The Holy Spirit is attempting to show us those things that be of Christ so that He can form Christ in us for Christ’s sake.

He does this by working the death of Christ into us who are Saved so that Christ can be manifest in our mortal flesh.

2 Corinthians 4:11-12
11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.
12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you.

If we would stop trying to get the Holy Spirit to work on our terms and simply agree with Him and the work He is attempting to do within our hearts, we would then find that which satisfied God and therefore we would be secure, stable and satisfied with Him.

El Milagro de la Palabra de Dios

Santiago 4:3
Pedís, y no recibís, porque pedís mal, para gastar en vuestros deleites.

En el contexto inmediato, Santiago está dirigiéndose a creyentes que estaban experimentando conflictos, contiendas e inestabilidad espiritual porque sus corazones no estaban sometidos a Dios por medio de la Fe en la Cruz de Cristo. En el versículo 2 dice: “no tenéis, porque no pedís”, y aquí en el versículo 3 muestra que, aun cuando oraban, sus oraciones eran estorbadas porque sus motivos eran incorrectos. Los motivos equivocados SIEMPRE revelan una fuente equivocada de confianza y dependencia. Estaban pidiéndole a Dios que satisficiera sus propios deseos carnales en lugar de buscar Su voluntad y Su gloria. Este versículo revela que Dios no solamente mira lo que pedimos, sino también por qué lo pedimos. La expresión “pedís mal” significa pedir de manera incorrecta, impropia o con malas intenciones. Sus deseos estaban centrados en sí mismos y no en el propósito de Dios. Esto concuerda con Proverbios 16:2: “Todos los caminos del hombre son limpios en su propia opinión; pero Jehová pesa los espíritus.” Dios examina los motivos del corazón.

Cuando contemplamos este pasaje a través del lente de Cristo y de Su Cruz, vemos que la Cruz es la respuesta de Dios para nuestras concupiscencias y ambiciones egoístas. La Cruz declara el fin de la confianza en nosotros mismos y el comienzo de la dependencia de Dios. Mientras nuestra Fe permanezca en Cristo y en Su Sacrificio, el Espíritu Santo obra la muerte de Cristo en nosotros (2 Corintios 4:11-12), debilitando la influencia de los deseos egoístas y produciendo deseos piadosos que agradan al Señor (Gálatas 5:24-25). Entonces nuestras oraciones comienzan a alinearse con la voluntad de Dios porque el Espíritu Santo, por medio de la Fe en la Cruz de Cristo, nos está enseñando a buscar la gloria de Dios en lugar de la nuestra. Este versículo es una advertencia de que las oraciones impulsadas por el interés propio no encontrarán la aprobación de Dios, pero también es una invitación a venir a Dios por medio de la Fe en la obra consumada de Cristo para que nuestros corazones sean purificados y nuestros deseos transformados. Como enseñó Jesús: “Mas buscad primeramente el reino de Dios y su Justicia” (Mateo 6:33). Cuando el corazón del creyente está ocupado con Cristo y con Su Justicia, la oración se convierte en una expresión de dependencia de Dios y no en un medio para satisfacer la carne.

The Miracle of God’s Word

James 4:3
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

In the immediate context, James is addressing believers who were experiencing conflicts, strife, and spiritual instability because their hearts were not submitted to God through Faith in the Cross of Christ. In verse 2 he says, “ye have not, because ye ask not,” and here in verse 3 he shows that even when they did pray, their prayers were hindered because their motives were wrong. Wrong motives ALWAYS reveal a wrong source of trust and dependence. They were asking God to satisfy their own fleshly desires rather than seeking His will and glory.
This verse reveals that God not only looks at what we ask for, but why we ask for it. The word “amiss” means wrongly, improperly, or with evil motives. Their desires were centered on self rather than on God’s purpose. This agrees with Proverbs 16:2, “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.” God examines the motives of the heart.

When viewed through the lens of Christ and His Cross, we see that the Cross is God’s answer to our lusts and selfish ambitions. The Cross declares the end of confidence in self and the beginning of dependence upon God. As our Faith remains in Christ and His Sacrifice, the Holy Spirit works the death of Christ in us (2 Corinthians 4:11-12), weakening the influence of selfish desires and producing godly desires that are pleasing to the Lord (Galatians 5:24-25). Then our prayers begin to align with God’s will because The Holy Spirit through Faith in the Cross of Christ is teaching us to seek His glory instead of our own. This verse is a warning that prayers driven by self-interest will not find God’s approval, but it is also an invitation to come to God through Faith in Christ’s finished work so that our hearts may be purified and our desires transformed. As Jesus taught, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). When the believer’s heart is occupied with Christ and His Righteousness, prayer becomes an expression of dependence upon God rather than a means of gratifying the flesh.

Codiciáis, y no tenéis; matáis y ardéis de envidia, y no podéis alcanzar; combatís y lucháis, pero no tenéis lo que deseáis, porque no pedís.

El mensaje aquí es para nosotros como creyentes que en ocasiones hemos permitido que los deseos egoístas gobiernen nuestros corazones. En el contexto inmediato, Santiago acaba de preguntar de dónde vienen las guerras y los pleitos, y responde que vienen de las pasiones que combaten dentro de nuestros propios miembros (Santiago 4:1). Usted ve, siempre es un asunto del corazón. Sus deseos de posición, reconocimiento, influencia y ganancia personal estaban produciendo contiendas entre ellos. En lugar de buscar humildemente la voluntad de Dios, estaban persiguiendo sus propias ambiciones. Sus corazones codiciosos causaban conflictos porque los deseos carnales nunca pueden ser satisfechos obteniendo cosas terrenales. Hay una sola cosa que satisfizo a Dios, y si no vivimos en esa satisfacción, nunca estaremos satisfechos internamente (Isaías 53:11). Las palabras “matáis y ardéis de envidia” revelan cuán destructiva llega a ser la concupiscencia cuando no es controlada. Ya sea que Santiago esté hablando literalmente o del odio homicida que Cristo condenó (Mateo 5:21-22; 1 Juan 3:15), el punto sigue siendo el mismo: el deseo egoísta produce acciones contrarias al carácter de Dios. Sin embargo, después de toda su lucha, contienda y esfuerzo, todavía no podían obtener lo que buscaban. La carne nunca puede producir las bendiciones que solamente Dios puede dar.

Luego Santiago expone la raíz del problema: “porque no pedís.” En lugar de depender de Dios, estaban dependiendo de sí mismos. Esta es la gran tentación de la carne caída: procurar obtener de Dios mediante el esfuerzo propio aquellas cosas que solamente pueden venir por medio de la Fe. Dios desea que Su pueblo venga a Él en humilde dependencia, reconociendo que toda buena dádiva proviene de Él (Santiago 1:17). Visto a la luz de Cristo y Su Cruz, este versículo revela el contraste entre confiar en uno mismo y confiar en Dios. En la Cruz, Cristo condenó la Naturaleza de Pecado (Romanos 8:3) y puso fin a la confianza del creyente en la carne (Romanos 6:6; Filipenses 3:3). La Cruz nos enseña que no podemos obtener bendiciones espirituales mediante esfuerzo humano, lucha carnal o ambición personal. Todo lo que Dios provee viene por medio de la Fe en Cristo y en Su muerte sacrificial. Cuando nuestra Fe permanece en la Cruz, el Espíritu Santo puede obrar en nosotros, reemplazando los deseos egoístas por los deseos de Cristo, y enseñándonos a recibir de Dios por medio de la dependencia humilde en lugar del esfuerzo carnal (Gálatas 2:20; 5:24-25). Nuestro esfuerzo debe ser juntamente por la Fe del Evangelio (Filipenses 1:27), porque todo otro esfuerzo es obra de la carne.

The Miracle of God’s Word

James 4:2
Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

The message here is to us as believers who at times have allowed selfish desires to govern our hearts. In the immediate context, he has just asked where wars and fightings come from, and he answers that they come from lusts warring within our own members (James 4:1). You see, it is always a heart issue. Their desires for position, recognition, influence, and personal gain were producing strife among them. Instead of humbly seeking God’s will, they were pursuing their own ambitions. Their covetous hearts caused conflict because fleshly desires can never be satisfied by obtaining earthly things. There’s one thing that satisfied God and if we do not live in that satisfaction, we will never be satisfied internally (Isaiah 53:11). The words “ye kill, and desire to have” reveal how destructive unchecked lust becomes. Whether James is speaking literally or of the murderous hatred that Christ condemned (Matthew 5:21-22; 1 John 3:15), the point remains the same: selfish desire produces actions that are contrary to the character of God. Yet even after all their striving, fighting, and contention, they still could not obtain what they sought. The flesh can never produce the blessings that only God can give.

James then exposes the root issue: “because ye ask not.” Instead of depending upon God, they were depending upon themselves. This is the great temptation of the fallen flesh, which is to seek God through self effort for for those things that can only come through Faith. God desires His people to come to Him in humble dependence, acknowledging that every good gift comes from Him (James 1:17). Viewed through the light of Christ and His Cross, this verse reveals the contrast between trusting in self and trusting in God. At the Cross, Christ condemned the Sin Nature (Romans 8:3) and ended the believer’s confidence in the flesh (Romans 6:6; Philippians 3:3). The Cross teaches us that we cannot obtain spiritual blessings through human effort, fleshly striving, or personal ambition. Everything God provides comes through Faith in Christ and His Sacrificial death. When our Faith remains in the Cross, the Holy Spirit is able to work in us, replacing selfish desires with the desires of Christ, and teaching us to receive from God through humble dependence rather than fleshly striving (Galatians 2:20; 5:24-25). Our striving is to be together for the Faith of the Gospel (Philippians 1:27), for all other striving is the work of the flesh.
