Symbols of the Apostles

✝️ 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗕𝗢𝗟𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝟭𝟮 𝗔𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗟𝗘𝗦

In Christian art, the Apostles are often identified by symbols associated with their lives, ministries, or martyrdom. These symbols help us remember their witness to Jesus Christ and the spread of the Gospel.

1. ✝️ 𝗦𝗧. 𝗣𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗥 — 𝗞𝗘𝗬𝗦

The keys symbolize the authority given to Peter by Christ.

"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 16:19)

2. ✝️ 𝗦𝗧. 𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗥𝗘𝗪 — 𝗫-𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗗 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦

According to tradition, Andrew was crucified on an X-shaped cross, now known as St. Andrew's Cross.

3. ✝️ 𝗦𝗧. 𝗝𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 — 𝗣𝗜𝗟𝗚𝗥𝗜𝗠'𝗦 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗙𝗙 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗟

These symbolize pilgrimage and are associated with the famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

The eagle symbolizes the lofty theology of John's Gospel, which soars to the mysteries of Christ's divinity.

5. ✝️ 𝗦𝗧. 𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗣 — 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦

Philip is often depicted with a cross, representing his preaching and missionary work.

6. ✝️ 𝗦𝗧. 𝗕𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗪 — 𝗞𝗡𝗜𝗙𝗘

Tradition holds that Bartholomew was martyred by being flayed alive, hence the knife.

7. ✝️ 𝗦𝗧. 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗪 — 𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗟 𝗢𝗥 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗗 𝗠𝗔𝗡

The angel symbolizes Matthew's Gospel, which begins with the human genealogy of Jesus.

Thomas is traditionally believed to have been martyred with a spear while preaching the Gospel.

The club recalls the manner of his martyrdom.

Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot and is commonly depicted with an axe, symbolizing his martyrdom.

The Apostles left everything to follow Christ. Through their preaching, sacrifice, and faithful witness, the Gospel spread throughout the world.
