“But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the LORD; their vindication will come from me. I, the LORD, have spoken!”
Isaiah 54:17

In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus makes a fascinating statement that some have misunderstood. Speaking of believers, He says, “They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed”. Mark 16:18

Some Christians have taken the Lord’s words literally and incorporated snake-handling into their services. But that’s not trusting the Lord; that’s testing the Lord, something believers aren’t supposed to do.
Deuteronomy 6:16; Matthew 4:7

Here’s what Jesus’ words in Mark 16 mean: If you’re a Christian, then you’re indestructible until God is done with you. There is a day appointed for your death. And you have no say in when that day will come. Until that day, however, you can approach life with boldness and confidence. There is a purpose for you on earth, to BE a light in this dark world! That’s not to say that you should be reckless, however see Jesus’ words in Matthew 4:7

That’s certainly what God’s Word encourages you to do. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

The psalmist wrote, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”
Psalm 46:1

And the apostle Paul wrote, “But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one”. 2 Thessalonians 3:3

He wrote from experience. Paul survived a shipwreck and found himself on an island. While warming himself by a fire in this environment, he was bitten by a venomous snake. Paul calmly shook off the snake into the fire. The people who witnessed the incident expected Paul to die from the bite. But he didn’t; there was more for Paul to.

Hebrews 9:27 says, “And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment.”

Paul had not yet reached his destination. He wasn’t about to let a snakebite keep him from the Lord’s work. Books to be written, truth to tell, lives to love as God would love.

Likewise, there’s no need for you to worry on your Christian journey. That gives you the freedom to travel light, emotionally speaking. As Isaiah 54:17 says, “But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken”.

God will keep you and protect you in this world until He welcomes you into the next. So, be bold. Be courageous. Be faithful, be obedient, be loving and be honoring in all you do, proclaiming the truth: JESUS is still in the saving business!

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress.
Psalm 4:1

Stress is bad, but distress is worse. In Genesis 32:7, Jacob was greatly distressed. All Israel was “greatly distressed” in Judges 2:15, and in Judges 10:9 they were “severely distressed.” In
1 Samuel 16:14, King Saul suffered a “distressing spirit.” Job was in “dire distress” in Job 36:16. The apostle Paul spoke of the personal distress that overwhelmed him in 2 Corinthians 12:10.

Sometimes we go through periods of distress and great distress and severe distress and dire distress. But the most amazing “distress” passage in the Bible is in Mark 14:33 when our Lord “began to be troubled and deeply distressed” in the Garden of Gethsemane.

“They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.””
‭‭Mark‬ ‭14‬:‭32‬-‭34‬ ‭

If you are in distress today, remember that Jesus suffered His distress to bring you out of yours. The book of Romans says, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress…? Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
When we praise and worship God when distressed, our problems may not instantly disappear, but don’t give up. In His own way, the Lord will relieve you in your distress.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭35‬-‭39‬ ‭

Suffering is unbearable if you’re not certain God is with you and for you.

HE promised to ALWAYS BE with you!

And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 13:52

Earlier this year in Michigan the North Shore Police Department warned motorists that someone was placing caltrops on the highways. These are small, sharp objects meant to puncture and deflate car tires. As we all know, tires need to be filled with air; they are useless when flat.

The devil is constantly throwing caltrops in our pathway. We’re to be filled with the Spirit, but he endeavors to deflate us. Have you felt deflated recently? The normal and victorious Christian experience means being filled with the Spirit. When you’re filled with the Spirit of God, your life will be different. You will have a song in your heart, a spirit of thanksgiving in your personality, and a yearning to bless others (Ephesians 5:18-21). You’ll also have a contagious motivation to share the Word of God with others (Acts 4:31).

Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your steps as you choose to have a positive influence on others. Open your life fully to the Lord Jesus Christ and ask Him to keep you inflated and filled with His Spirit today.

The Spirit-filled life is not a deluxe edition of Christianity. It is part and parcel of the total plan of God for His people.

“When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. So they shook the dust off their feet as a warning to them and went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭13‬:‭48‬-‭52‬ ‭

It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.
Ecclesiastes 5:5

Parents sometimes hear their young children negotiating: “When will it be my turn?” “Just five more minutes, I promise!” Where do young children learn the technique of “promising”? Possibly from other children, but possibly from their parents. “I promise” is a modern version of the ancient practice of making a vow.

When they hide something from someone as a prank, then when asked, “do you know where it is?” they answer, “no!” is that a little white lie? Is it playing a prank? Or is it a flat out lie?

A vow in the Old Testament was a voluntary promise to God to perform a service that would be pleasing to Him in return for some desired benefit. For example, Jacob made a vow to serve God and pay Him a tithe if God delivered him safely back to his home (Genesis 28:20-22).

Vows were taken seriously; there were strict protocols directing their use (Numbers 30). Solomon warned about the dangers of making a hasty vow to God: “It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.”
Ecclesiastes 5:5

By Jesus’ day, the Pharisees had added layers of complication to vow-making, which Jesus unwound. He made it simple: “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No,’” Matthew 5:33-37

So as adults we are called to tell the truth and not lie to self about will “it”(a little or larger lie) hurt anyone! That is a lie in its self and the person being harmed when it’s all said and done is You, Me, then Others!

Choose truth! There is never a wrong time to be totally truthful!

Let your word be your bond. Keeping your “Yes” or “No” eliminates the need to apologize and repent before the Lord!

Devotionals by Pastor Bill 6/5/26

In his book about holiness, J. I. Packer wrote, “Holiness is actually the true health of the person. Anything else is ugliness and deformity at character level; a malfunctioning of the individual; a crippled state of the soul…. Holiness effectively thwarts Satan in his designs on our lives.”

We’re always concerned about the health of our children. We want them to get the right nutrition and exercise, to have the right medical care, and to be in a sound educational environment. But the most important way of keeping children healthy is to show them what holiness looks like. The apostle Paul reminded Timothy of “the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also”.

“You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬-‭17‬ ‭

It’s important to protect our families from destructive influences. What they need to see in us is warm, true, Christlike holiness. Prayer then becomes a great force. Spend some time today praying for your family. And then share a Bible verse with someone in your family circle.
Holiness is the substance of which happiness is the spinoff. Those who chase happiness miss it, while to those who pursue holiness through the grace of Christ, happiness of spirit comes unasked.
J. I. Packer
