Hello Dear Friends,

Yesterday I let the church know I'll be retiring. From that letter:

"For the past several years, when it came to introducing myself in community settings I've done so saying "I'm the lucky guy who gets to pastor Prineville Presbyterian Church."

While I still feel every bit of that today, the time has come to let you know I'll be retiring as PPC's pastor Sunday September 10, 2023.

Very simply, there are things Kathleen and I want to do while we can; and, PPC is at a point where it should take a new look at its vision and mission.

Regarding this 'new look,' my views on vision and mission come from life experiences formed in earlier generations and pre-pandemic.

I cannot thank you enough for loving, supporting, and nurturing Kathleen and me as we've gone through the cheers and the tears that life brings. We will treasure these memories as we continue our walk with Jesus

And fully confident that God's Spirit is still at work, I can already imagine the smile on someone else's face as they feel blessed to be called as PPC's new pastor."

We will remain in Prineville and keep following Jesus Christ's call to love your neighbor by carrying that into our community.

COVID enhanced food benefits ended yesterday while food costs keep going up. Our food pantry is bracing for greater demand while also seeing a cut back in food to distribute. PPC has helped stock our local food pantry for years. If you'd like to help you can drop off canned goods at the church and we'll get them to the pantry - 1771 NW Madras Hwy, Prineville. For a list of the most helpful items email us ([email protected]) and we'll send you that list.
Be well,
Pastor Mike

Your generous gift of time and energy in setting up, food prep, serving, and showing up made it abundantly successful in all the right ways. And 4 Christ-centered faith communities (St. Andrew's Episcopal, Our Savior's Lutheran, Prineville Presbyterian, and Young Life) worked together in this fundraiser to help those lacking safe and stable shelter - as Jesus Christ calls us to do.

[Jesus said] “…when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’ ” ~Luke 14:10

Yesterday everybody was again in their ‘customary’ seats.

And when a new family arrived at the start of worship, the seats they settled into made me think of those who usually sit there.

What is it about the places we choose to sit? Possession? Comfort? Power? Authority? Convenience? A mix of all the above?

This seating question is a cultural habit that’s been handed down from one generation to the next for many generations. And even with the above teaching from Jesus, we find this cultural habit long before then (Proverbs 25:6).

Writing in ‘Psychology Today Bernardo’ Tirado echoes Jesus’ wisdom: “depending on where you sit you will initiate a different type of reaction from the people seated around you.”

The head of the table infers: leadership, control, and/or intimidation.

Sitting elsewhere suggests teamwork, approachability, and/or collaboration

And Mr. Tirado concludes that where we choose to sit “really depends on the behavior you are looking to drive.”

The above verse is from a teaching Jesus gave – while He was at the table of a rule following religious leader who had invited Him to supper.

Where would Jesus have been asked to sit?

And would He wind up sitting there?

Regardless of where He was asked to sit did Jesus insist that He sit somewhere in the middle of the table?

Like dinner invitations, there have always been lists that people put themselves on and places people put themselves in.

The challenge Jesus had - and has - is to reach across the boundaries of place and time and lift all people up.

To follow Jesus rather than those who pass off prejudice and hurtful judgment as some kind of a godly virtue.

This starts as we make ourselves more aware of those we’ve been culturally conditioned to avoid.

Join us Sundays in-person 10AM as we all sit together. Our livestream option is also available send us your email and we’ll respond with the invitation: [email protected].
