Today (November 1) is All Saints Day. Its origins go back to the 300's, when those who were martyred for their faith were remembered. Later it celebrated those who were canonized by the church as saints (there are, I believe, over 10,000 formal "saints" who have been recognized by the eastern and western Church). All Souls Day, November 2, was set apart to recognize all faithful Christians who had died. Protestants tend to celebrate these together on All Saints Day. Today I remember those who have died who shaped my faith. I give thanks for my grandmother, for pastors who took me under their wing, and others at Resurrection who I love and miss. Take a moment to give thanks for the saints in your life.

The collage below I found online - it is the artwork of the children at the Roseberry Academy in England as they learned about All Saints. What I appreciate about it is that, unlike most paintings I could find online, which showed only caucasian saints, this reflected the diversity of the communion of the saints. Well done Roseberry!
