No matter how much we pray, how faithfully we attend church, or how passionately we serve, if the fragrance of Jesus is not revealed in our lives, people will eventually walk away disappointed.

In Galatians, the Apostle Paul teaches that the evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit is not simply spiritual excitement or dramatic experiences, but the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Interestingly, every one of these fruits appears within relationships. The Holy Spirit is not merely a spirit that excites our emotions; He is the Spirit who transforms us to become more like Jesus.

I once led a revival meeting in West coast, there was one church member who constantly spoke about receiving “the fire of the Holy Spirit.” Later, the pastor quietly said, “She says she received the fire of the Spirit, but her temper is just as fiery, so people are actually afraid to stand near her.”

If someone is truly filled with the Holy Spirit, their character should become gentler, not harsher. Spirit-filled people bring peace to their families, health to their churches, and life to those around them. Yet many people misunderstand Spirit-filling as merely an emotional religious high. True Spirit-filling is becoming more like Jesus.

Who is a Spirit-filled person? It is someone in whose presence you can sense Jesus.

The Holy Spirit does not make the church noisy; He fills it with the fragrance of Christ. If our lives smell more like jealousy, pride, anger, greed, and division than the fragrance of Jesus, then something has gone terribly wrong.

Tim Keller once said, “Religion makes people proud, but the gospel makes people humble.” That may be one of the greatest problems in the church today. Some people know the Bible well, pray faithfully, and serve diligently, yet instead of becoming more gracious, they become more judgmental and critical. Without the Holy Spirit, even truth itself can become a weapon that wounds people rather than heals them.

The world today is not looking for religious people. It is looking for people in whom Jesus can truly be seen.

A Spirit-filled person is not someone who is merely emotional or loud. It is someone whose life reveals the character of Christ. Their words bring life instead of wounds. Their presence brings peace instead of conflict. Their humility points people toward Jesus instead of themselves.

The true work of the Holy Spirit is not simply to make church services exciting. It is to transform ordinary people into the people of Jesus.

And perhaps that is the greatest miracle of all.

예수가 느껴지는 사람

오래전 어느 교회 집회를 인도하는데 유난히 성령 단어를 많이 쓰면서 자기 존재를 드러내는 교인을 보았습니다. 어떤 분이냐고 조심스럽게 물었더니 담임목사가 이렇게 말합니다. “성령 불 받았다고 하는데 성질이 불같아서 시끄럽습니다.”

사도 바울은 갈라디아서에서 성령 충만의 가장 중요한 증거를 능력보다 열매라고 말합니다. 사랑, 희락, 화평, 오래 참음, 자비, 양선, 충성, 온유, 절제인데 모두 관계 속에서 나타나는 인격의 열매입니다.

성령의 열매와 육체의 일의 가장 큰 차이는 성령의 열매는 공동체를 천국처럼 만들지만 육체의 일은 지옥으로 만듭니다. 사랑 대신 미움, 평화 대신 다툼, 온유 대신 분노, 절제 대신 충동, 섬김 대신 자기 주장이 강합니다. 그래서 바울은 “성령을 따라 행하라”고 말합니다. 인간의 노력만으로는 변화가 어렵기 때문입니다. 성령 충만은 결국 예수의 성품이 우리 안에 살아나는 것입니다.

어떤 분이 처음 교회에 왔는데 예배 마치고 교회가 좋다고 여겨서 교인들과 인사를 하려고 친교실에 갔습니다. 그런데 다시 안 오기에 연락을 했더니 “친교실에서 본 사람들 예수 믿는 것 같지 않았어요”라고 했다 합니다. 무슨 일이 있었는지 알 길이 없습니다. 그러나 교회에서 듣지 말아야 할 말과 보지 말아야 할 것을 보았을 가능성이 높습니다. 성령의 열매가 사라지면 교회 안에는 육체의 일이 자라납니다. 살리는 말보다 죽이는 말이 많아집니다. 그러면 교회는 점점 숨 막히는 공간이 됩니다.

Tim Keller 목사님은 “종교는 사람을 교만하게 만들지만 복음은 사람을 겸손하게 만든다”라고 말했습니다. 성령이 임하면 남의 죄보다 내 교만이 먼저 보입니다. 자기 자랑은 줄어들고 회개는 깊어집니다. 그래서 성령 충만한 사람은 곁에 가면 예수가 느껴지는 사람입니다.
