After much discussion CBC leadership has decided to cancel services for today. While it is not snowing currently it appears that by the time our services end it will be. Add that to the bitter cold and roads that are already snow packed. With that we are erring on the side of safety for the body.

Dear CBC Family,

In 2 Corinthians 5:11-15, Paul concludes his discussion about the many spiritual and theological lessons learned through suffering and refocuses on the main purpose of his letter. He argues that since God uses suffering for many reasons, it shouldn’t disqualify someone as an apostle. Then he begins to explain the motivating factors of his ministry in a way that the body can use to silence those speaking against Paul. As he explains his motivations, Paul admits in verse 13 that people might come to two conclusions about his life. Some might think he was out of his mind, and some might think he was being perfectly rational, but there would be no mistaking his motivations, God’s glory, and love for other people. There was no reasonable way to interpret Paul’s ministry as motivated by a love of self. He concludes by reminding the church of the one underlying truth that drove the motivations of His life: Christ loves us and died for us.

We will celebrate that truth together in our worship by singing these songs:

• All Creatures of Our God and King
• My Hope is Built (The Solid Rock)
• Afflicted Saint, to Christ Draw Near
• Near the Cross
• All Praise to Him

As you prepare for worship, I encourage you to reflect on the motivating forces in your life. Has Christ’s love really constrained you to desire His glory and caused you to love others? Do you truly believe that you will receive what is due to you in a way that leads you to aim to please Him, not to earn His love but because He already loves you?

I also encorage you to continue to love and pray for those who are undergoing suffering and experiencing hard seasons of life.

In His Love,
Pastor Josh

Dear CBC Family,
We have already spent three months together studying 2 Corinthians. In some ways, time seems to be flying by. As I’ve studied this week’s passage, however, I’ve also become acutely aware that we’ve been examining one extended argument from Paul about the theological importance of suffering for a month. For Pastor George and me, the clear application for the church is to those experiencing suffering, and there is no shortage of such individuals. We continue to see members facing health issues, difficult recoveries, discouragement, and fatigue. To them, we keep encouraging with Paul’s words: do not lose heart!
There are many people within our body, though, who are not suffering. Their daily lives are filled with joy, good health, enriching experiences, and relationships, while pain and sorrow seem to be on the periphery of their reality. You may be wondering how much longer we will be studying Scripture that deals with suffering and when we might start looking at something more applicable to your life. If that describes you, this week’s message is especially for you! We will explore Paul’s summary on suffering and its power to change our collective view of the purpose of life, and see that the suffering of those around us can have the same impact on our lives.
We will encourage one another as we sing these songs together:
• Come to Jesus
• Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery
• Christ is Mine Forevermore
• Power in the Blood
• In Christ Alone
• Be Thou My Vision
Until we worship Jesus, keep looking for unseen things, and keep knowing the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.
In His Love,
Pastor Josh

Dear Church Family,

We have much to be thankful for. As a church family, we have faced many challenges – homegoings, injuries, hospital and rehab stays, cancer treatments, unexpected changes, etc.- but we have found that the Lord is and always will be present in the midst of all our struggles.

We serve the God who keeps all his promises and never ceases to love us. Our God has called all of us to be faithful as well. He has called us to care for each other faithfully and share God’s goodness and grace to each other and an unredeemed world. We are to live our lives in a way that reflects His love and grace in this world so that they see and desire a relationship with Him as well.

This week, the apostle Paul shares with us how God gives us opportunities to represent Him well. We must intentionally grasp those opportunities and spread the “aroma” of God’s grace and love so that others can see Jesus living in us. So many voices, especially online, are crying out to us, claiming they are telling the truth, but unless it matches God’s inspired Word, it only deceives us and leads us away from God. Come on out and be encouraged and better prepared to discern the truth from these voices.

Here are the songs we will sing this Sunday:

• For the Beauty of the Earth
• Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
• The King of Love My Shepherd Is
• I Will Sing of My Redeemer
• Jesus Loves Me
• Living For Jesus

Prepare your heart ahead of time by reading Psalm 138 and 2 Corinthians 2:12-17.

Striving to serve Jesus,
Pastor George Waggoner

Dear CBC Family,

If last week’s portion of 2 Corinthians was Paul outlining his ministry philosophy (sanctified simplicity, sincere directness, and spirit-filled faithfulness), this week’s text serves as Paul’s leadership purpose statement. He juxtaposes two main emotional outcomes of leadership: pain and joy. For those taking notes or highlighting your text, these are both terms worth noting because they appear at least 10 times in noun or verb form throughout this letter. One note on the translation of the Greek word for “pain” in chapter 2: If you refer to 7:8-10, the word translated “grief” is the same term. This will be significant as you read the letter as a whole. Paul clarifies that sometimes a leader can and should cause pain or grief, but this should not be a goal in and of itself.

Instead, Paul views the goal of his authority as mutual joy. This is why he chose to postpone his visit to this church, knowing that his presence would have been a painful experience given the church’s current issue with rabblerousers and so-called “super apostles” questioning his authority. There is much for us to learn about God’s plan for godly human authority in this text, and we have much to be thankful for in recognizing the mutual joy a church body can experience because of what Christ has done for us.

One additional explanation for this week’s sermon and the summer’s preaching is that both Pastor George and I want to help our younger (or young at heart) audience understand the rhythm of hearing the Word preached and allow the truth that is proclaimed to sink into their hearts and minds. To that end, with a great suggestion from Beth, we are going to create a simple outline for younger listeners to use. This will consist of a series of questions that may be formatted as fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, or short answers. This week, these will be inserted in the bulletins, but in the following weeks, we will print a smaller number to hand out to the children as they arrive. It is a privilege to make disciples of all ages!

Here are the songs we will sing this Sunday:

• Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee
• Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor
• The Power of the Cross
• Christus Victor
• Holy, Holy, Holy

May you find your joy in the promises of God, fulfilled in Christ, until we meet together to worship Him.

In His Love,
Pastor Josh
