Is it your desire to be rich? Do you think about having more, making it a goal or priority? You've made that a pursuit in your life? If so, you may want to rethink that or even better, change directions and do it quickly. Life will pass you by and you will have very little, if anything, to be thankful for. Why? Because it was never enough. Here's a better "path" to jump on. Trust in the Lord, read His Word, make it your aim to be obedient and follow what it says. Be content with whatever He blesses you with, whether it be much or little. Work hard and enjoy its benefits. Make Jesus the important "thing" in your life. 1 Timothy 6:3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 they are proud of what they know, but they understand nothing. They are sick with a love for arguing and fighting about words. And that brings jealousy, quarrels, insults, and evil mistrust. 5 They are always making trouble, because they are people whose thinking has been confused. They have lost their understanding of the truth. They think that devotion to God is a way to get rich. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content... We see here that God doesn't promise to make you rich. He promises to be all you'll ever need! What a great place to be! Content in knowing Him and thankful for all He has done for us. pma

That truck's engine has been "tested tried and true". I just heard that about a particular engine the other day as I was looking for a newer truck. Another phrase used was "bullet proof". You don't get that kind of reputation from just a one or two years of good performance. It's good to give certain things time before we jump on the band wagon. That goes with people too. Putting someone into leadership before they are really known and observed for a length of time isn't wise. It can end in disaster. But when someone is found faithful, give them what they deserve. 1 Timothy 5:17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.” 19 Don't listen to any charge against a church leader, unless at least two or three people bring the same charges. 20 Those guilty of sin must be rebuked before all, as a warning to the rest... 22 Don't be too quick to accept people into the service of the Lord by placing your hands on them. Don't sin because others do, but stay close to God... 24 Some people get caught in their sins right away, even before the time of judgment. But other people's sins don't show up until later. 25 It is the same with the good things people do. Some are easy to see. But even if they are not obvious now, none of them will stay hidden forever...Letting other people praise you is a principle laid out in God's Word in several places. Blowing your own horn is not an attractive quality to have. Doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do is reward enough. Take time today to thank the Lord for all He has done. pma

Have you ever found yourself on autopilot, spiritually or otherwise?

Life is far more like a roller coaster than the train ride up Mount Washington. We don't tend to just keep moving forward always going higher and higher. More likely, we have some really great highs, some very low lows and even more often some flat spots. 🙂 They key is how we travel through these stages or moments of life. Sometimes we have to "talk ourselves down" or up depending on the day. Here we see the psalmist talking to himself and God as he goes from praise to questioning and back again. Psalms 42:1 As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When may I come to see God’s face? 3 My tears are my food day and night. People ask me all day long, “Where is your God?” 4 I will remember these things as I pour out my soul: how I used to walk with the crowd and lead it in a procession to God’s house. ⌞I sang⌟ songs of joy and thanksgiving while crowds of people celebrated a festival. 5 Why are you discouraged, my soul? Why are you so restless? Put your hope in God, because I will still praise him. He is my savior and my God. 6 My soul is discouraged. That is why I will remember you in the land... 7 Your vicious waves have swept over me like an angry ocean or a roaring waterfall. 8 By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I will ask God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I walk around in mourning while the enemy oppresses me?” 10 With a shattering blow to my bones, my enemies taunt me. They ask me all day long, “Where is your God?” 11 Why are you discouraged, my soul? Why are you so restless? Put your hope in God, because I will still praise him. He is my savior and my God... As we were encouraged to do in church this past week, "Preach to yourself". Remind yourself of how great the Lord is and all He has done for you. Be intentional in your praise of the Lord. Wake up each morning reminding yourself of how much the Lord has done, is doing and will do! Great is our God! pma

Sometimes, due to various circumstances, younger folks in an organization are put in charge. Even though there may be older people in that organization. This can be difficult on both sides. "I'm not going to listen to some snotty nosed kid!" Or, "These old fogeys need to get up to speed!" Neither of these attitudes is helpful to the group. Treating older people with respect is always a good godly response. Timothy was a young man given the duty of finding leaders of the church in this area, teaching them God's Word, encouraging them to live godly lives and organizing the whole thing. A very difficult thing for this young man. Here, Paul is giving his "son in the faith" some sound teaching and instruction to follow. We all would do well to take hold of this as well! 1 Timothy 5:1 Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity. 3 Honor widows who are truly widows. 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God. 5 A widow who is all alone, with no one to take care of her, has placed her hope in God and continues to pray and ask him for his help night and day... 8 But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith. They are worse than someone who doesn't have faith in the Lord... Taking care of family members use to be a given. Or at least it seemed like it. We grew up with my grandmother living with us. She was a widow with no one else to care for her. She was with us till she passed away. Certainly, there are other ways to "provide for relatives". But we must not neglect our duty to family. As someone used to say in my town, "People helpin' people". 🙂 Jesus came to do just that, to help all of us. He provided a Way to God and Heaven. Trust in Him today. pma

"Solid as a rock", we've all heard that saying. What a great way to describe a person's character when it comes to sticking to what you know and believe. Just curious, did anyone ever hear this one, "Solid as Sears"? That one fell by the wayside! It now would mean someone who didn't see something through to the end. Timothy is a young man in charge of a difficult situation. Paul is giving him encouragement to "stick to your guns". 🙂 1 Timothy 4:9 Here is a true statement that should be accepted without question: 10 We hope in the living God, the Savior of all people. In particular, he is the Savior of all those who believe in him. This is why we work and struggle. 11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers... It's a constant battle to remain faithful to the Lord and His Word in our world today. Letting our guard down will soon send us way off course. "Keeping a close watch" on ourselves and being an "example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity" is a high standard for sure. But it's worth the battle. Trust in the Lord for His strength and power to achieve godly change! pma

I remember thinking when I was young that when the older folks would say, "Things are getting worse.", that they were just exaggerating. This wasn't said in reference to technology or better products. It was referring to godly morals, people's character and attitudes. Drifting further and further away from the teachings of Jesus Christ and how He lived out His Word. I am not a "gloom and doomer". I think that, individually, we can turn this trend around in our own selves, families and those we have contact with. How? By reading God's Word, seeking to obey it, going to a Bible believing church, teaching it to our children and sharing our faith with others. But it starts with you and me. 1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. 6 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come... Another trend today seems to be putting more and more emphasis on physical health and well-being. And little or no efforts put on our spiritual health. The old "youth group" pat answer to questions about growing spiritually was, "Read your Bible, pray and go to church". The only thing that needed to be added to that was, "read and obey the Bible". 🙂 Make changes today. pma
