Words for your Journey
We often define ‘Peace’ as the absence of conflict. In the Bible, however, peace is the state of existence where the believer has an inward tranquility regardless of their environment. Conflict is an unavoidable part of life—peace is in very limited supply in this world largely as a result of sin. God is the only giver of peace and peace is only found in our relationship to Him through Jesus. Thus the “Peacemaker” is the person who leads others to a personal relationship with God.
There is another sense in which Christians are peacemakers. In Romans 12:18 Paul writes, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” So many in our society go about looking for a fight [I often wonder when pistols at 10 paces is coming back]. One [especially if you are a believer] can disagree without becoming disagreeable. If you [including myself] cannot take part in forums like facebook, X, etc. without fighting don’t go there. Too many “Christians” are anything but peacemakers when on these forums and do not reflect the love of Jesus. As my grandma use to say, “If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Words for your Journey
There are two things in life that are difficult to do—accept forgiveness [mercy] and to forgive [extent mercy to others]. The reason for this is simple—to accept the forgiveness of God [His mercy] we must acknowledge the fact we are sinners, and we have wronged [or sinned against] God. Most of us like to think we are “good people who are always in the right” and we really do not need God’s mercy. As for other people, they are not as “good” as we are and do not deserve our forgiveness when they wrong us and one day we will “get even” with them. The problem with this common kind of thinking is we all stand equal before God as sinners doom to eternal hell for we all come short of God’s standard required to enter heaven. The answer is the mercy of God given to us in Jesus when Jesus becomes the Lord of our life. When we accept God’s mercy in Jesus it is required to extent that same mercy to others. In other words—to be forgiven we must be willing to forgive others. While this may seem difficult it is a small price to pay for our forgiveness.

Words for you Journey
This Psalms asks the question, “Why are you so depressed?” Depression is not a recent invention for it has been with us for a long time—since sin entered the world and is with us even today. You watch the news, your bills are greater than your income, family members are in the hospital, the list could go on and on—bad news is on every hand. It is easy to become depressed, but God is still on His throne. This Psalms was written by King David or one of his song writers during the rebellion of David’s son Absalom. All looked very black for David—he had two choices: lose the throne or kill his son. Not a good outlook—David’s advice-- Put your hope in God. No matter how black things might be—God will see me through the darkest of nights to the bright dawn of His salvation.

Words for your Journey
The past few years have been difficult, and this year is following suit. Inflation, tariffs and taxes make living a bit more difficult. Like many I worry on occasion about my future for while I have all I need now but what about tomorrow. Time will tell but having lived through a few good times and also a few bad years, if I trust in God there is no need to be afraid for “In God I Trust”. He has never failed me and will never fail me—that is good to know in times like these.

Words for Your Journey
The last few decades have been a difficult time for the Church in America. Church attendance is down—a brother who lives in Bluefield spoke of the 1950’s when the Churches were full and the jails were empty and now in the Bluefield area the Churches are empty and the jails are full [make of this what you will]. The last few years we have lived through a “pandemic”, inflation, and a war in the Middle East [and high fuel prices]. Most congregations have not regained the members who stopped attending during the “pandemic”. As Church attendance falls, many local congregations will close their doors in the next few years as a result. I wonder [I am not a prophet so this is opinion] if the Lord has used these difficulties to “prune” the Church of its “branches” that are not bearing fruit that the faithful might bear more fruit. God can use “bad times” for our good. Remember “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” [Romans 8:28] Do your best to be a “fruit bearer”.

Words for your Journey
We live in a time where knowledge abounds, and we have more access to that knowledge than ever before in history. I have a relative that calls his cell phone “the magic box” for with a few strokes of his fingers the knowledge of our world is at his beck and call. The ironic fact about our world of knowledge is wisdom is in very short supply. “Common horse sense” as one fellow said is not common nor is it often a possession of a horse. True wisdom has as its source God. When we begin to realize who God is [the fear or respect of God] then we begin the journey to wisdom. The more we know and experience God the more wisdom grows within us. Over the years I have known individuals who were lacking in education but in that they knew God, they were very wise. Want wisdom then seek to know and experience God.

Words for your Journey
The motto of our times: “Every man for himself.” This motto describes a situation in which people do not help each other and each person must take of themselves. When there is a crisis [and they are all to common] it is literal “Every man for himself.” In our society is close to this being reality. This is a failure to understand the fact that all we have belongs to God but as a child of God all He has belongs to us. The more we give of our self, of our time and wealth the more God will bless us. A Christian can never out give God for God will reward all we do in the name of Jesus. Reach out and give whenever or wherever you see a need and God will bless you beyond all measure.

Words for Your Journey
There was a book written in the late 1800’s by Charles Sheldon entitled, “In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do.” The phrase “What would Jesus Do” [or WWJD] had a resurgence in the US and elsewhere in the 1990s as a personal motto for Christian to guide their actions and attitudes in a world void of morals and direction. It is a method of thought Christians can use in making difficult decisions in a world without a moral compass with a couple of caveats: You must know Jesus and be willing to be led by His Holy Spirit. Knowing Jesus come by reading His Word the Bible—infusing yourself with His character as His word leads you to a personal relationship with Him. Then you must be willing to walk in His steps, following His direction and to experience the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. After a time, you begin to see the world through His eyes and to love with His heart and to serve with His hands. At first this seems like a loss of who you are but over time you become all you were created to be. I am not there yet but with His help one day I will know Jesus fully and what a day that will be.
