Today is Juneteenth—a day that marks when the last enslaved people in the United States finally received word of their freedom on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As we reflect on this history, we can consider how often we talk about “waiting on God’s timing.” Yet the story of Juneteenth reminds us that God’s dream has always been liberation, while human beings are often the ones who delay it.

From the Exodus to Jesus to the words of Martin Luther King Jr., Scripture and history reveal God's urgent call for freedom, justice, and human flourishing. Juneteenth invites us not only to celebrate the resilience, joy, and contributions of Black communities, but also to ask an important question: Where might we still be delaying the liberation God desires today?

May we have the courage to align our lives with God's liberating love and justice for all.
