Here's a startling fact for you:

By percentages of the total number of personnel serving compared to the total number of those personnel killed, wounded, or missing, the Chaplain Corps had the second-highest per capita casualty rate in the U.S. Army during World War 2, right after the U.S. Army Air Forces.

For the entirety of all U.S. military branches during the war, the Army Chaplain Corps had the third-highest casualty rate, behind the USAAF (1st) and the U.S. Marine Corps (2nd).

Turns out, a big part of the reason behind this is that the U.S. Army leadership had made the decision at the start of the war that their chaplains were going to be on the front lines with the troops, ministering to them under fire.

This was a calculated decision that came directly from seeing how much the presence of a chaplain raised the morale of the front line troops during the First World War, and that, in spite of its best efforts, the Army brass had been unable to stop chaplains in World War 1 from absconding to the trenches to be with their men, anyway.

In fact, the last U.S. commissioned officer killed in World War 1 was a chaplain, who was killed about an hour before the Armistice when he went forward to see how his men were doing..... against orders.

These guys were dedicated. And they were all volunteers.

This past fall I met a chaplain supervisor at DCA - Reagan airport. He supervised a chaplain corp at the airports around DC. As we pray today for all who are responding, please remember to pray for the airport chaplains as well as chaplains serving all affected by this tragedy.
