Our children are going to face choices we can't make for them.

As they grow, they'll encounter friendships, ideas, entertainment, opportunities, and situations that aren't always clearly labeled as "good" or "bad."

And eventually, we won't be standing beside them to help make every decision.

That's one reason teaching our children to seek wisdom matters.

We want them to learn how to stop and think.

To ask questions.

To consider what Scripture says.

To recognize when something may look appealing but isn't wise.

And to know that they can bring those decisions to God.

This kind of discernment doesn't develop overnight. It grows through conversations, practice, prayer, and the example our children see at home.

So when your child comes to you with a difficult decision, try not to rush to give them the answer every time.

Sometimes, we can walk through the decision with them.

"What do you think?"
"What does Scripture say?"
"What might happen if you choose this?"
"Who could help you think this through?"
"Have you prayed about it?"

We're helping them develop the wisdom they'll need long after they leave our homes.

Our children are learning from us every day.

They watch how we respond when we're frustrated. They listen to how we speak about other people. They notice where we turn when we're worried or when something doesn't go the way we hoped.

They also see the quieter parts of our faith.

They see us pray.

They see us open God's Word.

They see us ask for forgiveness when we've gotten something wrong.

They see us trust God when we don't have all the answers.

We won't always model our faith perfectly. There will be plenty of moments we'd like to do over.

But those moments can become opportunities, too.

Our children get to see that following Jesus isn't about having everything figured out. It's about continually turning our hearts toward Him.

This week, look for one ordinary moment when you can invite your children into your faith.

Pray together.

Share something you're learning from Scripture.

Talk about a decision you're taking to God.

Let them see what it looks like to follow Christ in the middle of everyday life.

There are seasons when we have a lot on our minds and aren't quite sure what to do with it all.

Our children are growing up in a world filled with things competing for their attention.

Some are obviously harmful.

Others are much harder to recognize.

Something can look good, feel exciting, or seem harmless and still require discernment.

That's why learning to pause is such an important skill.

When our children are faced with a decision, we can teach them to slow down and ask:

"What does God's Word say?"

"Is this wise?"

"Where could this choice lead?"

Those questions may not always produce an immediate or easy answer. Learning discernment takes time, practice, and a growing relationship with the Lord.

Our children also learn by watching us.

They see how we make decisions, where we turn for wisdom, and whether our faith actually influences the choices we make.

As parents, we have countless opportunities to practice this with our children in the ordinary moments of life.

A difficult friendship.

A tempting choice.

Something they want to watch.

A purchase they want to make.

A situation at school.

We can slow down, talk it through, open God's Word, and pray together.

Little by little, we're helping our children learn to seek God's wisdom for themselves.

It's easy to look around and wonder if we're falling behind.

Someone else's career seems to be moving faster.

Their children seem to be thriving.

Their family seems to have it all together.

Their faith seems stronger.

Comparison can make us forget that we're walking a different road.

In this blog, Amy Sun reflects on an early morning walk and the reminder that each of us has a race to run. She describes herself as a walker rather than a runner, and yet she realized that there was still something beautiful about staying the course and reaching the destination.

That picture is a helpful one for parenting, too.

Our children are watching us walk through different seasons of life.

They see how we respond when things are difficult.

They see what we do when progress feels slow.

They see whether we continue trusting Christ when we don't understand what comes next.

Our pace may change.

Our circumstances may change.

Our responsibilities may change.

But we can continue following Jesus faithfully through every season.

And as we do, our children get to see what perseverance looks like in real life.

There is no shortage of parenting advice.

Everywhere we turn, we're given another opinion about what our children need, how we should raise them, what we should prioritize, and what we might be getting wrong.

Some of that advice can be helpful. Learning and growing as parents is a good thing.

But it can also become overwhelming.

In the middle of all those voices, Christian parents have a calling that remains steadfast.

We are called to love our children and disciple them.

We have the opportunity to show them what it looks like to follow Jesus through the ordinary moments of family life.

That doesn't mean we will always respond perfectly, or make the right decision every time.

We won't.

It means we can keep returning to Christ and keep inviting our children to walk with us.

So when the parenting advice starts to feel loud, take a moment to come back to what matters most.

Love your children.
Teach them God's Word.
Model your faith.
Point them toward Christ.

The rest can find its proper place.

Have you ever received something so meaningful that you were almost afraid to use it?

Something handmade. Something that took time and love to create. Something you wanted to protect because it was so special.

The author of this featured blog uses an heirloom quilt to paint a beautiful picture of what our faith can look like.

Her mother made her a quilt filled with Bible verses, words of wisdom, and encouragement from people who had helped shape her faith.

And her mom told her, "Make sure you use it. Remember that it's a blanket of love."

That quilt didn't stay tucked away somewhere safe.

It traveled through hospital rooms, grief, family celebrations, difficult seasons, and ordinary days. It wrapped around her babies and became part of her family's story.

There's something beautiful about that picture.

Our faith is precious. We should treasure it. But we were also given a faith to live.

Our children need to see what that looks like in everyday life.

They can see us pray when we're anxious.

They can watch us turn to Scripture when we need wisdom.

They can see us choose forgiveness.

They can hear us talk about God's faithfulness.

And when something difficult happens, they can learn that Jesus belongs in that moment, too.

Those ordinary moments become part of the faith our children carry with them.

Our children learn a great deal from what we say.

They also learn from what they see.

They see how we respond when we're tired.
They hear how we speak when we're frustrated.
They watch what we do when someone disappoints us or when life doesn't go according to plan.

And they see the quieter parts of our faith, too.

They see us pray.

They see us turn to God's Word.

They see us ask for forgiveness when we've handled something poorly.

They see us trust God when we don't know what comes next.

None of us will model this perfectly. We will have hard days, lose our patience, and get things wrong.

That's part of why our children need to see a real faith.

A faith that keeps returning to Christ.

A faith that grows.

A faith that seeks forgiveness and extends it.

A faith that trusts God through both the ordinary and difficult parts of life.

As we disciple our children, let's remember that some of the most meaningful lessons happen right in front of them.
