Celebrate Recovery- of the River Region hosted by Journey Church

Celebrate Recovery- of the River Region hosted by Journey Church CR is a biblical and Christ centered program that helps us overcome our hurts, hang-ups, and habits.

Celebrate Recovery is a biblical and balanced program that helps us overcome our hurts, hang-ups, and habits. It is based on the actual words of Jesus rather than psychological theory. 20 years ago, Saddleback Church launched Celebrate Recovery with 43 people. It was designed as a program to help those struggling with hurts, habits and hang-ups by showing them the loving power of Jesus Christ through a recovery process. Celebrate Recovery has helped more than 17,000 people at Saddleback, attracting over 70% of its members from outside the church. Eighty-five percent of the people who go through the program stay with the church and nearly half serve as church volunteers. A wide variety of hurts, hang ups and harmful behaviors are represented at Celebrate Recovery. Examples include dependency on alcohol or drugs, po*******hy, low self-esteem, need to control, depression, anger, co-dependency, depression, fear of rejection, fear of abandonment, perfectionism, broken relationships, and abuse.

Why do I need a sponsor? It’s about having someone that’s willing to help you grow through working the steps. Come hear more on this topic as Chris gives the Sponsor lesson Monday August 31. There will be groups for all ages available so bring the family too. We’ll serve a light dinner at 6:15pm, followed by the large group at 6:45pm. Then go to the small group, men’s & women’s are available, to share your thoughts & experiences with sponsorship. Don’t forget desserts are in the cafe after small group to allow fellowship together while enjoying a sweet to end our time together. The best is celebrating milestones in recovery with our Chip Celebration, so come share your progress and let us rejoice with you.

❤️‍🩹 LET’S TALK ABOUT CO-DEPENDENCY.

Co-dependency can show up when our need for another person’s approval, acceptance, or validation becomes so important that we start letting them control our choices—or when we find ourselves trying to control or manipulate someone else.

Sometimes it can look like:

⚪️Saying “yes” when you really want to say no.
⚪️Changing yourself to keep someone happy.
⚪️️Feeling responsible for someone else’s emotions or choices.
⚪️Trying to rescue or fix people.
⚪️️Avoiding healthy boundaries because you're afraid someone will leave.
⚪️Compromising your values because you desperately want approval or acceptance.

Over time, we can lose sight of who God created us to be.

At Celebrate Recovery, we learn that our identity and worth don't have to come from another person's approval.

Our identity is found in Jesus Christ. ✝️

Recovery may mean learning how to establish healthy boundaries, surrender our need to control others, stop trying to rescue everyone, and recognize that we cannot make another person's choices for them.

And sometimes one of the hardest lessons is realizing:

✅️You can love someone without controlling them.
✅️You can care about someone without rescuing them.
✅️You can disappoint someone and still make a healthy decision.

📖 “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?” - Galatians 1:10 NIV

If co-dependency, people-pleasing, fear of rejection, or unhealthy relationships are part of your story, you are not alone.

Celebrate Recovery provides a safe, Christ-centered community where we can honestly work through our hurts, hang-ups, and habits while Jesus Christ leads the way.

🙏 Jesus, help us recognize the places where we've looked to people for the validation that ultimately belongs to You. Give us wisdom to establish healthy boundaries, courage to make healthy choices, and grace to love others without trying to control them. Remind us that our identity and worth are found in You. Amen.

EVEN IF NOT…

Sometimes recovery begins with believing God can change everything.

But somewhere along the way, we learn an even deeper kind of faith…

Even if He doesn’t change it the way I prayed… I will still trust Him.

Even if the relationship isn’t restored.
Even if the apology never comes.
Even if the consequences don’t disappear.
Even if the grief still hurts.
Even if the struggle doesn’t end overnight.
Even if my story looks different than I thought it would…

I will still choose God.

That’s surrender.

Recovery isn’t a promise that God will give us the outcome we want. It’s learning that He is still good, still faithful, and still worthy when the outcome isn’t what we wanted.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego believed God was able to rescue them from the fire…

“But even if He does not…” Daniel 3:18

That kind of faith will change your recovery.

🔥 God, I know You can… but EVEN IF NOT, I’m still Yours.

Did you know that defensiveness can be a hang-up?

Sometimes our first reaction is to explain ourselves, justify what we did, shift the blame, or shut down completely.

Recovery requires us to be willing to look at ourselves… even when it’s uncomfortable.

Defensiveness says, “I need to prove I’m right.”
Recovery says, “God, show me what I need to see.”

There is freedom in becoming teachable. There is growth in taking responsibility. And there is healing when we stop protecting our pride and allow God to change our hearts.

You don’t have to have it all figured out to come to Celebrate Recovery. You just have to be willing to take the next step. 🧡

Church hurt is real.

Maybe you were judged when you needed grace.
Rejected when you needed community.
Gossiped about when you needed someone you could trust.
Or hurt by someone you respected and never expected it from.

Sometimes the deepest wounds come from people we thought were safe.

But the failures of people do not change the faithfulness of God.

You don’t have to pretend it didn’t hurt. You don’t have to carry the bitterness, anger, disappointment, or distrust forever.

Celebrate Recovery is a safe place to bring the hurt… even church hurt… and begin healing.

God is still good.
God is still trustworthy.
And your story isn’t over. 🧡

Sometimes life brings situations we cannot control.

Sometimes it’s an unexpected loss. Sometimes it’s news we weren’t prepared for. Sometimes it feels like the wind has been knocked out of us and the rug has been pulled out from underneath our feet.

In those moments, we may not understand why, but we can remember who is with us.

God is with you.
God loves you.
And you don’t have to walk through the difficult moments alone. ❤️

Reach out to your sponsor. Call your accountability partners. Connect with your Forever Family. Attend an extra Celebrate Recovery meeting if you need one. Let others pray with you and be present.

At Celebrate Recovery, when life feels overwhelming, we often return to a prayer that reminds us what we can control, what we need to surrender, and where our strength comes from: the Serenity Prayer.

Today, wherever you are and whatever you may be carrying, let’s pray it together out loud.

🙏 God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

We have the entire Serenity Prayer listed on today's graphic.

If today is a hard day, please don’t isolate. Reach out. Show up. Pray. Let someone walk alongside you.

You are not alone. ❤️‍🩹
