United Lutheran Church of Prairie Farm

United Lutheran Church of Prairie Farm United Lutheran Church of Prairie Farm, Wisconsin United Lutheran Church of Prairie Farm, Wisconsin has a rich cultural and spiritual history. C.G.

When the early settlers arrived in the area, often from Scandinavian countries, they worked hard and long to establish a new life. They had been lured to America by the promise of cheap land, a better life, and freedom to worship God. Parting was never easy as many family and friends remained behind. The hills, flowing streams, and natural beauty of the region reminded them of the old country. Lif

e was difficult as the stumps left by the massive white pine trees previously harvested by the Knapp Stout Lumber Company had to be grubbed out to begin farming. The men and older boys worked winters in the logging camps to earn scarce cash to buy tools, implements, and livestock for the farm. The women and children were left on the homestead to keep things going until spring. Life was not only physically trying but there was a strong need felt for Christian fellowship.

The first Lutheran pastors who visited Barron County were probably Rev. A Johnson of Eau Claire and Rev. Helsem of Running Valley. In the fall of 1869, they made a trip through Barron County preaching to what few settlers they could find in settlements and logging camps in Chetek, Sumner, Dobie, Lakeland, and Prairie Farm. Services were held, children baptized and the sick ministered to. Some settlers traveled 10 to 15 miles to attend services.

Feeling a need for regular worship and ministry, in August 1872, the Solum Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church was established with 37 members. In November 1872, the Akers Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Church was formed with a membership of 73. Both congregations met in homes until they could build their houses of worship, with Akers completing theirs in 1887 and Solum in 1894.

In September 1890, a Christian group met in Sheridan Township, Dunn County, at the Washburn Farm Schoolhouse for the purpose of organizing a Norwegian Lutheran congregation. In 1891, they purchased land from John Knapp for a church and cemetery. In 1893, Zion Lutheran Church, a building 26x36 feet, was completed enough to be used for worship.

These three Lutheran congregations, Solum, Akers, and Zion, continued to flourish as more and more settlers moved into the Prairie Farm area. They, along with the community, continued to grow.

Transition from Norwegian to the English language was slow in coming. Older members felt they could not comprehend an English sermon, but little by little it was accomplished.

In 1936, Solum Lutheran Church changed its name to First Lutheran Church. In 1947 First Lutheran and Akers Lutheran consolidated and became United Lutheran Church of Prairie Farm. As the Akers church building was larger, it was chosen to be used by the new congregation. In 1948, the First Lutheran Church building was sold and moved to Ridgeland where it still is used by Ridgeland Lutheran Church. In 1959, the Zion Lutheran Church dissolved and many members joined United Lutheran. On Easter Sunday, March 29, 1964, the church building burned. Spirits of the congregation were only temporarily dampened as by mid April they had voted to build a new church. Services were held in Austin Murra's shed until completion of the new building which was dedicated on October 31, 1965. On that sunny, warm October day, a procession of joyful believers, carrying the worship furnishings marched up River Avenue to the beautiful new church building for its dedication, placing the worship articles in their proper places. Trusting in the Lord and working together in faith, the congregation rejoiced. Since the original construction, there have been additional enhancements including a new heating system, stained and etched glass windows, a new organ, kitchen updates, as well as the addition of central air conditioning and the construction of a new Pastor's office. Based on the same values and conviction shared by the pioneers moving to the area many years ago, United Lutheran Church, with of membership of more than 700, continues to serve the Lord.

CLICK Week 17: Baptism 💧

It’s hard to believe that the first year of CLICK is almost over!

Tonight, we explored Matthew 28:16–20 and spent time talking about baptism as one of many ways God welcomes us into a loving family.

As we talked, our kiddos drew pictures of all sorts of people they think belong in God’s family. If you want to see the parents, grandparents, animals, and even snowmen they created, you’ll have to swing by the church and take a peek!

After that, we got our feet a little wet with a game of “Grace, Grace, Gift,” our own spin on Duck, Duck, Goose. There were lots of laughs, lots of running, and just enough water to make it extra fun. ☀️💦

Of course, we wrapped up the evening with snack and time together.

It was a beautifully fun night filled with learning, laughter, and reminders of God’s love for all people. We can’t wait to see everyone next Wednesday, June 3rd, for the final night of CLICK Year 1! ✝️

CLICK Week 16: Forgiveness ❤️‍🩹

Tonight, we focused on forgiveness and where we hear about it most often: the Lord’s Prayer.

We started the evening by decorating a large coloring page featuring the Lord’s Prayer, and then we learned a new song to help the kiddos begin practicing the words.

Next, we spent time talking about what forgiveness means, why it matters, and how God calls us to forgive others. We had some thoughtful conversations about how our words and actions affect the people around us.

To wrap up the night, we headed outside for an activity. Each child was given a piece of paper and told to crumble it, stomp on it, fold it up, and wrinkle it as much as possible. 🗒️ Then came the challenge: put the paper back exactly how it was before. Of course, no one could do it! We talked about how our words and actions can hurt people in ways we cannot completely undo. Even though we cannot take hurtful moments back, we can apologize, ask for forgiveness, and try to do better next time.

It was a meaningful evening filled with learning, reflection, and fun together! ✝️

CLICK Week 15: Guided by the Spirit 🌬️

This week, our verse was John 14:15–31, and we spent extra time talking about the third (and often forgotten) part of the Trinity: the Holy Spirit. It feels a little fitting that we don’t have pictures this week, because so much of our conversation centered around something we cannot see, but can still feel and experience.

For our craft, we made pinwheels and talked about how the Holy Spirit is often compared to wind: something that moves, guides, comforts, and strengthens us even though it isn’t visible. The kids had fun testing out their pinwheels while we discussed the Holy Spirit as our helper and guide. The kids asked thoughtful questions and made some wonderful connections!

We spent the rest of the evening practicing our songs for this Sunday, and we are excited for everyone to hear them. 🎵

❗️A reminder for parents whose children will be singing in church on Sunday: please have your child(ren) in the CLICK classroom by 8:45 a.m. to allow time for one more practice, getting organized, and lining up before the service begins. ❗️

CLICK Weeks 13 & 14 🐑🎨

Last week, we learned about Jesus as our Good Shepherd (John 10): someone who knows us, leads us, and cares for us. To bring this to life, we played “pin the wool on the sheep”…with a twist! Kiddos were blindfolded and had to rely on listening to someone else’s voice to guide them. It didn’t take long to realize that listening and following isn’t always easy!

We kept the fun going with outdoor games where kids took turns leading like shepherds or listening and following like sheep. Through lots of laughter (and a little confusion 😄), we saw just how important it is to recognize and trust the right voice.

This week, we explored John 14 and the meaning and importance of names—our own names and the names used for God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. We got a little messy with finger paints, dotting out our names and celebrating how each one of us is known and loved personally. We also talked about how Jesus describes himself as “the way, the truth, and the life,” and what those names show us about who he is.

Two weeks full of fun, creativity, and meaningful reminders: we are known, we are loved, and we are never alone.
