Remembering Saint John Church

Remembering Saint John Church Remembering Federal Hill's first Catholic Church This page is dedicated to the community of faith of St. John's Church. John's became an Italian parish.

Our goal is to preserve the past memories of this once historic, landmark church. Founded by Irish Immigrants in 1870 it was the first church on Federal Hill and the largest in the Diocese of Providence, seating over 1,800 people. At the turn of the 20th century, the Italian Immigrants replaced the Irish on the Hill and St. It was the neighborhood church, it sat at the heart of Federal Hill for ov

er 100 years and the people loved their church. Due to structural issues, the diocese made the choice to close St. John's and merge with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in the mid-1990's. The beautiful historic building was demolished shortly after and now the church is nothing but a distant memory, a park now named after the church serves as a quiet sanctuary for the bustling Federal Hill Community.
