Confusion. The dictionary defines it this way: causing bewilderment; difficult to follow; puzzling. The world we live in is confusing right. Think about this: How do you grow seedless fruit? Why do noses run but feet smell? In the word ‘scent,’ which letter is silent? S or C? If you are trying to fail and you succeed, did you fail or did you succeed? (Think about this one again!!)? If you punch yourself and it hurts, are you weak or are you strong?

I get many individuals who tell me the Bible is very confusing as well. And to a certain degree I agree with them. Life itself is confusing for those of us who take it seriously. We excel and educate ourselves on how things happen or how to do things, but confusion comes into play when we start asking why?

Let me give you an example. It is easy to get an adult to tell a young person “How to live their life” but when then young person asks why the answer gets “confusing” based on the adults’ character/morals/values. Many refer to this as worldly advise. Worldy advise is the direct result of how an individual views the world.

So let us add some more confusion. John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” 1 John 2:15 says “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. Same author tells us God loved the world and then not to love the world. That is confusing right.

Not really! That is why it is so important to know your bible and the directions it provides. We will clear this up Sunday and have you unconfused in a jiffy about the word world. It really is quite simple. Almost like; “What are two things you can never eat for breakfast?” We will answer all this on Sunday. It really is easy.

We have some special services planned for the summer and all are welcome to join us!

First up, this Thursday, we are heading to our new fellowship setting in the woods behind the church to enjoy an evening of outdoor worship music. Pack a chair and come sing along!

Weather permitting on all of our summer dates we can move into the church if necessary.

How do I look in this outfit? We all say that don’t we. We look in a mirror and/or ask someone close to us, “how does this look?” If we are totally honest about it the reason we do that is to determine what others will say or think when they see us. Even the most self-righteous person, if being honest, has some vested interest in what others say about him/her.
Social media is built on creating an image of ourselves, often to overshadow our short comings, so others will “know us.” Today’s society has a lot of “LOOK AT ME” motives. I am not totally convinced that this hasn’t been around since the beginning. Biblically, there are so many examples of pride getting in the way of making the right decision(s).
Self-worth, self-esteem, vanity, perception, pride. The list is endless and if we were to be totally honest, these words are very important to us. “I don’t care what other people think of me” is a common phrase but I’m not buying it. Even the most heart hardened individual has a desire to be admired.
Some Christians have created a scenario where there’s two groups of people, us and them. They even hold the gavel on determining what group you are in. In some cases, the process of changing our perception to advance to the Christian side starts. We use motives to change our perception, not necessarily our character.
This “us and them mentality” is NOT biblical and very dangerous. You and me are not different from them. Biblically it is all of us. God created the world and all things in it right. And he loved his creation, right? So, when we read bible verses that tell us to sperate from the world what exactly does this mean?
Thank God for John. This week we will take John’s world, remove an “L” and get the word. Everyone knows John 3:16 but please read the next verse. To me, John 3:17 is just as powerful and thought provoking as verse 16. It is written to unite, not separate.

A few weeks ago, we had a large funeral at the Church for our brother, Dan Schnell. We had a photo slideshow, and it highlighted many of Dan’s life events. The ones that jumped out at me was watching, in minutes, the growth of Dan’s three beautiful daughters. Pictures from infants to beautiful young women.

As we continue our Revolution series this week the memory of Dan’s funeral and those photos of his daughters hit me again. Having raised two children, Diane and I chuckle at how our conversation with our children has “evolved” over the years. “Say mama” to “say please” to “say something” to “don’t say anything.” The intellect of the conversations changes as well. From I will help you with your ABC’s and 123’s to I will help you with your IRA’s and 401’s.

A relationship cannot exist without communication. The need to communicate with God is essential for any Christian. Not just talking (asking for many) but also listening. So that brings us full circle back to the communication “evolution” that we have with God. You see, human conversation is based on calendar years, we talk differently to a 4-year-old than we do with a 40-year-old. (There is a lot of room for humor here) don’t we?
A Christian relationship is NOT based on calendar years. I meet “baby Christians” who are north of 60 years old every week. (And I hope that trend keeps going) I also interact with “old Christians” who are under thirty every week.

So, does the level of conversation (both talking and listening) to God change as we mature in our faith (not human years)? It is difficult to try and think about this rationally because we are so wrapped up in human years and the maturation process of ourselves as human beings.

John answers this for us this week. You can actually age yourself this week. Here is the neat thing. We have NO control over aging as humans. We lose our youth and we cannot change that. We can look at pictures and “look back” but we cannot go there.
As Christians we have COMPLETE control of our aging, and it is complete opposite of human aging. Really, the older we get the younger we should act. Children of God—sound familiar?

Need a faith lift? Stop in!

Who does not remember the Monkees singing “I’m a believer?” If you are older than sixty, you are singing it now. In my travels I really enjoy it when I meet people and, in their introductions, they tell me they are a “believer.” A Christian. According to recent surveys 62% of America define themselves as Christian and after years of decline it appears that number has leveled off, it even rose a few points in the past two years.
It can get a bit more uncomfortable when we start talking about their favorite part of being a believer or Christian though. Kinda like the song, when you ask who sang it most people know it is the Monkees but if you ask who Micky Dolenz is, you get crickets. We like the song and we all loved the TV show (The Monkees for you younger folks) but being a Monkeemaniac was not necessary.
So, what does being a Christian or a believer really mean. How do we define a Christian? I looked it up in the dictionary and there are five definitions including: ““one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ” and “the hero in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress.” That leads to this question; if 62% of us define ourselves as “Believers” how many definitions do we have? It can, and does, create tensions when we cannot properly identify what we identify with. Also, is my definition correct and if so, based on what?
I am somewhat embarrassed to admit this, but I have missed this part of defining Christianity the way the disciples did in my eighteen plus years of biblical reading/studying. I was close, but as they say no cigar. The apostle John has a short quiz to help us get the Biblical definition straight. I found it interesting and rewarding. Pop quiz this Sunday. No studying necessary.

Just tell me the truth. How many times have we heard that? The “truth” is dangerous, like a loaded gun. We use the “truth” in many ways but do really think about our “motives” when telling the “truth.” Then add “facts” to the equation to promote “truth” and it gets really muddy.
Example: Joe got a reckless driving ticket and paid the fine. That is a fact and the truth. Now is it true that Joe is a dangerous driver? Look at the facts and you can form a “truth” if your motive is to convince me Joe is a dangerous driver. Now you can also say Joe does not like me because I told others the truth about him. The “truth” is one’s perception of the facts with a sprinkle of opinion.
Now let’s add this. Did you know Joe’s ticket was 22 years ago? Did you know Joe has not had a ticket or an accident since. These are also “facts,” but if revealed, may damage the “truth.”
The more I lay biblical principles on top of human activities the more skeptical I get of people who advertise themselves of being “truth” tellers. Taking facts and forming truths can be a great self-esteem enhancement and make you feel like “king of the righteous hill.”
John does a fantastic job of instructing us how to use “facts” and “truth” to better ourselves. You see, it always easier to look at other’s people’s “facts” and “truths” than it is our own. John tells us to take a good hard look at ourselves to determine the “truth” before crowning ourselves “Moral Majors” of the “truth brigade.”
Using “truths” and “facts” to help/better others is not very common today. We tend to use these tools to better our standing and enhance our self-esteem, while degrading others.
Biblically, John tells us how to use these tools on ourselves and then on others to continually help us improve our Christian Character.
Sunday, we will discuss this in greater depth. The true truth makes it easier to do right. We will try to follow Joe Friday’s: "Just the facts, ma'am.”

I remember some years back I was heading a call committee at a local church and a leader of a Christian academy told me to interview the pastors wife just as much as the pastor. He told me that a Pastor’s wife is the most important member of a successful church. I remember chuckling at that comment back then. Not no more! Happy Birthday to the BEST pastors wife ever!!!
