EASTER WORSHIP SERVICE
APRIL 12, 2020
10:00 AM

Easter Sunday
April 12, 2020
WELCOMING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CENTERING WORDS

Even in the midst of our Good Friday grief, a sparrow sings in the garden, heralding the morning, as sunlight kisses the dewy grass.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Shout for joy.
The tomb is empty.
Clap your hands.
Death is cheated.
Dance and sing.
Christ is risen.
Christ is risen indeed.
The night is far gone.
There is dew on the grass.
We walk with Mary to the tomb.
Lost in our grief, we feel abandoned . . . alone . . .
unaware that angels minister to us.
We weep with Mary,
for all hope seems lost.
The stone is rolled back.
Only his grave clothes remain.
Overcome by our loss, we feel abandoned . . . alone . . .
unaware that Angels minister to us.
A flicker of hope ignites in the soul . . .
wavering in the wind . . .
challenging the triumph of darkness.
Yet, surely there is no cheating death?
Gently, lovingly, angels question our tears . . .
for God is stronger than death.
Out of the shadows of the tomb,
the light of Christ shines forth in glory,
overcoming the darkness of sin and death.
In the depths of our souls,
the light of Christ brings us back
to the land of the living.
As the light of Christ dawns,
we find that we are not alone.
The light shines in the darkness
and the darkness did not overcome it.

OPENING PRAYER
God of mystery and might,
your wondrous love
always seems to catch us off guard.
We come to the tomb
looking for death,
but find life instead.
As we behold the glory of our salvation,
take us back to that moment of discovery—
when grief and loss gave way
to a glimmer of hope.
Before we shout our alleluias,
remind us of the moment
when despair was transported
into glimpses of new possibilities.
In the holy awe of Easter morning,
we take a moment of silent gratitude
that Christ calls each of us by name.
(Moment of silence.)
Shout it from the mountaintop:
Christ is risen! Alleluia!
Christ is risen indeed.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Receive our lament, Lord of Life,
for during your final days,
we turned away from you,
even after you shared table with us,
offering us the bread of heaven
and the cup of salvation;
and in your hour of greatest need,
we fell asleep while you prayed in the garden,
even after you urged us to keep the faith
to avoid the time of trial.
But we are here now, dearest friend,
remembering what it cost you
to know the joy we feel today.
May our lives reflect
the depth of our gratitude
to be known as your disciples. Amen.

WORD OF ASSURANCE
The one who raised Jesus from the dead,
offers us life and forgiveness of sin.
Rejoice in Christ our savior,
whose resurrection brings us life.

SCRIPTURE READING
John 20:1-18
The Resurrection of Jesus
20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples returned to their homes.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look[a] into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew,[b] “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

God is stronger than death.
Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good.
Christ is stronger than death!
God’s steadfast love endures forever.
The Spirit is stronger than death.
Let everyone shout out:
God’s steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord!
God is stronger than death.

HYMN # 364“Because He Lives”
Verse 1:

God sent his Son, they called him Jesus;
He came to love, heal, and forgive;
he lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, all fear is gone.
Because I know he holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

Verse 2:

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives;
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because he lives, all fear is gone
Because I know he holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

CENTERING WORDS

Darkness is falling. Our journey ends here, at the foot of your cross. Our journey ends where love comes to die.

CALL TO WORSHIP

When we are lost and lonely,
Jesus, remember me.
When worry threatens to crush our spirits,
Jesus, remember me.
When our words wound the people we love,
Jesus, remember me.
When we treat others with contempt and disdain,
Jesus, remember me.
When we come into God’s kingdom,
Jesus, remember me.
Welcome me home.

OPENING PRAYER
Lord, our journey ends here,
at the foot of the cross.
Darkness is falling.
The crowd is restless.
Our hearts break,
as your cries pierce the night.
Stay with us, Lord,
for we need you close at hand.
And when the night is over
and the journey continues,
give us the courage to stay with you.
Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Surely he has borne our infirmities
and carried our diseases.
I am the one who held the nails.
We accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
I am the one who raised the hammer.
But he was wounded for our transgressions.
I am the one who rolled the dice.
He was crushed for our iniquities.
I am the one who pointed and laughed.
Upon him was laid the punishment that made us whole.
I am the one for whom he died.
By his bruises, we are healed.
When I know not what I do,
do not withhold your love,
for we long to be made whole.

WORD OF ASSURANCE
Even as he hung on the cross,
Jesus spoke words of love.
To the thief, to his tormentors,
to a world of sinners, our Lord says:
“I will remember your sins no more.”
For you, Jesus carried that cross.
For you, Jesus bled and died.
For you, Jesus spoke words of love.
For you, Jesus offers forgiveness and grace.

TENEBRAE LITURGY

FIRST WORD:
“Father, forgive them,
for they know not what they do.”

We have all turned to our own way.

SECOND WORD:
“Today, you shall be with me in paradise.”
And we, like sheep, have gone astray.
We have all turned to our own way.

THIRD WORD:
“Woman, mother, behold your son.”
“Behold your mother.”
And we, like sheep, have gone astray.
We have all turned to our own way.

FOURTH WORD:
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
And we, like sheep, have gone astray.
We have all turned to our own way.
FIFTH WORD:
“I thirst.”
And we, like sheep, have gone astray.
We have all turned to our own way.

SIXTH WORD:
“It is finished.”
And we, like sheep, have gone astray.
We have all turned to our own way.

SEVENTH WORD:
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”
And we, like sheep, have gone astray.
We have all turned to our own way.

MEDITATION “Words from the Cross”

THANKSGIVING

Invitation to Reflect on the Cross
Our brokenness leaves us in need of God’s love and grace. With arms spread wide, our Lord invites us to find healing and wholeness. Let us bring our brokenness before God, knowing that we are not forsaken.

OFFERING PRAYER

What can we bring you today, Lord?
Your sacrifice is so great;
our gifts seem so meager.
Yet you open your arms to us
and accept us as we are.
Take our offerings and use them, Lord,
for the healing of your kingdom. Amen.

WELCOMING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CENTERING WORDS

In the dark of the evening, guided by candlelight, we come to remember and give thanks.

CALL TO WORSHIP

We have gathered in the dark of night
to remember and give thanks.
We have gathered around the Lord’s Table
to hear stories of our faith,
feast on the Word made flesh,
and proclaim God’s abundant love!

OPENING PRAYER
Gracious God, we have been called here
by your inviting Spirit.
As we come to worship and praise your name,
we wonder: “What can we bring you?”
In the dark of night, and in the depths of our hearts,
we hear your reply:
“Your love is all I require.”
So, in thanksgiving and praise,
we bring you our whole selves,
with hearts full to bursting.
Incline our ears to your word,
and open our hearts to the mystery
of this holy night. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy Lord, on this night of mystery,
we ask with the disciples,
“Lord, do you seek to wash our feet?”
It is hard to witness acts of selfless service,
for our actions are rarely pure.
Forgive our selfish tendencies.
Forgive us when we fail to live by your example.
Help us listen for your guidance,
and overcome our shortcoming,
that we may become your faithful servants. Amen.

WORD OF ASSURANCE
Brothers and sisters, hear these words of Christ:
“Just as I have loved you,
you also should love one another.”
We are loved and forgiven and free,
and made ready to once again
share God’s grace with one another.
Thanks be to God!

INTRODUCTION TO THE WORD

May the words of my mouth,
and the reflections of our hearts,
be received with grace,
and celebrated with joy.

SCRIPTURE READING
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
The Institution of the Lord’s Supper
23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for[g] you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

Holy One, we give thanks for your word,
which has been with us this day.
Help us remember the lessons you teach—
that through brokenness
we find healing and new life;
and that through the waters of grace
we find cleansing and rebirth.
May these words be written on our hearts,
and shared with the world,
that all may come to know
your love and your grace. Amen.

MEDITATION Rev. Dr. Donnie Anderson

THANKSGIVING

Invitation to the Offering
We have been called by God to offer our prayers, our presence, our hearts, and our gifts. In response to God’s generous love, let us offer what we can with thanksgiving and praise.

OFFERING PRAYER

Loving God, we give you thanks and praise
for the gifts you have given us.
May these gifts be used to spread your love
and your grace with those in need—
those who are in exile,
those who are hurting,
and all who are in need of your touch.
May these gifts be a celebration
of your very presence. Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING
Christ be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to God
Let us give our thanks to the Holy One.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is a right, good, and a joyful thing
always and everywhere to give our thanks to you,
who led the Israelites out of bo***ge into freedom,
who commanded them to keep the Passover
as a remembrance of how you saved their firstborn
from death, and how you brought them out
of the land of Egypt.
And so, with your creatures on earth
and all the heavenly chorus,
we praise your name
and join their unending hymn, saying:
Holy, holy, holy One, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one
who comes your holy name.
Hosanna in the highest.
Holy are you, and holy is the Lamb of God,
Jesus Christ, who taught us how to love
and serve one another,
and who poured out his life
for the healing of the world.
And so, in remembrance of your mighty acts
in Jesus Christ . . . we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Pour out your Holy Spirit on all of us gathered here,
and on these gifts of bread and wine.
Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ,
that we may be the body of Christ,
in service to all who are oppressed.
God of Moses and Miriam and Aaron,
God of Exodus and Calvary,
God of memory and hope,
we praise your holy, eternal name.
Amen.

BENEDICTION

Christian siblings, remember this night.
Remember the broken bread, the shared cup,
and the cleansing water.
Go into this night
remembering and celebrating
Christ’s presence among us.
Go in peace! Amen.

A Service of Healing
April 7, 2020
WORDS OF WELCOMING AND INSTRUCTION

GREETING

May grace and peace be yours in abundance in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
We have come to lift up our brothers and sisters before the Lord that they might receive healing.
Let those who seek God’s healing open their hearts to the Spirit of the Lord.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
And all that is within me, bless God’s holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all God’s benefits.
The Lord forgives all our iniquity, and heals all our diseases.
The Lord redeems our lives from the pit, and crowns us with steadfast love and mercy.
God satisfies us with good as long as we live so that our youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

OPENING PRAYER
Almighty and everlasting God, who can banish all affliction both of soul and of body, show forth your power upon those in need, that by your mercy they may be restored to serve you afresh in holiness of living, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING
Janes 5:14-16a

Are any among you sick?
They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.
The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.
Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.

MEDITATION

CONFESSION AND PARDON

Lord, we confess our day to day failure to be truly human.
Lord, we confess to you.
Lord, we confess that we often fail to love with all we have and are, often because we do not fully understand what loving means, often because we are afraid of risking ourselves.
Lord, we confess to you.
Lord, we cut ourselves off from each other and we erect barriers of division.
Lord we confess to you.
Lord, we confess that by silence and ill-considered word
We have built up walls of prejudice.
Lord, we confess that by selfishness and lack of sympathy
We have stifled generosity and left little time for others.
Holy Spirit, speak to us. Help us listen to your word of forgiveness, for we are very deaf. Come, fill this moment and free us from sin.

Here the Good news:
Christ died for us while we were yet sinners;
That proves God’s love toward us.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
Glory to God, Amen.

THANKSGIVING OVER THE OIL

Let us pray.
O God, the giver of health and salvation,
We give thanks to you for the gift of oil.
As your holy apostles anointed many who were sick and healed them,
So pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on this gift,
That those who in faith and repentance receive this anointing
May be made whole;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS FOR HEALING AND WHOLENESS

Name, I anoint you with oil in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER AFTER ANOINTING
Almighty God, we pray for all those joining us today
May be comforted in their suffering and made whole.
When they are afraid, give them courage;
When they feel weak, grant them your strength;
When they are afflicted, afford them patience;
When they are lost, offer them hope;
When they are alone, move us to their side;
When death comes, open your arms to receive them.
In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

BLESSING

The Lord who heals all your iniquity bless and keep you;
the face of the Lord who heals all your afflictions
shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the light of the countenance of the Lord who redeems your life
be lifted upon you and give you peace. Amen.
