All are welcome!

As we enter this season of reflection and repentance, it can be comforting and inspiring to share Lent with others. Please feel free to join any or all of the services amd activities at Our Savior’s Luthran Church, many in fellowship with St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and Prineville Presbyterian Church.

We start off Tuesday with a delicious Shrove Pancake Supper! Join us!

(It might seem strange to start Lent-related activities with an indulgent meal, but there’s a long tradition here. Since Shrove Tuesday is always the last day before Lent, it is the day when everyon traditionally purged the good stuff from their kitchens—sugar, butter, flour, etc. What better way to use up all the goodies than pancakes?)

It’s Quilt Sunday at OSLC!

They’re not just beautiful to look at; you can imagine the warmth and comfort these beauties will provide to someone feeling cold, or sad, or sick, or alone for years to come.

So, how can you acquire one, you ask. Keep reading!

Each of these quilts is lovingly made by our WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) chapter. They are donated annually to Rimrock Trails to be placed on all the beds on Christmas Eve so that each student wakes to their own warm quilt, and the feeling of being remembered, on Christmas morning.

The remainder are donated to the Holiday Partnership, which provides food, gifts, comforts, and necessities to some of our neighbors experiencing tough times.

While our talented sewers donate their time, and some materials are also donated, WELCA still must buy many supplies. To do this, they sell several of the quilts each year. Most are at the bargain price of $65. A few really special ones are a bit more.

You can help this ministry. If you see a quilt that catches your eye, it can be yours!

For information, feel free to reach out to Laura Craska Cooper ([email protected]). Thank you for considering!

A Prayerful Transition

Dear Partners in Prayer

It’s hard to know where to start this week of praying for the world. It feels like good news is hard to find. All the more reason to join our prayers to the power of God to change hearts and minds, I think. If our hearts are grieved by the pain of the world, if we despair of hearing good news, imagine what that feels like to a God who wants to see people thrive. “What does the LORD require of you? To do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8). How would that work? We can’t affect the conversation going on in the White House as I write this, or feed the starving children in war zones, not really. The only change we can affect is the changes needed here, among the people we know, in the place we live. We can pray for peace, and then make peace where we are. We can pray for healing of war victims, and then take care of the people here who need healing. We can befriend, defend, protect, serve in the world close at hand, as we pray for the healing of the rest of the world. Some days it feels like a heavy burden to hold the whole world in the arms of your prayers. But never doubt that the love that you feel and the wish for all to be well puts you in sync with the God who loves the world so much that he came to join us in it.

A Prayerful Transition:

Dear Partners in Prayer

If you look at the calendar, you’ll see that we have a ‘bonus week’ between the four weeks of July and the four weeks of August. I’d like to dedicate the coming week to prayers of gratitude. For what are you grateful right now – today. When you sit in reflection this week, say thank you for everything that comes to mind, large and small. Let God’s Spirit open your heart to all your blessings and hopes and let your heart experience them all.

May I suggest that among your blessings you include those who make Our Savior’s a thriving ministry, even without a pastor: worship leaders and preachers and planners, those who teach your children, those who minister with prayer and support those who are ill, those whose hands bring food and blessing to the community of Prineville, those who manage your money and keep the buildings functioning. This ministry is so rich, and you have much for which to thank God.

May your week of counting your blessings be a blessing to you. I am grateful for you and the prayers that we share.

Dear Partners in Prayer

In this week when we pray for our community, we can rejoice in all the delights of summer in Prineville, as well as weep for closing economic opportunity. Pioneer Park is full of fun events and Fair is on the way. I love the long, hot days and the sky full of stars that summer brings. But at the end of the summer a lot of my neighbors will be losing long-time jobs. How to hold them both together in my heart as I sit in God’s presence this week. What is on your heart this week as you sit in prayer? Bring it all. Sunday’s lessons from Isaiah ( 66: 10-14) and Psalms ( 66:1-9) declare that God wants to comfort us like a tender mother, and that God’s loving power has set the world right. In a world of pain and confusion, I believe it. And I believe that our prayers are part of how God heals the world. So as you bring our little part of the world to God this week, let it all out. Ask for everything you want to happen. Ask for everything you want to see. Trust that the Spirit of God is in all you desire, and already at work to bring it all together.

A Prayerful Transition:

Dear Partners in Prayer,

The Rodeo parade! The Rodeo! Prideville! Family gatherings! Star parties! Whew! It’s been great. But it’s been a lot. In this week when we pray together for ourselves and our life of faith, is there a quiet spot you need? A resting place to catch your breath? Don’t forget to put yourself there – in the quiet where God’s whispering can touch you and restore your heart. So often our prayers are turned outward – for our friends, for our church, for those who suffer, and those the world forgets. So often we forget to pray for our own hearts, for our struggles of faith, for understanding of our calling as God’s people. Let me encourage you to sit in the quiet and reflect on your own deep questions. Jesus says that the Spirit prays for us when we don’t even have the words; so don’t be afraid to open your heart’s longings for the Spirit to pray with you.

In this time of transition, each of us is an important piece of how the ministry at Our Savior’s functions. If you haven’t had a chance to ask God where your piece is, now may be that time.

With you in prayer,

Pastor Barbara

A Prayerful Transition:

Dear Partners in Prayer

This week we pray for our church. Now that the Transition Committee has done excellent work in describing our ministry and what a new pastor could look like for us, the information is available for the world to hear about us. And so, we continue to be steadfast but anxious; capable but tired; confident but fragile. It’s hard to relax when it feels as if no one is listening to our hopes and dreams. Rest assured that the Spirit hears everything, and is already at work for us, though we can’t see how that works. I offer an analogy…..

When I go to see my doctor for a yearly physical, I’ve already been to the lab, and the assistant has taken my BP, so most of our conversation is data-driven. We have a chat about what’s going on with me, she gives me a prescription for a new issue, and renews the one for my old issues. And then before I leave, she puts the stethoscope into her ears and says, “Sit up straight, I want to listen.” She holds the circle to my chest, left side for a few moments and then right. Then she moves around to my back, “Take a deep breath in and then out,” as she moves the silver circle back and forth, holding each spot to hear what’s going on inside. “There you are,” she says. “All good.” I want to suggest that our meeting with the Holy Spirit in the coming week might be similar: a deep check to hear our heart and how we are breathing. What are your deepest longings for our ministry and ourselves? What do you think the Spirit hears when She listens deeply? You don’t have to hide your fears or your weariness, She wants to hear it all.
