A Sermon Never To Be Forgotten

Through the years I have heard many wonderful sermons, most of which I have forgotten. But one sermon I saw has remained in my heart until this day. It happened on a Sunday morning when I was on my way to one of the two small congregations in Munich, Germany, on a cold, rainy day in November. When I got out of bed I looked through the window which was covered with ice ferns. New deep snow had fallen during the night, covering the streets of the city. I tried to decide whether I should go to worship or stay at home and read my Bible. I knew the congregation would miss me, for I was the only song leader they had. On the other hand, I would have to walk a half a block to catch the bus to the building. I finally decided to go, but only because I was to lead the singing. While I was riding the bus I noticed two people trying hard to make their path through the snow. I recognized the people and knew where they were going. They were brother and sister Trollman, a faithful couple who attended every service. Brother Trollman was a man in his 80's who had lost his eyesight. His only guidance was his 75-year old wife, who was lame in one foot. They lived in a little two-room apartment and received a little support from the government. Because they could not afford to ride the bus to the services, which were about three miles away, they walked to the meeting every Lord’s Day. Here I was, sitting in a warm bus, unwilling to go to worship, forced by my duty as a song leader; and there, outside in the cold weather, were two old people driven by their love for the Lord. I was not able to do anything but blush. I was ashamed of myself and the weak faith and love I had proven for my Lord. I felt like an evil-doer in court being judged by his own conscience. This old couple, without their knowledge and without one word, taught me a greater lesson than could ever have been said in words. --Author unknown (An American Soldier) via Bulletin Gold

"Bring to us children who parents are interested, involved, and invested in the children's education, and more times than not, we will return to them an educated child."

More than this referring to secular education, the above statement is more reflective of spiritual education. Yet sadly, of all the education that children will receive in their lives, none is more neglected than their spiritual education. The evidence of such is often reflected by a discouraged and disconnected faith. Understanding the cause of such can often help us recognize the cure for such:

A Lack of Expectation--Recently I visited with some area ministers. When the topic of the age of accountability began to be discussed I asked them what would they was the age of expectation?
While the age of accountability is, by definition, the age at which God holds us accountability for sin (for some, that is 12-15), the age of expectation is the age at we expect our children to be engaged in learning about God and about those things God desires us to know. Just as Deuteronomy 6:4-7 pronounces a responsibility for the parents to teach, is there not an expectation on the part of the children to be receptive to what is being taught (See also Proverbs)?

I Saw Jesus

I saw Jesus last week.
He was wearing blue jeans and an old shirt.
He was up at the church building;
He was alone and working hard
For just a minute he looked a little like one of our members.
But it was Jesus.
I could tell by his smile.

I saw Jesus last Sunday.
He was teaching a Bible class.
He didn't talk real loud or use long words,
But you could tell he believed what he said.
For just a minute, he looked like my Sunday School teacher.
But it was Jesus.
I could tell by his loving voice.

I saw Jesus yesterday.
He was at the hospital visiting a friend who was sick.
They prayed together quietly.
For just a minute he looked like brother Jones.
But it was Jesus.
I could tell by the tears in his eyes.

I saw Jesus this morning.
He was in my kitchen making my breakfast and fixing me a special lunch.
For just a minute he looked like my mom.
But it was Jesus.
I could feel the love from his heart

I see Jesus everywhere,
Taking food to the sick,
Welcoming others to his home,
Being friendly to a newcomer and for just a minute,
I think he's someone I know.
But it's always Jesus.
I can tell by the way he serves.
May someone see Jesus in you today.
