Oh! Are we having cake?
I have always been incredibly social. There have been many times where my extroverted nature would extend past natural social boundaries. When I was a little girl, I used to somehow get invited to birthday parties with people who I didn’t know. There were numerous times where I would be at a place, like Showbiz Pizza (Now they are called Chuck E. Cheese’s), and there would be a child having a birthday party and I, knowing that there would be cake and kids to play with, would go over and just start hanging out with the party kids. I would try to turn on the charm and usually would get invited to stay and participate, and of course, eat cake! My love of cake and parties has never waned. I don’t do things like this anymore, as age and maturity have taught me that inviting yourself to parties is not polite. I do wonder however, if there is something positive to be gleaned from my behavior. What if we adults, threw away social norms more often in order to reach out to people who we otherwise might never have met? What if we made as much effort to get to know the new people in our churches, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces with childlike interest; not treating people like strangers, but rather seeing everyone as a potential friend. What if we set aside our discomfort and reached out to the poor, the broken, the hurting, and the forgotten in order to find the hidden treasure within each of these souls with as much vigor as kids looking for treats and presents at a birthday party? We can often use societal expectations as an excuse to keep to ourselves and hide away in our own little bubbles, never branching out or expanding our reach past what is familiar and comfortable. Jesus didn’t call us to live like this. We are meant to be his hands and feet, and Jesus showed compassion and tenderness to all who needed his touch. Let’s do better. Let’s get out there and look for the cake, the goodness in life, and if we can’t find it in a particular place or situation, then let US bring the cake ourselves!
