Given the predicted inclement weather, here is a reminder of the Diocese of Toledo's snow emergency policy. The faithful should always use prudential judgment when traveling.

Whenever a county/city within the Diocese of Toledo is placed under a Level 3 Snow Emergency, during which all roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel, the Catholic Churches within that geographic region will cancel the scheduled Saturday Vigil, Sunday, or Holy Day Masses. Roman Catholics in that region, therefore, are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass.

If Masses are cancelled, Catholics are encouraged to participate in Holy Mass via television, radio, or internet, making a spiritual Communion. When Mass is cancelled, all other diocesan, parish, or school events in that geographic region are also cancelled.

Honoring Sergeant Robert Rigoni and His Crew

On December 9, 1983, tragedy struck when Sergeant Robert Rigoni of the Port Clinton Police Department piloted an emergency flight bound for Kelleys Island. On board with him were:

• Deputy Bruce E. Mettler – Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office
• Dispatcher Michael L. Sweeney – Put-In-Bay Police Department
• EMT/Firefighter Duane Dress – Put-In-Bay Volunteer Fire Department

The mission was urgent: to reach Kelleys Island and aid the Police Chief, who was suffering a heart attack. Despite their courage and commitment, severe weather claimed the aircraft over Lake Erie. All four men made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

Sergeant Rigoni is remembered not only for his service but also as a husband to Nancy Peto Rigoni (who passed in 1989) and father to Robert Rigoni Jr. and Billy Rigoni.
