Our music associate, Helen Hofmeister, just returned from a carillon music conference at Yale, where she was one of a panel of five judges. The ten candidates played recitals anonymously up in the tower (easy to be anonymous with this instrument!), and she judged their performances to determine if they passed the requirements to achieve official carillonneur status in the organization, the GCNA (Guild of Carillonneurs in North America). She got to stay down on the ground, which is where everyone listens to a carillon recital.

📣ANNOUNCEMENT📣

We are so thrilled to welcome Elijah Hite as our new baritone choral intern this fall! He will be joining us through a UMKC Conservatory Graduate Assistantship. Get to know a little about Elijah!

"Hello, my name is Elijah Hite. This fall I am starting my Masters in Vocal Performance at UMKC. I previously studied at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with Professor Amy Guevara and performed in their productions of the Marriage of Figaro, Amahl and the Night Visitors, O Pioneers, and Dialogues of the Carmelites along with their opera scenes program. I have also performed as Marco in Gianni Schicchi and the Father in Hansel and Gretel in summer programs, and attended AIMS in Graz, Austria in the summer of 2024. Some fun facts about me are that my favorite color is yellow, my favorite opera (for now) is Tosca, and I enjoy cooking and reading in my spare time. I can't wait to join the choir."

On Wednesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. (CST), Dr. Elisa Bickers will present a solo organ recital at Methuen Memorial Music Hall outside of Boston. Methuen opened in 1909 and is the home of the first concert pipe organ ever built in the United States. This instrument is a “bucket list” organ for most professional American organists; it is a tremendous honor to be invited to perform there.

As the U.S. reaches its 250th birthday this year, Dr. Bickers created a program to celebrate Juneteenth titled, “Sojourns: In Honor of Juneteenth.” Even though July 4, 1776, marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, freedom for the wider population did not occur until Texas’ slaves were freed on June 19, 1865. Her program will include pieces that evoke the idea of journeying towards a better world, including several moving settings of spirituals.

Come watch the Houston Boychoir perform its summer concert tour program at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, in the Mission Campus Sanctuary! Admission is free. The choir will also sing during 10 a.m. worship at Mission Campus on Sunday, June 14. We hope to see you there!
