The Feast of the Assumption/Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary was this past Saturday. It teaches that in much the same way Enoch and Elijah were carried up into heaven, so to was our Lord’s Mother. While only becoming a dogma in the Roman church recently, there is overwhelming consensus amongst the Church Fathers and the 16thC reformers that this was an almost universal teaching. To say that Anglicans do not believe in the Assumption or Dormition is both factually inaccurate and historically false. We are not compelled to believe it, but to say that we do not is simply untrue. Of the 3 Roman Marian dogmas, this is probably the easiest to accept and believe. No, it’s not found in Scripture, but that doesn’t make it wrong.

Perhaps the best evidence is to ask this question-where is Mary’s tomb and show me any of her relics. There has never been a location attributed to her burial, and if any Saints’s relics would have been venerated, it would have been the Mother of our Lord.

Anglican piety has always allowed for this venerable practice and to say otherwise is a lie.
