Paul Speaks to the Crowd
As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, “May I say something to you?”
“Do you speak Greek?” he replied. “Aren’t you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the wilderness some time ago?”
Paul answered, “I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people.”
After receiving the commander’s permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic “Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense.”
When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet.
Then Paul said: “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today. I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison, as the high priest and all the Council can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.
“About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?’
“‘Who are you, Lord?’ I asked.
“ ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,’ he replied. My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me.
“‘What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked.
“ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said, ‘and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.’ My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.
“A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him.
“Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’
“When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance and saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.’
“‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’
“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ” Acts 21:37-22:21
From this text we can see three key elements.
Paul’s backstory
Paul’s conversion
Paul’s Mission

Our story opens with Paul’s arrest in Jerusalem around AD58. Most scholars place the date of Paul’s conversion between AD33-AD36 , so 22-25ys have now passed since Paul began his preaching ministry.
Jesus said A prophet is without honor in his own country. Paul’s backstory was going to be a stumbling block to his early ministry. No one in Jerusalem would have likely believed his conversion or trusted him and word of his persecution of the church had reached at least as far as Damascus.
But Jesus had a plan , which is recorded for us in Acts 22:21
“ Then the Lord said to Paul , ‘ Go; I am sending you far away to the gentiles.
About 25yrs ago back in chapter 9 , Jesus appeared to Annanias , commissioning him to baptize the repentant believer Paul. Understandably , Annanias was reluctant. Paul was bad news. But Jesus was looking forward to Paul’s future and not focusing on his backstory. Jesus then reveals to Annanias that Saul the persecutor would become Paul the preacher; “ Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel.”
In our text Acts 21:37-22:21 Paul does much more than give his testimony. He teaches us how to use our backstory, and our conversion story to live out our specific mission.
In Acts 21;37-35 Paul reveals his identity. While in the modern world this is of little significance it was very important in the ancient world.
Paul saw a crowd of his own countrymen standing before him and he was eager to turn the stairstep into a pulpit. He didn’t want to let this opportunity slip by even if his audience was less than sympathetic. He requested the Commander's permission to address the crowd. Claudias Lysias was somewhat surprised to learn that Paul spoke Greek. He assumed that Paul was the Egyptian rebel who , three years earlier , had led four thousand rebels against Roman troops in Jerusalem.
Far from being an Egyptian rebel, Paul was a jew from Tarsus. He was well traveled, sophisticated , and noble. We don’t tend to consider a person’s birthplace part of his resume in the modern world. In the ancient world however; they did. Consider how often genealogies include a person’s geographic origin along with their family history. It was assumed that people inherited their dignity inherent to certain regions. Cilicia in general , and Tarsus in particular , had a reputation as a noble region that produced men of valor and intelligence. This qualified Paul to speak to the crowd.
Once Paul has established his credibility he tells his conversion story which I am sure we all know by heart.
Your backstory is important and interesting. I would love to sit down and have you tell me about who you were before Jesus. I`’ll even buy the coffee , coke or ice cream. Your conversion story is even more interesting to people outside of Christ. Inquiring minds want to know how you became a Christian and how the old you died and the new you was born. They want to know what Jesus has done for you. Don’t lead with “ You are a sinner in need of a savior.” Lead with I am a sinner being delivered from my old self. Why did I say that? “ I am a sinner being delivered “ instead of “ I am a sinner delivered from sin”? If I say I am delivered I am implying that I have attained perfection. If I say I am being delivered , I acknowledge that on this side of heaven we will struggle with sin and our only hope is trusting fully in Jesus who will completely deliver us when we pass from this life to the next.
The story of Paul is truly amazing. But I find it encouraging to hear contemporary stories of lives changed by Jesus.
In Late January 2016 , I watched an incredible story begin to unfold. I heard the backstory, witnessed the baptism and saw a new creation begin a new life and depart for the mission field.

Little Shots , married her high school sweetheart and they had three children . On the outside they were living the American Dream. House with a white picket fence, his n hers Mustangs , a pickup and a bass boat. But Little Shots suffered from depression. And in her mid 30’s she left her husband and bought a Harley and began living a life that would make the Samaritan woman at the well blush. She became an associate member of a motorcycle club that does benefit work for veterans. The club mostly rides from one American Legion to another . This is where she earned the nickname Little Shots. She is only 4’11 and could drink most men under the table. For over a decade her life was booze, co***ne , marijauna and men. She told me that by her estimate she had been with over 50 men.
But then something happened. After her fathers death she began attending church with her autistic son. And then she began reading the bible. And then she came to saving faith and in late January 2016 she was baptized into Christ at 49yrs of age. And was delivered from booze , drugs and men. Over the next couple of months she turned in her patch and sold her entire collection of Harley Davidson Motorclothes. And the Lord put it on her heart to go to the mission field. She immediately began raising money for a mission trip and in the summer of 2017 made her first trip to Africa to teach Sunday school. She has a passion for working with young girls. She saves her vacation time and personal days and every year goes to a remote village in Africa to tell young girls about Jesus.
She is no longer Little Shots; she is Kristy, our co-laborer in Christ.
So why did God call Kristy to Africa and not to bikers ministry? That’s easy , a prophet is without honor in their hometown. There are still those in the motorcycle club that doubt her conversion. Paul spent 25yrs on the road preaching the Good News before being arrested in Jerusalem. And I believe the day will come when the MC world sees that Kristy’s conversion is real. But right now young girls in Africa have someone to teach them the bible. Jesus sent Paul to people that would listen. That is what happens when we surrender to the Lord’s will , the Holy Spirit leads us to where we can effectively serve.
It doesn't matter who you are. It doesn’t matter where you are from. It doesn’t matter how messed up your past is. Jesus has a mission for you. But it really depends on us. Are we willing to lay down our will and say , Not my will but the fathers will be done. And will we encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ to do the same and assist them as they labor for the Lord.
Saul of Tarsus laid down his will and became Paul the preacher. Little Shots laid down her will and became Kristy the teacher. What is God asking you to lay down? Where is he asking you to go?
Is it your neighbor? Your co-worker? Starting a new ministry here at Mt Zion?
Will you repeat after me me

Good let’s try it again
THE LORD’S WILL BE DONE

In October of 1967 , Larry Jamison of Parkview Christian Church in Mount Carmel , Illinois received a letter asking him to come and start a church in Princeton . After much prayer and advice from other ministers on the first Thursday of January 1968 Larry started calling in Princeton to see if the possibility was there. Parkview allowed Larry to continue calling each Thursday thereafter , and soon saw that the “ fields were white unto harvest”!

Knowing, that he could not continue alone , Larry went to Harold Williamson , preacher of Lancaster Illinois , Church of Christ; Harold Hatfield, preacher , Oakland City Christian Church; Larry Schnautz, preacher of the Pleasant Ridge Christian Church near Lawrenceville Illinois , and ask them to serve as a “ Steering Committee “ in starting the new church.

These four men began calling together in February at Princeton, and began organizing and seeking out those who would help become members of the new church.

By March , 1968 , 12 adult Christians had committed themselves to charter membership of this new church.

On June 2, 1968 , the Princeton Christian Church met in its first public worship service at Farmers National Bank in the historic 1889 Room , with 50 in attendance.
That is the story of my home church. People committed themselves to seeking the Lord’s will and stuff happened.

THE LORD’S WILL BE DONE !!!!
When people commit themselves to seeking and doing the Lord’s will STUFF HAPPENS. When these men decided to be obedient to the Lord’s will a church was planted and as a result the gospel was preached and souls were won to the Lord. But none of this would have happened unless they were willing to set aside their own will and make the Lord’s will their will.

In our text this morning we see that Paul’s Attitude was ,” The Lord’s will be done”. Paul had but one goal in life , doing the Lord’s will.
Acts 21:1-16
After we had torn ourselves away from them, we put out to sea and sailed straight to Kos. The next day we went to Rhodes and from there to Patara. We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, went on board and set sail. After sighting Cyprus and passing to the south of it, we sailed on to Syria. We landed at Tyre, where our ship was to unload its cargo. We sought out the disciples there and stayed with them for seven days. Through the Spirit they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. When it was time to leave, we left and continued on our way. All of them, including wives and children, accompanied us out of the city, and there on the beach we knelt to pray. After saying goodbye to each other, we went aboard the ship, and they returned home.
We continued our voyage from Tyre and landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed with them for a day. Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven. He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”
When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”
Say it with me
The Lord’s Will Be Done
After this, we started on our way up to Jerusalem. Some of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us and brought us to the home of Mnason, where we were to stay. He was a man from Cyprus and one of the early disciples. Acts 21:1-16
So far Paul has been arrested , beaten , shipwrecked three times and ran out of nearly every town he preached in. And now , facing arrest, trial and eventual death Paul sets his sights on Jerusalem. Paul gives no thought to his own life. He apparently does not take time to reflect on the hardships that he has endured for the gospel. And clearly does not fret the persecutions he is about to face.
His only concern is spreading the gospel , no matter what the cost. In the Garden at Gethsemne Jesus prayed to the Father , “ Not as I will , but as you will”.

Say it with me

Not My Will

But the Father’s will

Jesus did not want to go to the cross , but he went in submission to his Father's will. Before Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father he gave this command

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Then on the road to Damascus Jesus confronts Paul and gives him his commission.

Acts 9:1-16
Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.
In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”
“Yes, Lord,” he answered.
The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”
“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”
But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” Acts 9:1-16
Jesus laid down his will and his life to purchase His bride the church. Likewise Paul laid down his will and ultimately his life to fulfill the great commission. While the bible does not record Paul’s death secular historians record that Emperor Nero ordered Paul to be beheaded around AD64. Paul counseled Timothy to keep his head in all situations.
Being beheaded for your faith is the only reason that a Christian should ever lose their head and I pray that you never lose your head.
Studying this text forced me to face some hard questions and make some decisions.

The first question I had to address was. In what areas of my life am I not surrendering my will to the Lord? The first was time. I had to go to my employer and tell them that they can have 10hrs a day M-Th and no more. Because I have responsibilities to my church , school and my spiritual health. They respected that and gave me skilled laborers for my department. In my weakness God gave me strength to stand , he softened Pharaoh's heart and sent the needed workers. What about you? What eats up your time? I pray that you are wise stewards of this precious gift from God. Your time is the most valuable currency in the world and how you spend it matters to God.
Another issue that had to be dealt with was not fully trusting God’s providence. Jesus said,

Do Not Worry
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:25-34
That is one of the first passages of scripture I memorized. But I have been struggling to live it. I am sure some of you struggle with it too.
Do you worry about the cost of healthcare? Or about your health? Do you worry about inflation?
Does worry about the necessities of life eat up your time. Are you so busy trying to provide that you don’t have time to pursue the Lord’s will?

Say it with me
The Lord’s Will be done

If we are going to do the Lord’s will we have to trust his providence. We have got to stop leaning on our own understanding and lean on the Lord.

And the third area is money. I am willing to say a lot of us are in this boat. Satan never misses a chance to tempt me to spend money on the pleasures of this world. There is nothing that makes him happier than when someone chooses the pleasures of this world over the treasures of the Word. Not a day passes that Satan does not whisper buy this it will make you happy. But that still small voice is still there saying , tithe so you can bless others, save for a rainy day so you are not a burden to others.

Where your treasure is is where your heart will be. Your heart dictates your will. Is your treasure in Heaven? Do you want your friends and neighbors to be in Heaven for eternity?

We have a lot of work to do.
So what can you do? Well that depends on your gifting. But we can all do something.

Repeat after me
Here am I send me
The Lord’s will be done

We don’t all have the same talents but we all have something to offer in the service of the King.
Do you like to bake? We need a welcome committee. Someone to follow up with first time visitors and take them some fresh baked cookies or bread or a cake.
We also need someone to take first time visitors out for lunch after church.
Do you like to meet new people? We need volunteers to knock on doors and tell people about Jesus.
Are you good at leadership? We need men to serve as elders.
Are you good at bookkeeping ?
Are you a handyman or woman? We need people to make the church inviting to visitors.
Are you a good host or hostess? We need people to host visiting missionaries.
Do you spend hours in prayer and bible study? The church needs your prayers.

If the Lord’s will is going to be done in Santa Clause we are going to have to lay down our will and our selfish desires and say “ Not my will but yours”
Jesus has ascended to the right hand of the Father. We are His hands and feet here on earth. The Lord’s will can only be done through willing Christians. I hope like Paul we are all willing to lay down our will and pick up our cross and follow Jesus , doing his will going wherever the Holy Spirit leads us. I hope we do it as a congregation and as individuals.

Closing Prayer

05/12/2026

Time and time again I have presented evidence that " Salvation without baptism aka faith only " is a man made doctrine. In this article Tom Collins breaks the conspiracy down through the ages.

THE RISE OF THE “FAITH‑ALONE / SINNER’S‑PRAYER / BAPTISM‑IS‑A‑WORK” CONSPIRACY:

The modern belief that salvation occurs at the moment of mental assent, sealed by a sinner’s prayer, and that baptism is a human work forbidden by Ephesians 2:8–9, is not an apostolic doctrine, not an early‑church doctrine, and not a medieval doctrine. It is a post‑1500 invention that can be traced with names, dates, and textual evidence. Its rise is a historical chain, not a biblical one. The conspiracy is not hidden; it is simply unacknowledged by those who inherited it. The myth that “faith alone” is the biblical gospel was born in the sixteenth century, expanded in the seventeenth, normalized in the eighteenth, popularized in the nineteenth, and industrialized in the twentieth. Its power today rests on repetition, not revelation.

The first link in the chain is Martin Luther (1483–1546). In 1522, while translating Romans 3:28 into German, Luther inserted the word “allein”—alone—into the text. No Greek manuscript contained it. No Latin manuscript contained it. No earlier translation contained it. Luther admitted the insertion, defended it, and insisted that Paul “meant” it even though Paul did not write it. This was the first time in Christian history that the phrase “faith alone” appeared inside a biblical verse. Luther’s followers institutionalized the phrase in the Augsburg Confession (1530), making “faith alone” a doctrinal slogan rather than a textual reading. Luther also declared the epistle of James “an epistle of straw” because James 2:24 explicitly contradicts his new formula. Thus the conspiracy begins: a doctrine created by translation, defended by rhetoric, and protected by demoting Scripture that contradicts it.

The second link is Huldrych Zwingli (1484–1531) in Zurich. In 1525–1527, Zwingli broke with fifteen centuries of Christian teaching by declaring that baptism does not remit sins and is not connected to salvation. He argued that baptism is a human work and therefore cannot be part of salvation. This argument had never been made before in Christian history. Zwingli’s writings of 1527–1528 explicitly redefine baptism as a mere symbol. This is the origin point of the modern claim that baptism is a work. No apostle said it. No early Christian said it. No medieval theologian said it. Zwingli alone introduced it, and his followers carried it into the Swiss Reformed tradition.

The third link is John Calvin (1509–1564). Calvin systematized Luther’s and Zwingli’s ideas into a coherent structure in the first edition of the Institutes (1536) and its later expansions. Calvin tied “faith alone” to predestination and reinterpreted obedience as evidence rather than participation. He did not invent the sinner’s prayer, but he created the theological environment in which a non‑sacramental conversion moment could flourish. Calvin’s followers in Geneva, France, Scotland, and the Netherlands carried this system into the seventeenth century, embedding it in the Westminster Confession (1646). This confession became the backbone of Presbyterian and Reformed identity and the seedbed of later evangelicalism.

The fourth link is the English Puritan movement (1600s). Puritans brought Calvinistic theology to the English‑speaking world and to North America. Their emphasis on inward experience over sacramental participation prepared the soil for revivalism. They did not yet teach the sinner’s prayer, but they taught that salvation occurs at the moment of faith, not at baptism. This shift, repeated for generations, created the cultural expectation that salvation must be instantaneous and internal rather than covenantal and enacted.

The fifth link is the rise of Baptists (1609–1700s). Emerging from English Separatism, Baptists rejected infant baptism but retained the Reformation doctrine of faith alone. They declared baptism symbolic and insisted that salvation occurs before baptism. This was a radical departure from the entire pre‑Reformation world. By the eighteenth century, Baptist theology had become the dominant evangelical voice in America. Their confessions and preaching normalized the idea that baptism is a work and therefore cannot be part of salvation. This is the point at which the conspiracy becomes a tradition.

The sixth link is John Wesley (1703–1791) and the Methodist movement. Wesley rejected Calvinistic predestination but retained the core idea that salvation is received at the moment of faith. Methodism spread rapidly through England and America, reinforcing the belief that baptism is not part of salvation. Wesley did not teach the sinner’s prayer, but his emphasis on personal experience paved the way for it.

The seventh link is nineteenth‑century revivalism. Figures such as Charles Finney (1792–1875), D. L. Moody (1837–1899), and Billy Sunday (1862–1935) transformed salvation into a public decision event. Finney introduced the “anxious bench.” Moody introduced the “decision for Christ.” Sunday introduced mass‑appeal emotionalism. None of these men taught baptism for remission of sins. All taught salvation by faith alone. Their methods required a quick, repeatable, non‑sacramental conversion mechanism. The sinner’s prayer was the inevitable result.

The eighth link is Billy Graham (1918–2018) and twentieth‑century evangelicalism. Graham’s crusades standardized the sinner’s prayer as the normative method of conversion. His influence was global. Millions came to believe that repeating a prayer is the biblical plan of salvation. Graham cited Ephesians 2:8–9 as the foundation for rejecting baptism as essential. Yet Paul in Ephesians 2 is not discussing baptism at all; he is discussing the origin of salvation, not the means by which one enters it. The myth that Ephesians 2:8–9 forbids baptism is a twentieth‑century invention, not a biblical argument.

By the late twentieth century, the conspiracy was complete. Luther’s inserted word became a doctrinal slogan. Zwingli’s rejection of baptism became a universal assumption. Calvin’s system became the intellectual framework. Puritan and Baptist preaching became the cultural norm. Revivalism created the conversion moment. Graham industrialized the sinner’s prayer. The result is a doctrine believed by millions, defended by tradition, and assumed to be biblical even though it contradicts every apostolic text on salvation. The myth survives because it is repeated, not because it is written.

It's that time of year again, Bike Night kicked off this week and for the next several months the roads will be filled with motorcycles. And just like every year we will say goodbye to some of our brothers and sisters in the wind. It's a calculated risk that we take, dealing animals , oil slicks and distracted drivers. Only God knows who among us will be back to ride another year. Having a gremlin bell or " I was blessed " sticker on your bike will not save your life when God says your time is up. And those bells and stickers will never get you into Heaven, only the blood of Christ and the seal of the Holy Spirit will get you into Heaven. Without them your final destination is eternal separation from God.
The fact is Jesus loves you so much that he laid down his live for your sins. He offers the the gift of full pardon and eternity in Heaven with him. But you must believe that his blood is sufficient to atone for your sins. You must repent and turn from your sins. You must confess Jesus as Lord and be washed clean by His blood in the watery grave of baptism. And you must remain faithful to him until death. I pray that every one of you has a safe riding season but God says none of us are promised tomorrow. You are my brothers and sisters in the wind here on earth and it is my desire to spend eternity with you in Heaven. If you have not decided to accept the free gift of salvation what are you waiting for? Arrise and be baptized calling on his name and have your sins washed away. We have enjoyed the highways and byways of life together. Let's enjoy the streets of gold together.
If you have any questions about where you will spend eternity call me, I'm here to walk with you as you enter into a new life in Christ.
