Thomas Berry Place Thomas Berry Place is the new name of the former Bishop Molloy Passionist Retreat House in Jamaica, NY.

It is being named after Passionist Father Thomas Berry, C.P. 1914-2009 who was a great leader in the area of eco-theology.

Join us at Thomas Berry Place for our June Day of Prayer, Wednesday, June 10, 2026!

Andrea Oliva Florendo will be presenting on the theme, “The Romance of the Enclosed Garden, Song of Songs”

Andrea holds an M.A. in Theology & Religious Studies, St. John's University and a DDA, New York School of Interior Design. She is also the author of "The Liturgy of Flowers in a Mary Garden" and has designed the Mary Garden at St. John 's University and at the Immaculate Conception Monastery in New York

In a time when the world longs for connection and meaning, Florendo's book offers a gentle invitation to step back
into the mystical garden of love -- a space where the divine and the human meet in sacred intimacy. What first appears to be an ancient nuptial hymn unfolds as the greatest romance of all time symbolizing God's passionate love through the Incarnation. The speakers in the Song are identified as Christ and the Church, or the loving soul. Mary, who is seen as the first bride, a type of Church serves as a model for each believer. Love is the essence of our true calling. Be prepared to be wooed, pursued, and loved totally!

The day will include a Presentation & Artistic Activity about Flowers, plus a walk to the Mary Garden and Eucharistic Adoration. The $35 donation includes light refreshments upon arrival and lunch.

Thomas Berry
Priest and Geologian (1914 - 2009)

Thomas Berry was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. As a child he experienced a sense of the numinous wonder of nature, which remained a fixture of his spirituality. After entering a Passionist monastery at the age of twenty, he was later ordained a priest. The experience of living in China in 1948 awakened a lifelong fascination with the religions of Asia. After returning to America he taught the history of religion at Fordham. But increasingly, through the influence of the Jesuit mystic and scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, his interest shifted toward the meaning of human culture within the wider evolutionary unfolding of the universe

With Teilhard he drew wonder from the emergence of human consciousness in the wide history of the cosmos. We were now living in an ecological age in which we must realize our capacity to shape and guide the evolutionary process. This sense of our place in the wider story of the universe called for a new set of values and spiritual consciousness - a project he called the Great Work of our time. It required humility and a deep sense of responsibility for the ethical care of the earth and the fostering of a sustainable future. The ecological crisis of our time was also a spiritual crisis. Rather than a theologian, he called himself a “geologian.” Berry died on June 1 2009.
