Discussion Questions for Today!

In the biblical world, identity is bound up in the family—gifts always have strings attached, reciprocity is expected, boasting is for the good of the group, gratitude is expressed through honor and loyalty to the family group.

1) How much different would our lives be today if we abided by this rhythm of identity?

2) Do you think collectivism or individualism are good or bad? Do they share some qualities or lack others?

3) In light of the recent mass shootings we've seen in our country, how might individualism contribute to such violence? Were we more collectivist as a society, would things be different?

4) If you had to choose, which type of society would you most like to have grown up in?

5) What changes in Jesus’ teachings when we begin reading them with new eyes?

Some questions for discussion again this week:

So much of what the biblical authors intend is missed because of the collectivist lens through which scripture was written—so much simply goes without being said. With that in mind:

What are some things in our culture that go without being said?

What are some places in the Bible that don’t make sense to us—like something is left out?

Is what’s missing perhaps something the biblical authors simply assumed we’d know?

How can we employ a collectivist lens to our time spent reading scripture?
