Focus on the Family President Jim Daly issued the following statement today about the murder of Charlie Kirk:

Like millions of Americans, we are shocked and saddened by the murder of Charlie Kirk. It is a dark day when we lose such a young man who was a bright light modeling the importance of standing unwaveringly for truth, and doing so respectfully even with those who vehemently disagreed with him.

We join with the many who are praying for Charlie’s widow Erika and their two children as they cope with the aftermath of losing their husband and father in such an unspeakably violent manner.

The investigation into this terrible tragedy is only just beginning. There will be much to reflect on when the shooter is brought to justice and the motive comes into focus. What we do know for certain at this early juncture is that Charlie Kirk was a man who lived by the courage of his Christian convictions. Emulating him in this regard is the best honor we can pay to his memory and his legacy.

When Paul says in 1 Timothy 2:12, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet,” it's important to understand the context and the language Paul used.

This verse isn’t a blanket prohibition against women preaching or sharing God’s Word. Paul is addressing attitude, posture, and order in the church—especially in a time and culture where sudden shifts in leadership roles could cause disruption.

In other words, Paul wasn’t saying that women can't ever teach men. In fact, in other parts of the New Testament, women like Priscilla, Phoebe, and Junia were active in ministry—even in teaching roles. Priscilla helped instruct Apollos, a well-respected male teacher (Acts 18:26), and Paul praises her for her work.

What Paul is emphasizing is that teaching—especially when directed toward men—should come from a place of humility, gentleness, and respect, not control or domination. That applies to anyone teaching, honestly—but especially in a context where gender roles were culturally sensitive.

So a woman preaching the gospel or teaching in church isn’t unbiblical as long as she carries herself with the spirit of Christ: not seeking to control, but to serve. Just as Paul wanted for all believers.
